Welcome To Vincent’s Lamb Filled Nightmare

By Spencer . August 19, 2010 . 12:09am

Welcome To Vincent’s Lamb Filled NightmareFamitsu posted screenshots of Catherine, a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game developed by key members of the Persona team. Vincent, an listless salaryman, is the main character and his life turns into a nightmare, literally, when he meets the charming Catherine.

Vincent must climb an endless staircase in his dreams to wake up. Another screenshot shows Vincent turning into a lamb… and in his dream lambs are condemned to die. Other lambs are trapped in this nightmare with Vincent too.

“Atlus’ first entry on HD systems is a completely original title. Before we assault HD systems with a mainline RPG, the team wanted to try creating something new,” Katsura Hashino said to Famitsu. “The results are quite strange…”

Japan will see how strange Catherine is plus animation from ThunderCats company Studio 4°C later this year when Catherine comes out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

This is really reminding me of that part of Odysseus where he gets stuck with Calypso and his men are turned into animals or something.

    • tr1gun1212

I believe they just hung onto the underbellies of the sheep to escape the cave.

      • Kibbitz

That was with Polyphemus (spelling?) the Cyclops, not Calypso the witch.

    • puchinri

Ohh, that’s a very interesting thought (and point)!
      I can see a potential connection in-game.

  • MisterFoxInc

Man, this is getting better and better~!

  • Pesmerga00
    • Jaxx-Leviathan

Can’t help feeling it’s a bit farfetched but I can’t discredit the resemblance in the poses you’ve found here.

      • Ereek

Agreed, that one’s pushing it a bit.

        • Pesmerga00

Just throwing it out there really. The ringlets of hair are similar. Still its all probably just a clever cameo, and the game has little to nothing to do with P3.

  • yegwa

Loving the look of this so far. Been waiting for Atlus to hit the HD consoles with their inhouse stuff.

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

This game is sooo twisted. I like!

  • http://twitter.com/Alos88 Alos88

Persona can wait if Atlus are producing a horror game this strange and intriguing!

  • neogranzon

now I’m wondering, will this ported to US ? With these vurgal screenshot

    • http://www.facebook.com/vileta Dave Vileta

Heavy Rain got localized, and that was published by Sony Computer Entertainment themselves.

This game would have to work hard to beat that. It would need a full-blown sex scene, full frontal nudity, a gratuitous shower scene, some raunchy-ass music, and maybe even a hack that makes a character completely naked.

If Atlus USA gets a chance, I’m sure they’ll jump at the opportunity. It’s multiplatform and sex sells.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

It’ll still probably be too weird for 360 audiences in NA. I have no doubt Atlus will release both versions in the US, but I can’t imagine the 360 version having any sort of sales at all. There’s no bald space marines or gunplay.

        • HPN

Uhhh….. I’m a 360 gamer and if Atlus USA brings this state side its a day 1 buy for me.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexander-Groce/100000039461956 Alexander Groce

I am sure 360 users can appreciate something different like this if it’s done well.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Yes, it appears all three of you are excited about it. I bet Atlus is positively ecstatic at those 360 sales projections.

In all seriousness, I would be very surprised if this even sells to six digits in NA on 360.

        • lostinblue

You’re generalizing a little too much. If Atlus is doing a X360 version they’re doing so for the US and PAL markets, since it doesn’t sell in Japan;. I don’t know how many units it’ll push on either console, and I believe PS3 should sell better considering it’s userbase and past history with the franchise, but X360 is also prone to selling decently.

One has to wonder if it has a shot at selling half what P3 and P4 each sold on the PS2 though, being a new franchise, and a certainly more expensive game to develop (on either PS3 or X360, so multiplatform might be a really good choice, considering they went high end).I’ll buy whatever version is regarded as better framerate/resolution-wise.

  • puchinri

I already feel so bad for Vincent.
But with each bit of news I get more excited for this game.
I can’t wait until the website officially opens.

    • TetsuyaHikari

I actually just randomly checked and apparently the site is up now! Well, it says it will open on the 23rd, but at least we’re not getting that other page anymore, lol. 23rd, here we come!

      • puchinri

Indeed, I saw that too! The 23rd couldn’t come sooner! (Even if it coming means I’ll have started school… But the Catherine updates!)

  • TetsuyaHikari

I’m loving the psychological aspects of this game already. This is what TRUE horror should be like. It should get in your head and make you think all sorts of crazy things, ya know?

