Introducing Catherine, The First HD Game From The Persona Team

By Spencer . August 17, 2010 . 7:47pm

cathrineAtlus Japan announced a new project from the Persona team in this week’s issue of Famitsu. Catherine is an action/adventure game with a horror taste intended for adults.

The game’s premise appears to be about a man who wakes up every night from his dreams. That’s what the text in pink tells us. An info box says Catherine is in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Katsura Hashino, the director of Persona 4, is the producer/director of Catherine. Shigenori Soejima is the character designer and Shoji Meguro is the game’s composer.

  • nonoko

    Oh boy!

  • nyobzoo

I’m all for an action adventure game

  • Jirin

    Me want.

  • Kris

Looks pretty sweet, but how will it play?

    • ShinGundam

It looks like an ADV game.

  • Very excited to see how this turns out!

  • Ereek

You had me at horror. We need more horror games. Less of the action-horror and more of the adventure-horror would be nice.

    • I couldn’t agree more. I can’t even remember the last horror game like that. Nanashi No Game, maybe.

  • cjeromek

Hope this is a sign that Persona 5 might be a 360 release as well. I just started playing P3 and its already one of my favorite games.

    • This is most likely the Persona team’s ramp up to doing a proper HD Persona 5. I am so ready for that.

      • cjeromek

I hope so. Either way I’ll be all over this game when it’s localized. Probably be my 3rd full price purchase of this generated.

    • I won’t lie and say that wouldn’t be disappointing, unless they worked on the PS3 version, did whatever they wanted with it, and then just made the 360 version however many discs it needed to be.

      • TomSkylark

Why would a multi-platform Persona be disappointing?

  • I want this!

  • awesome!! been waiting for some PS3 persona thing xDD

  • Super excited for this. Looking forward to playing the NA version in about 2 years :p

  • Would’ve liked another Persona game, but if it’s by the team, I’m excited regardless.

  • Nabe

Adult in what sense, I wonder. Judging from that scan… it doesn’t look very adult.

    • Yeah, is just a girl with the legs wide open with the face of the dude covering it, Rated for everyone >:P

      • Nabe

Sorry, but if this was intended for adults they’d go for something more than just cheap risque drawings that only teens can get off on.

EDIT: What I meant here is that an adult game doesn’t need to have this to be adult, for those who are reading what I commented the wrong way.

        • Because strip clubs are populated entirely by teens.

          • Nabe

Strip clubs won’t make a self-respecting adult more interested in a game. Hormone-raging teens however…

          • Your interpretation of adult material may disagree with that image, but reality says otherwise. And, being interested in something sexual doesn’t make an adult “less-self respecting”. That was a very childish thing to say.

        • Yeah lol, I know that when people say “adult”content, is not always related to “sexual” content, but just looking at the scan is kinda obvious… if i want a more adult style of a game i would say Hotel Dusk: Room 215 or something like that, then i’d knew someone would be talking about this more “mysterious kind of adult’s game”. And yeah.. i know hotel dusk is more intended of a mystery for Everyone, than for adults, but i see it this way.

          • Zeik56

The game is supposed to be a horror/action-adventure, so clearly it’s not just “sex” that’s making it “adult”. Also the comments I’ve read from Soejima seemed to imply that there trying for some real adult themes, not just sex and violence.

We’ll have to wait and see, but it would be stupid to write it off just from looking at a couple images.

        • Joanna

Yeah, I get what you’re saying, and I agree to an extent. Sometimes sex/violence can be done in a more interesting way. But I agree. I’m tried of people equating sex and violence with adult media and consumption. There are many other interesting themes to explore and it almost seems like some developers add in stuff just for the M rating, which really is childish.

      • Aoshi00

The red ribbon thing is a nice touch :) My artbook is on the way and I’m not even a big Persona fan… I wonder if the main char is like a delusional otaku/mad scientist kind of guy like Steins;Gate…

    • Aoshi00

Maybe they just meant the subject that the game deals w/ being more mature, like affair that sort of stuff? like Anata wo Yurusanai..

I’m glad this is action adventure. I’ve always liked the Persona art, but could never get into P3/4 because I’m not too big in dungeon crawlers. And finally an HD game :)! Cool title too, like Coraline or something..

