imageSega is kicking off their Dreamcast digital download service today with Sonic Adventure on Xbox Live Arcade. PlayStation 3 owners in the West can pick it up next week while Japan has to wait until September 29 for Sonic Adventure.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 port has an enhanced framerate, it renders twice the amount of frames compared to the original Dreamcast release. Like to collect digital trinkets? Sonic Adventure has plenty. Achievements and avatar items on Xbox 360. Trophies and PlayStation Home Rewards on PlayStation 3.

Sonic Adventure costs either 800 Microsoft Points ($10) or 1,000 yen ($12) on PSN. A DLC pack that makes Metal Sonic playable and includes missions from the Gamecube title Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut is sold separately for 400 MSP ($5) or 500 yen ($6).

  • They couldnt have just included the DX in the initial release? odd

    • They could have, but I guess they’ll make more money this way. Its the only reason for this choice as I can see it. Could be wrong…

I think I’ll pass. Sell me Big the Cat’s debut three times, shame on me.

  • Is this the Japanese release dates for the games or the US/EU ones? I would like to get my hands on Sonic Adventure for PS3.

    • For PSN in Europe and USA…sept 21/22 according to SEGAs twitter.

      • Thanks! Looking forward to take a nostalgic trip! =)

    • The Japanese release dates are different. The Japanese Dreamcast site says Sonic Adventure is scheduled for September 29.

A press release Sega sent us pegs the PSN release for Sept. 21 in North America.

I wonder if they will eventually put SA2 in there too.

    • hope so i played through sonic adventure so many times i’m bored of it but my sonic adventure 2 broke long ago

If they make Adventure 2 Battle I’d love them forever.

You can play as Metal Sonic on the DX version? Seriously, it’s stupid of them to make DLC for this. Sega is already known for overcharging for their DLC, why would people buy this?

  • It’s funny. I loved this game when it first came out. I think it sucks now. That’s the problem with 3D games. What’s revolutionary at one point quickly becomes trash. With 2D games, on the other hand, the mechanics never change so they’re timeless.

    • Eh..I don’t really agree with that, honestly. 3D games can be, “timeless” classics just as well as 2D games can. Good mechanics for a game aren’t just restricted to 2D or 3D. It’s a universal thing.

As for Sonic Adventure itself..I’d say it still blows most of the new Sonic games released, post-SA, out of the water. Then again, I think Sonic CD is better than Sonic Adventure, heh (no, not just because it’s 2D :P). I’ll be picking this up for sure.

I’m as big a Sonic fan as you can get, but I really couldn’t get over how “floaty” the presentation feels during cutscenes, not to mention Sonic is much better off as 2D speedfests that rely on your memory of the level after repeated playthroughs to do any well at (you know it’s true).

I’ll probably get it, but when the DLC comes as a bundle, just because I almost always wait for sales/bundle sales.

    • “Sonic is much better off as 2D speedfests that rely on your memory of the level after repeated playthroughs to do any well at (you know it’s true).”

Sonic Unleashed day stages, a.k.a. Sonic Colors. I cannot wait hard enough.

  • If they followed the same pattern for Skies of Arcadia: re-release the original Dreamcast game and add all the extra Gamecube content as DLC. I’d be a very happy customer :D

As another commenter said, I find it an odd choice they didn’t simply put Sonic Adventure DX as the initial download instead. Why force customers to pay DLC when there’s already another version of the game that has everything? Also, is it just me or do the graphics look a little better? I can’t tell if they’re using DX version graphics or they improved it for the PS3.

EDIT: And 360. Good idea on Sega’s part making it multiplat.
