The Last Story Focuses On Game’s System Over The Narrative

By Spencer . August 26, 2010 . 7:59am

The Last Story Focuses On Game’s System Over The Narrative In an Iwata Asks interview, The Last Story director Hironobu Sakaguchi said the game’s system took precedence over the story.

“During 23 years there are 3 times when I considered the [gameplay] system first,” Sakaguchi reminisced. The first time was Final Fantasy when he figuring out how to bring a PC role playing game to the Famicom. “There was a considerable amount of trial and error.” Sakaguchi thought about how to use 3D graphics over the story when creating Final Fantasy VII.

The Last Story is the third game, which Sakaguchi says has the feeling of a game with a story in it.

Well, seeing as Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy VII are his two most groundbreaking projects, that certainly bodes well for TLS. Now, the real question is, will I (an American without an imported Wii) ever get a chance to play this game?? THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME.

I asked Godzilla’s mom and she just told me yes you no worries!

    So… It’s a properly designed game?

Out of all the posts on TLS I’ve seen, everywhere, this is the first one with information that interests me enough to put this game on my radar.

Well, that explains FFVII’s mediocre story, then.

or your very minor and jaded opinion of it which doesn’t obviously represent the majority of opinion. Hence moot.

Hraesvelgr’s opinion doesn’t follow the general consensus, and is therefore moot? Funny logic you’re working with there.

I don’t like what you just said to me. Take it back.

What’s with the picture of the two guys taking cover? Are they going to shoot someone with their swords?

  • DudeOnly

If he felt the same about FFVII then this game will be a masterpiece

I was a little worried reading the title of this article, story is one of the best parts of playing thru a long RPG. If he said FF7 was like that, then I certainly have no problem :) Sounds like he indeed went all out.

I have a feeling this was the case with Grandia II as well, so I’m totally cool with it. Just make sure the game doesn’t waste 50 hours delivering an unimportant, uninteresting story. Better to have us replay an awesome gaming experience three times over at 15 each session.

Really really looking forward to this game coming in English…

I agree. I just hope to GOD that the Voice Actors are on point if it Eng only or that they may have a Jap & Eng VA track option.

Focusing on the games system, a Wii game?! Thats rather baffling, what can one possibly do with that. I guess Nintendo is really pushing tons of money into the games development…or offering wonderful incentives.

    • gatotsu911

I think he meant the system of the game itself, not the console the game is running on.
