Final Fantasy Legends Brings Classic Final Fantasy To Cell Phones [Update]

imageNow we know what that Warrior of Light and Darkness trademark was for, it’s another Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy Legends: Warrior of Light and Darkness is a throwback to classic Final Fantasy, but it’s a new game. Instead of being in 3D, Final Fantasy Legends has 2D dot graphics. Players also have a party with five characters and a job change system to play with.

Classic Final Fantasy enthusiasts with a keitai can download the game in Japan this September. Plans for a North American release have not been announced. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost! Square Enix ported Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, another old style Final Fantasy game originally for cell phones, to Wii and released it on WiiWare.

Update: Famitsu has screenshots and new details. Final Fantasy Legends much like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is an episodic game.

  • If this does get localized, what would they call it? The first 3 SaGa games were called Final Fantasy Legend in the NTSC region.

Speaking of which, $5.89 for FFL2 and $4.50 for FFL3 look mighty tempting…

Naming issues were the first thing I thought of when I read “Final Fantasy Legends”

  • This looks like very nearly the same engine that drove The After Years. I’d bet my hat that we’ll see this in the US at some point, since they have an engine ready for the porting this time around. Assuming they don’t try to put it on the iPhone this time around, perhaps.

  • This looks like it was originally ffv-2

If they do consider bringing to other devices and not just cell phones, I hope they go with a few services (PSN, WiiWare, DSiWare, etc) and not just one.