Needless to say, you’d have to be missing a few screws to think this game is interesting, considering how completely weird it is. Having said that, you’d have be missing even MORE screws to think up something like this and make a game out of it, lol. I’m loving it though!

This is pretty damn weird, but count me in! I guess everybody is at least one riceball short of a bento anyway in some way or another, heh.

  • DDanny

If anything, I’m happy to know Atlus is developing for both PS3 and 360.
As for the game itself, I really can’t see this as horror… must be the style and atmosphere I guess…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexander-Groce/100000039461956 Alexander Groce

It looks pretty creepy and odd to me. From the look of the cages to the situation. I doubt Atlus will let you down.

  • dusk

Now, I don’t know if it’s just me, but the moment I heard about a game by the Persona team with some sort of supernatural/occult/spiritual theme, my first course of action was to search for any related mythology that might have influences on the game. Below are a few points that I want to highlight.

As soon as I saw Catherine, the first thing that crossed my mind was the Succubus. Quoted from wikipedia, a Succubus “takes the form of a human woman in order to seduce men in their dreams, usually through sexual intercourse.”

Next, the dreams of falling and climbing stairs. My search yield no appropriate results for climbing stair, but for falling, I found something interesting. “According to Freudian theory, dreams of falling indicate that you are contemplating giving into a sexual urge or impulse.”

The last point is dreams of lambs. The only interpretation I found was that the lambs found in the dreams are either “sacrificial” lamb, or “lamb going to the slaughter” (Eg. all the guys who died and Vincent). Also, they are a symbol of sacrifice, innocence, tenderness and purity.

Anyway, it might all be way off base, but at least it’s a start. Thanks for reading.

    • CrisSpiegel

Interesting. Thanks. Also, it may be silly but there’s also sheep counting when one wants to sleep. Never helped me, but might have a connection with dream and sleep.

    • Proooocedin

While interesting, you have to keep one thing in mind regarding Freud: He was a sex-obsessed quack who was all about “contemplating giving into a sexual urge or impulse.”

That said, I remember someone once said whilst in my psych classes that dreaming about a staircase is like moving without a heading. Something akin to not having a goal in life. And falling is equally a failure.

      • Jaxx-Leviathan

While I agree that Freud shouldn’t be the de facto source on dreams with sexual themes, given the speculated point-of-view he may have had on the subject, calling him a “quack” is a bit too strong though, IMO. Another thing: look at the pictures presented here. Picture 2 and 3 have the male/female signs prominently displayed, which I personally think is pretty closely linked with sexual tension between the two sexes. There is also the thing about picture 2 resembling a strip-booth from the audience point-of-view. And picture three, showing the signs of Male/female in the back, has a single female-sign towering over the male signs, which leads me to think that Vincent might feel dominated or largely being “lesser” than one particular or all women. Also, he is basicly naked in his dream. I don’t necessarily link that with a sexual theme, just that insecurity and probably a feeling of incompetence rules his dreams.

    • http://www.twitter.com/christaran Chris Taran

Fantastic work here. I also thought of Succubus when considering Catherine’s deeper meanings.

    • Sakurazaki

Another thing to consider is that sheep usually need guidance; by a shepherd, to be exact.

Considering that the MC’s life can be in a mess and needs a way out.

      • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

That’s pretty insightful. Since it seems like a dream-like word and there were sheep in it I thought it was just like counting sheep. That was the first and strongest symbol I got after seeing the heavy presence of eyes in the trailer.

Ooh I hope the developers watched the movie Inception for inspiration!

  • xavier axol

I like the take on mature protagonist, but let’s face it. It’s not persona 5, and I need more details and picture of Catherine…. cough* nude pictures* cough…to make sore things out.

But in all seriousness, what is the gameplay like?

  • cmurph666

    Day 1.

  • Proooocedin

I definitely prefer weird crap like this, instead of a million and one iterations of Persona 3.

    • lostinblue

me too actually. I’m glad they gave Persona 5 a rest for now.

I was hoping P5 wouldn’t be high end though, but this game seems like a premonition that it will. ingame cutscenes are great and all, facial animation systems too, but I never felt they needed them.