      • Nabe

I never said I wanted full blown porn. Mature subject matter would be great! But the scans say otherwise.

        • Aoshi00

Adult doesn’t only mean sexually, the subject/violence could be more mature than your rated Teen game. Like Anata wo Yurusanai, you have the main char being a detective and working on cases such as tailing cheating husbands, definitely not for kids.

What in the picture suggest to you this is not adult? It’s going to have horror at least right. I hope it’s not too adult so the Jpn 360 ver would be M and PS3 ver. Cero D and censored :)

          • Nabe

Again, i’m not looking for nudity or sex. I imagine adult to be something like Silent Hill. Deadly Premonition. Or in anime terms, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Gantz. The scan screams to me like some absurd otaku’s version of adult… Higurashi for example.

But this is all judging from that single scan… I never wanted this to be a point of topic but when challenges are made…

          • Aoshi00

I doubt there’d be too much nudity in it, even though nudity and horror are not mutually exclusive. The Persona 3/4 art has always looked more mature anyway. I never thought the killing and cute drawings in Higurashi mixed well together.. I was thinking about affair leading to death or that kind of thing, like how P4 started w/ the female news announcer being dead and it turned out she had an affair w/ the politician.

          • Exkaiser

But Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and Gantz all had quite a bit of overt sexuality to them.

So has Silent Hill, but it was a bit twisted there. Just a little.

          • Gantz is filled with nudity and sex. How about waiting till we have more information about the game before dismissing it?

      • puchinri

I was going down thread and noticed a link to something from P3P, and noticed the guy in the game talked about betraying on his girlfriend…
Were you thinking of that specifically? Or did affair just happen to come to mind? >u<

        • Aoshi00

cool.. so who’s this Vincent guy? I don’t think I would ever play P3P, never even finished P3/4 yet :(… I was thinking about the news announcer in P4 who was the first murder victim and she had an affair w/ a famous politician or something. Affair just comes to my mind when I hear “adult”, like in Anata wo Yurusanai or Nier (the mom of the two brothers hooked up w/ a guy but later was killed by shades…), I think it’s a very emotional element to make the game more mature, usually leaving sad outcome..

          • puchinri

I refuse to play P3/P just because of the ending (but I am at the true ending of P4 at least), but I’ve only seen him in screenshots. And that’s a good point. I wonder if we’re going to get any reference or something like that, especially since he had a cameo in P3P and P4 is loosely connected to P3/P.

I think it is an emotional element. But sometimes, affairs get stale to me. But I think that’s just because they’re so all over the place. In P3P, he did mention betraying a girlfriend however. Though whether he meant betraying a girlfriend, or having an affair on her with Catherine is questionable. I feel however, that it feels like a betrayl of something else rather than an affair.

          • Aoshi00

My Soejima artbook just arrived today, the full page spreads are very nice, the art are mostly from P3/4, Stella Deus, and a handful of illustration he did for other stuffs, no Trauma series though :( (were those even drawn by him?).. I wonder if I would ever get to finish P3 or 4, I’ve pretty much given up on 3, the tower felt too tedious for me and I couldn’t manually control the other members, maybe I would get to play 5 in HD before 4.

I hope this is a standalone game and doesn’t have too much reference to Persona as I wouldn’t get it. I think they did the affair thing the best in Anata wo Yurusanai, the art and story themes were really mature and strictly for adults. I really wouldn’t mind if this is more like a visual novel, I’m a bit lazy to play long RPGs these days :(…

          • puchinri

Ahh, I forgot all about the artbook. I suppose I need to order mine when I get more money in my pocket. Well I hope you get to finish P4 at least (where are you in the game?).

It seems standalone. And frm the trailer, there aren’t any Persona references. I suppose if there are, they’ll be something like easter eggs or cameos at best. The nice thing though, is that it doesn’t sound or look like the usual RPG so far, but who can say how the length or playing through it will go. (I don’t think visual novel would fit this however.)

