Is Devil Hunter A New Shin Megami Tensei Spinoff?

By Spencer . July 12, 2010 . 7:14pm

imageAtlus Japan has been quiet. Aside from a on-paper-only list of Nintendo 3DS games and Trauma Team we haven’t heard much from the head office.

Perhaps, one of their internal teams is developing Devil Hunter. Atlus trademarked the term in Japan this past June. The listing just showed up in the trademark database today. Devil Hunter kind of sounds like a Megaten spinoff, like Devil Survivor or Soul Hackers (pictured), doesn’t it?

In addition to Devil Hunter, Atlus Japan also trademarked Gungnir and Radiant Historia. We’re still waiting for news on those.

Radiant Historia have nice ring on it

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

It would be interesting if Devil Hunter turned out to be a sequel to Devil Survivor.

  • Zeik56

Devil Hunter sounds potentially interesting. Granted it could really be just about anything (not even necessarily a MegaTen game), but a MegaTen game about actually hunting demons could be pretty cool.

  • ShinGundam

SMT + Monster Hunter = Devil Hunter and possibly staring Dante

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

I really hope it’s nothing like the Monster Hunter series. Now don’t get me wrong I enoyed the MH series, but with so many other games copying MH its getting kind of bland these days.

      • ShinGundam

I want it to be MH clone to hunt Mara and carve it.

I had to think about this for a minute.

I’d pet him and I’d love him long time.

I agree, there are too many Monster Hunter style games these days, but to be perfectly honest, if Atlus made a Monster Hunter style game in the MegaTen universe…I’d totally buy it. No Dante though.Though I’d still prefer something more original.

Omg, Radiant Historia sounds so rpg-ish sexy

  • EvilAkito

You know, it took me a few minutes to realize why I was seeing a Devil Hunter Yohko ad on this page. Now I feel stupid.

  • 9inchsamurai

I’m picturing an action RPG set in the MegaTen universe. AFAIK, they haven’t made anything like a hack-and-slash spinoff yet, so maybe…

    • Zeik56

Well there’s Devil Summoner. Not quite “Hack and Slash” per se, but…

    • SerasVictoria

SMT Imagine was very hack and slashy in my opinion. Kinda fun, but got repetitive too quickly, too much grind for too little payout. (Though I <333333 my Alice on it :D)

I’m also hoping it’s not quite like Monster Hunter, but with just a title it’s so hard to tell *what* it could be.

AFAIK it won’t be a Devil Survivor sequel, though. The 3DS Devil Survivor title is, according to Nintendo, being released under the DS name.

That, or “Devil Survivor” is a placeholder name for the franchise itself. I wouldn’t make any assumptions based on that third-party release list.

      • http://www.carpefulgur.com SpaceDrake

Fair enough! I do find it a little unlikely they’ll drop the Devil Survivor name, though (since they’re building brand recognition… along with the “DS” thing and all :V )

  • malek86

If that’s what it sounds like, I bet it’s for PSP.

  • DDanny

    Hoping it has LNC.

If this IS a Monster Hunter clone, please put it on a bloody console! I *hate* playing games like MH on portable. (Yes, I own all the PSP MHs, but I never managed to get very far due to the lack of true net play, the borked ‘claw’ controls, and the fact that I just can’t marathon play on portables like I can on console.)

o_O The mini-article picture used looked like Saburo ( I think…), The Lupin clone that was featured in Imagine not too long ago.
