How The Last Story Got Its Name

By Spencer . August 17, 2010 . 1:26am

imageIn an Iwata asks interview, Mistwalker founder and The Last Story director Hironobu Sakaguchi discussed why the game is called The Last Story.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said the game’s title appears to have the feeling that Sakaguchi is giving the game all of his strength. Sakaguchi said he gives everything whenever he works on and leaves with the feeling that he could end his career with that game. “But, this time that feeling is especially strong,” Sakaguchi said.

Iwata replied, “You’re pouring so much into this you wouldn’t have any regrets even if this were your last…”

“If I fail I would be asked to retire,” Sakaguchi joked. Iwata laughed back and said later when he heard the name of the title from a Nintendo employee he had the feeling Sakaguchi resolved to make a great game.

i thought the reason behind the title is that the creator of the game is the same with the Final Fantasy franchise.. so Final=Last and Fantasy=Story, i thought it was a reference to the FF games

That’s the exact same thing I thought. Both games have the exact same meaning. 20 years from now we’ll probably see Last Story 13 and the multiple spinoffs, etc.

Assuming Last Story takes off though.

If Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, ASH, etc were any indication (though to me they were all great gmes and I would love to play these sequels) , we probably wouldn’t even see Last Story 2. The market just has no place for JRPG or Sakaguchi’s games these days, as unfortunate as it may be. Even Xenoblade, a great RPG, didn’t sell that much on the Wii. I’m really excited about this game, just like every new game coming from the Gooch. I hope he makes another big HD RPG after this, and resurrect Cry On or something, just a dream..

Well, hopefully Nintendo is going to advertise this more than Xenoblade.

          • Aoshi00

I’m not sure how much they advertised Xenoblade, there were quite a few TV spots right? I mean if the Takahashi/Shimomura/Mitsuda and most of all Xeno brand didn’t help, not sure how much more they could do.I thought Blue Dragon did relatively well since that was the Gooch’s comeback and the first old school RPG in HD, and most Jpn gamers liked the traditional turn-based gameplay and Toriyama art. If this game doesn’t have good sales, I’m afraid the joke will come true, the Gooch would need to retire again, I mean Cry On was scrapped :(.. The pic of that eye-patched guy is just so dang cool… and the girl w/ the wild hair, I think they would be cool chars.

Didn’t Xenoblade do around 80k-ish in it’s first week? I thought that was pretty good. Not the best, but good nonetheless. Of course, I’m not sure what the total sales are, so maybe it died down after that?

But yeah, I’m really hoping Last Story does well. Sakaguichi has so much passion, I wouldn’t want him to retire yet.

    • Aoshi00

I thought the Gooch was sticking it to S-E too, telling them FF was rightfully his or “this is how you make a RPG like FF”, I suppose that’s secondary meaning, but he can’t tell Iwata that can he. I thought even Lost Odyssey had that similar vibe.

Regardless, I’m glad he poured so much into the game, I really cannot wait.

      • Joanna

Exactly. He can’t just say something like that, even if it was part of the reason. I totally agree, especially since Sakaguchi seems to have some class, so even if he feels strongly disgusted with what SE is doing to his child (and he’s called his games his children before), he won’t go publicly bashing the company. He’d do it more subtly, like giving his games similar names. ;)

I seriously also thought it was a reference to FF and look at that art behind the text and font.

Oh god… please, no more news on TLS… the suspense of waiting to see whether it gets localized is KILLING me…

This is really lookin sexier n sexier everytime i see sumthin new about it. To me it kinda gives me a feel of FF n RoF(resonance of fate). I love it. This is the venture SE shud have went but i guess its gotta be shown to them from an X-FF employee in order for them to get it. Much success to the Gooch! LOCALIZE IT!.