But I agree. For the most part, I feel too lazy to go through RPGs lately. And the closest I am to going through an RPG is Opoona, and that’s because there’s so much freedom+so little story with plenty to keep me entertained. It doesn’t feel like I need to grind and drag on just to get to the end (I’m really dreading the end actually).

          • Aoshi00

I’m way early in P4.. I beat Yukiko’s nightmare in the Jpn ver and maybe only 2-3 hrs in the US ver, and it’s too bad I only have a US B/C PS3 to play the US ver, to play the Jpn ver I would need to go back to the Jpn PS2 w/ no upscaling.. For me I actually need a really good story to push me to finish an RPG, most recent one was Nier of course, but I also loved the action gameplay. I cannot grind at all anymore, like Wizard of Oz on the DS, way too much grinding :(… I want to finish it because I liked the Sakimoto soundtrack a lot.

          • puchinri

Wow, that is extremely early. If it’s any help, the story certainly is worth it go through, and as long as you keep your party to the right group throughout basically the whole game, you really won’t need to grind much if at all. I made the mistake(?) of playing with fav characters and trying to use everyone rather than sticking to the characters that would take me through most of the game and be the best for the final fights.

I wanted Riz-Zoawd, but in the end, I decided against it. One time I passed up a game with Sakimoto doing music. But Opoona is my fill of his game music works (I cannot wait for the OST).

          • Aoshi00

yep, I practically just started the game and then stopped :(.. hopefully I would go back to finish P4 (alrdy have a huge backlog this gen..) I suggest skipping wizard of oz, even there are so cute moments, for a turn-based RPG, it’s still way too much grinding and repetitive to the point of frustration, it just felt like a chore instead of fun (most of all the trackball running was totally unnecessary), the chars and story are a bare minimum too, so… Muramasa’s soundtrack was one of my favs from Sakimoto, that game was awesome, next is ASH :)

          • puchinri

Ah, I do that often myself. I hope you can go back to it (and same here, though funny enough, my of my games are recently bought but from older gens). I heard some things similar to that. I considered it because when it was first announced, I was excited and followed it closely, but I’ve heard too many things against it.

Ah, the Muramasa soundtrack is really beautiful. I adore the work he put into it. I haven’t heard the ASH soundtrack, I’ll have to give it a listen. I think Opoona’s soundtrack has remained at the top mostly because it was the first soundtrack of his I was most familiar with and enjoyed, but I also love the sheer diversity of the music and the emotion and life of many of the pieces. But I suppose that latter most point applies to most Sakimoto music and is what makes it so grand.

      • Pesmerga00

Seems the guy was in P3P. Vincent I think people said his name was. Talks about his dreams too. A sort of preemptive cameo, kinda cool.

        • How can I miss that during my P3P playthrough? Man.. I talked to him, had the dialogue, but I didn’t get his portrait picture :s

        • Kris

Nice find! That’s kinda clever of Atlus!

          • MisterNiwa

When I first saw the scans, I totally knew it was this guy…

Atleast I know that this guy had a reason in P3P, even though it is not connected to P3 at all.

He was always a mysterium to me, I even had to start a new game because I thought I might have screwed up a new Social Link with him?! 8(

Anyways, this guy looks ultra cool and cheated on his girlfriend, most probaly with Catherine.

    • godmars

Me thinks adult content comes from young lady in the background. The whole “spread and ready” pose. Guy must be coming out of some very interesting dreams…

Or has interesting things coming out of them…

    • puchinri

Something about his face reminds me of Paranoia Agent, and then I can’t help but agree that it would be aimed at adults.

And while I kind of echo the sentiments of some saying the girl could make it adult, I can’t. Just because games (and anything else) aimed at teenagers still has its fill of blatant sex. Even P4 had a strip club and wasn’t even aimed at adults.

We’ll probably see the more adult aspect of it later. But I figure it not having a relatively laid back slice of life portion or something and being more gritty perhaps, might make it somewhat adult? Lets just hope they don’t disappoint.

      • It reminded me of one of the cover art for the anime series Welcome To NHK.
I also agree about the “adult” part, too.

        • puchinri

Ahh, I hadn’t thought of NHK. That’d be a good comparison too.

  • MrRobbyM

If this was porn, I’d fap to it.

