You Determine Vincent’s Fate In Catherine

Catherine has multiple endings and your actions determine what happens to Vincent, a salaryman who lacks ambition. Players get inside Vincent’s head and live his day to day life.

Part of that is dealing with Katherine. That’s Katherine with a “K”. She’s Vincent’s 32-year-old girlfriend. Five years ago they rekindled at a high school reunion and started dating. Katherine cares about Vincent and knows him very well, down to details like how many sugar cubes he uses for his coffee. While the two are at a coffee shop, Katherine hints that she could be pregnant.

Despite this Vincent hooks up with Catherine and has nightmares afterwards. In one of his dreams he sees a human-like monster in a wedding dress holding a kitchen knife. Vincent appears to recognize the creature, but it’s hostile and will attack him.

Head over to Famitsu to see more pictures of Katherine. Catherine, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, comes out this winter.

The game was pretty much made for a Western audience. No way this won’t come out here. Why do you think Atlus USA was gearing up to publish games on the 360 with all those horrible titles?

“I” determine Vincent’s fate? Well crap, he’s doomed then.

Interesting thing: until now, none of the known character have japanese names. How many people in Japan have foreign name?

    • http://www.twitter.com/christaran Chris Taran

Funny thing about that is, well, it doesn’t take place in Japan.

      • Anonymous

I thought it’d take place at the same city from P3.

      • Anonymous

You sure about that? Yes there is a lot of English but then lots of the locations scream Japan, Vincent’s apartment, a sushi conveyor at 1:00 into the trailer, etc. Replacing written language in animation frames is expensive so I assume they just put in Enligsh (occasionally Engrish) to save on localization costs.

        • http://www.twitter.com/christaran Chris Taran

Using the trailer as my main piece of evidence:

All written language in the game, with the sole exception of in the conveyor belt sushi restaurant, is in English.

The outside architecture looks like that of a major city on the east coast of the US. There are indeed conveyor belt sushi restaurant’s in the US.

The cops at the crime scene are all dressed like American police and the police vehicle is very American in nature.

Again with language, the newscast covering the death, text-wise, is completely in English. I’ve never seen a Japanese news broadcast with zero Japanese language text in it, as well as the presentation of the newscast being very western.

Vincent’s apartment looks very much like the small apartments found in major US cities on the east coast.

Of course this is all conjecture, but based on all the evidence in the trailer I’d say this takes place on the east coast of America in a large city like New York or possibly Chicago. There is nothing in the trailer that screams to me “this takes place in Japan.”

And yes, while even in games that take place in Japan have plenty of English all over, I’ve never seen one where there was absolutely no Japanese (again, with the exception of the Japanese restaurant).

As far as Vincent being in P3P, that was just a little easter egg. Same thing with the Teddie doll being inside the bar as well.

The colors of the police force’s uniform and car should be a good indication that it’s not set in Japan.

mmm katherine is pretty hot why would he cheat on that

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

People want what they don’t have?

      • http://www.siliconera.com Melinda

That would suggest that Vincent would want a world of trouble then – I guess he’s getting what he asked for. :P

  • Anonymous

Considering this is Atlus I do hope the cheating aka Catherine route doesn’t end with some kind of bad ending.
Then again, since this is Atlus I doubt there’ll be a true happy ending, someone is bound to get screwed in all of them.
…And I also hope Katherine isn’t really pregnant, how am I supposed to cope with a baby when I’m just some poor salaryman who lacks ambition?

    • Anonymous

The same way everybody else does I guess: Marry the girl and live an unfulfilled life dreaming of what could have been.

Also I have a feeling most endings will probably have Vincent die of either some supernatural cause or through his girlfriend’s eventual jealous rampage.

    • Anonymous

We need a School Days-esque ending.

      It’s guro time

  • Anonymous

If it doesn’t come out over here I’m totally importing it. You know somebody’s going to make a translation walkthrough.

    • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

Fret not… Since its out for Xbox too I think it is very assuring to say that it will be in English too..

      • Anonymous

yeah right…just like SRW XO for Xbox or the many other Japanese visual novels…

        • Anonymous

Isn’t SRW a bamco/namdai game though? Doesn’t that already speak for itself…? (My bad, it was part of them and now is absorbed into them. Point still stands though?)

The visnovs though, you probably have a point. But at least this is Atlus~?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Yeah, with 360 sales in Japan, if they weren’t bringing it to NA, there’d be no point in even making a 360 version. It’s pretty safe that it’s coming here. Either way, I’d be picking up the PS3 one.

The one that’s voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi. Do you want to incur the wrath of the Guardian of the Moon?

Love the storyline so far. Very fresh and I like it. This is how I want to see more games in the future. Hoping to know more of the gameplay soon.

Hence the combination in the logo of the game of Catherine and Vincent’s girlfriend, now known as Katherine. Clever.

if this releases in america lets hope it opens the door for more adult aimed games. I mean, this isn’t even porn and it already seems to have more nudity than america would bare if you ask me.