For this game in particular, being something done from the ground (some kind of new spin-off) I certainly hope it needs them/uses them; because there are such kinds of games (and I enjoy them), but for a upcoming persona game I gotta say my perception towards it is very aprehensive.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I know I’m just asking for it by engaging someone for whom I would probably disagree on the color of the sky with, BUT…

Why ever would you NOT want P5 on a HD system? What would they possibly have to gain by putting it on a portable or the Wii?

        • lostinblue

I didn’t say HD, I said High End. Disgaea 3 is low-end on a HD console for instance. There’s a big difference.

They upped their tech quite a lot and that means development costs must have risen quite a lot as well, for instance with this level of graphics and facial animations the kind of animation they did won’t suffice anymore and they’ll need to go out of their way and do Motion Capture. SMT was never “high end” and was fine as it was, hence the remark that I fear them going high end might distract them from what’s important. Happened to lots of franchises you know and SMT isn’t that big, low-end development suited them.

On top of it, I appreciate the short development times we enjoyed on the PS2, I mean from Persona 3 to Persona 4, two huge games we had a 2 year gap, because the tech was there. I’d have no problem if when going to other platform (whatever that platform would be) they kept their base tech de same and just pop out games, I never felt facial animation systems and stuff like that were missing from the games in question. hence the apprehension.

As for platforms, that’s the thing I absolutely won’t discuss with you whilst you keep insisting on every reply you do. My comment wasn’t about platforms though, as you failed to understand, again.

          • malek86

It’s eventually gonna happen. Nintendo is upping the ante with the 3DS, and I bet that the next PSP will also be far more powerful than the PSP today. Sooner or later, they’ll have to start working on higher budgets anyway. Might as well start now. And just because you have a big budget, doesn’t mean you will definitely lose sight of what’s important. If we think like that, we might as well be worried that companies will be too focused on the 3D effect of the 3DS and will be distracted from everything else. Also, I think some people are too worried about this whole development costs thing. The number of studios closing down due to HD development costs is no more than the number of studios closing down who were working on less powerful consoles (especially in Japan). And if HD development really were as expensive as Reggie would want us to believe, everyone would have already abandoned the 360/PS3 by now.

          • lostinblue

I don’t disagree with you, but I see that as the “theory” whereas fact is a lot of them lose sight or end up being embellished versions of shallower products next to their predecessors; like I said I think they looked awesome as they were, and believe since they weren’t high end they had to go for great artistic directions to break away from the mold, in a lot of ways I think the series is what it is today because the tech was modest. Some will argue Persona 3 and Persona 4 are shallow next to Persona 2 already, but I don’t agree with that. I’ll say that I think they were on the sweet spot though, and with every big change/jump they do I’ll wonder the same thing; I feel it’s normal.

I’m not saying I think the game will be bad, in fact I hope it’ll be as good as the most hyped guy in here is rooting for it to be. I just don’t know if Atlus has anything to gain from going high budget.

As for HD development costs, we know the values, it’s usually 3 times the price of developing a game for PS2/Wii. There’s a reason games this gen actually inflated the initial asking prices. We don’t know how much Persona 3 and 4 costed though, but I’ll say this one with the engine and anime cutscenes being handled outside (before they were done in-house, at least the in-between the game… I think?) will surely cost more than 10 million (plus a few millions for multiplatform development with X360). Which is not much, but probably quite a bit more expensive than the PS2 endeavours.

I think 3DS would look great with Persona 3/4 graphics, so if that was the way to keep their PS2 tech running for now I’d be all for it (there’s a persona 3ds already announced, hopefully not Persona 4 with Persona 3 Portable pre-rendered stuff added); that said I gotta say I don’t prefer portables for RPG’s, so while I’d be all for it, I prefer it on whatever home console it pops up.

I’m just not sold on the high end, I like how it looks, I don’t know if SMT and Persona have anything to gain from it, other than bigger development timeframes.

          • Guest

Stay with the pack or get left behind I say

          • lostinblue

I made it clear were I stand, I’ll buy this even if it sucks. I’m just not “sold” on it yet as an improvement (technically it’s sold, but still).

I’ll wait and see; I don’t see how the concerns I voiced aren’t valid, IMO.

I’m already a HUGE fan of ATLUS *singing ATLUS USA*, and I like how this time around its more of a deep theme than the high-school murders n end of the world demons. This does add more depth to Atlus. I wonder if it a Noctune feel or sumthin new?! P.S. Atlus… New SMT: Devil Summoner 3