  • The look on that dude’s face is priceless.

  • So is this basically going to play like a visual novel then or is this actually going to have more freedom to it with a 3rd person perspective? Sorry, I see a lot of games like this say, “Action/Adventure”, but turn out to have limited playability and most of it is just text + CG scenes.

    • Aoshi00

I actually wouldn’t mind that. Sometimes a long RPG just feels too time consuming for me these days (that’s why I never got to finish P3/4…), a horror visual novel w/ Persona art wouldn’t be so bad for me :)

  • Awesome to the max. The characters looks demented.

  • Is it just me or does this guy look like the one person who was added in P3P? The details kinda match up in a way.

  • It’s been 2 years. Welcome back

  • Holy hell, this… this is Vincent’s game!

Keeping a TIGHT eye on this. It’s (probably) in the Persona universe and if done right it could be amazing. And given Vincent’s appearance in P3P, that means the game’s been in development for over a year at least.

  • SolidusSnake

At long last, a reason to purchase a PS3.

    • Joanna

not really. It’s on the 360 as well. Just warning you, so you don’t waste 400-ish under a mistaken assumption. Unless of course you plan to import, than yes, there is now a reason to purchase a PS3.

      • SolidusSnake

Fair enough. To be honest the PS3 does have a handful of exclusives I’m interested in, like Metal Gear, God of War, Disgaea3, but it looks like quite a few games that are relevant to my interests will be coming to the PS3 pretty soon… Atelier Rorona, Ar Tonelico 3, and now this, so the balance is definitely tilting in favor of the PS3. On the other hand the 360 mainly has a bunch of crap I don’t care about like Halo or games I would be better off playing on my PC.

  • holyPaladin

Yes new game from Persona Team

  • malek86

Yeah, I’ll need to see what this is about.

  • Intriguing? I mean,it’s great to see something vaguely Persona like, but the screenshots are tiny and I can’t really guess what the gameplay will be like.

  • Guest

So this instead of Persona 5? Pretty cool…

  • Honestly I’m disappointed in Atlus. I was hoping for an RPG not a tawdry eroge-lite. The ad for it was especially tasteless.

    • Zeik56

Given all of Atlus’ releases in the past you really think this is just going to be some kind lame sex eroge? I guarantee there’s more behind this game than merely scantily clad women in compromising positions.

      • There may well be and I do hope so but they really havent made any effort to show so in this reveal. From the sleazy and rather disgusting ad to the spread legs and pendulous bosom pics they’ve made every effort to make it look bad. I dont feel any compulsion to give Atlus a free pass, it wouldnt be the first time I’ve seen a games company go in a horribly wrong direction.

  • MisterFoxInc

Whenever I see those crappy photographs of pages of the Famitsu-magazine, I wonder if ANYONE in Japan knows what a GOD DAMN scanner is.

Oh well, still grateful. Thanks for this, it sounds interesting.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Finally! HD! This will be sweet.

I want to delve in this dude’s mind, see how deranged he is. Do it Atlus!

  • So, when this hopefuly arrives in the US I think I finally have to get a horror game. This will be the first horror game I´ve actually been looking forward to :p

    Nice Atlus!!

All that is left is to wonder how am I going to play this when I´m such a scaredy cat?

    • Joanna

Same here. I haven’t tried a horror game yet, but I’m tempted. If I don’t cave in before this gets here (if it even does), it shall be my first horror game as well. :3

  • lostinblue

    bring it on I guess.

  • cmurph666

    Day 1.

  • TomSkylark

And it’s for both the PS3 and 360, so Atlus aren’t screwing over half of the Persona fanbase. They’re so classy!

  • Exkaiser

I don’t think they’re going to play Catherine’s sexuality for faps. In fact, from the scans so far, she strikes me as being rather creepy. My bet is that they’re intentionally making her sexual to unnerve the player.

That doesn’t mean people won’t fap, of course, but some people will fap to anything. Like Mother Harlot.

I think we can trust Atlus to not make a cheap porn game with some action-adventure on the side.

  • Since this game is “tryin” to be more of an ADULT theme, I just hope that we can get the “AO” rating that is rare for games.
