Xbox Japan Boss Comments On Monster Hunter Frontier Online Sales

By Spencer . July 6, 2010 . 8:45am

image Monster Hunter may be the hottest franchise in Japan now. Two weeks ago, the series made its debut on Xbox 360. Capcom ported their PC game, Monster Hunter Frontier to Microsoft’s console.

And its launch surpassed the expectations of Takashi Sensui, Head of Japan’s Xbox Division. Famitsu caught up with Sensui and brought up the game’s favorable reception. “Yes, sales are greater than we anticipated,” Sensui replied.

The number of online players reached a new record high three days after Monster Hunter Frontier Online was released. All of these new Xbox 360 accounts require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which also means Microsoft has a handful of new Xbox Live members in Japan.

You think Microsoft woulda thought of this sooner. Surprised they didn’t actively pursue the Dragon Quest franchise either

    • Code

Yeah really — sometimes I think Microsoft’s biggest problem in Japan is they just don’t actively pursue series Japanese players would like. It really does feel like it’s all runoff, of games that sell well in America when you browse the Japanese Xbox Live.

      • krokounleashed

Well, maybe the prices for these franchises are to high.

They pursued a lot of RPG series and moneyhatted them in the first years of the platform being in the market. Like Tales of vesperia and Star Ocean and more recently Final Fantasy XIII even though that didn’t come out in japan.

I doubt Yujii Hori would look twice at their proposal. They pursued Square-Enix for FFXIII after all and microsoft did Blue Dragon with Toryama and Dragon in the name purposedly to draw some Dragon Quest fans into it… they didn’t bite and the ones that didn’t reportedly returned the console after finishing the game because they didn’t want it.

If Dragon Quest was on the table, as something attainable, I bet they would go after it, but it wasn’t/isn’t.

Hmmm, like, the reply is all gibberish, you probably didn’t notice when you posted it (and if you’re anything like me you’ll get a notification of this reply on your mail) check the above message, the one you posted because it might have confidential information you don’t want public, such as your mail?

  • Well, Monster Hunter IS addictive, but is 200% more addictive if you have friends to play with, is like a pretty cool and hard but sexy mmorpg (now is an official mmorpg so… X_X), i only have 1 friend to play monster hunter with, and we’ve spent days killing stuff, and with the wii i experienced the online gameplay, and it just made me even more addict to monster hunter. This game + people = best multiplayer game i’ve ever touched.

    Darn why xbox only D:

I’m lucky enough to have a good group of guys to jam on Tri with and am close to hitting the 200 hour mark. Throw me an email or PM so we can jam together sometime. I’m HR45 as of last night.

      My ID is 94NTFG

      • Haha sure, but you may want to wait a bit xD, im like HR 4, it hasnt been long since i got it and i wanted to advance more in the solo mode before grinding online xD; also me and my friend were starting the G missions so we are like PSP PSP PSP!!!!, but ill be sure to call you if im free, to have you in the friends list at least :P

        • Justinzero

No prob. If you ever need help grinding up online or are looking for a carry, you know who to buzz.

  • krokounleashed

I want some “real” Monster Hunter on 360, you know like MH Tri. Not some mmo-crap.

  • thebanditking

I don’t see what all the fuss is about, so the 360 had a good week (but still lagged behind the Wii and PS3 and can’t touch the portables) sales will go right back down just like they always do. Wake me up when things actually change.

    • lostinblue

Well they won’t. It’s too late for Microsoft and this gen.

They even gave up moneyhatting RPG’s it seems.

Monster Hunter might be something they actually actively target for next gen though.
