Ico And Shadow Of The Colossus Collection Coming To PS3 In HD And 3D

Remastered versions of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are coming to PlayStation 3 on a single Blu-ray disc. Well, for North America. These are sold as individual games in Japan.

In addition to upscaling the graphics, Sony made Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection 3D TV compatible. That sounds like an awesome feature for Shadow of the Colossus. You know what’s even better? Shadow of the Colossus runs at a smooth 30 frames per second in HD and 3D.

Sony Computer Entertainment America didn’t share a release date, but said Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection is coming soon.

3D? Oh well, who cares, as long as you can play in 2D I don’t have any problem. But I’m still torn on whether I should buy it or not. After all, I did finish SOTC on PS2 twice… and since I knew how to defeat all the bosses, it was already kinda boring the second time.

But enough time has passed, maybe I could give it a go again.

Shadow of the Colossus doesn’t drop framerate. Definite purchase for me.I’m also not really that interested in the 3d thing, but I’ve been looking into getting a new HDTV. Getting a good brand LED I might as well spend a couple hundred more for 3d, especially when most models come with two pairs of glasses. You’re technically paying for the glasses and getting a better tv. Either that or purchase a Plasma and leave it on a good 200 hours with a break in disc.

That’s really not necessary anymore, nowadays. I have got a new Samsung 50″ plasma for cheap this summer, and started using it right away – granted, I did set the brightness and contrast down for the first 100 or so hours, but now I’m playing just fine. The problem is, even then you will still see burn-in whenever you play a game with HUD or something like that for a long time. Even if it’s not dangerous, and even though it will go away in a quarter hour, it’s still a bit annoying.

Overall, even though plasma does give a better picture, I’d get a LCD for gaming. I got a plasma because I wanted to use it for Blu-rays too, so picture quality was a factor (that kinda makes me wonder why I went for a cheap Samsung then… but whatever, I like it, even if the black is not as black as my previous old plasma).

This is going to be amazing, I’m really happy they are being released together. I was worried at first when I heard Japan was getting them separately.

  • nyoron

I haven’t played either of these yet (yeah yeah shame on me) so I’m really looking forward to this. Hope to be able to try out the 3D too.

  • Choppasmith

This is good for me. I’ve always wanted to try out these games, but never got around to getting either of them. And now assuming they’ll be released in the US, solid and glitch free, I’ll definitely pick this up.

Since I haven’t played these games before, I need to get this collection.

    I need an HDTV now.

Why do the images look so excellent? Was the game in already some excellent condition on the PS2?

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Yes, but it had some frame drops (shadow of colossus), but not much, and there were no leading screens so is understandeable, ICO was perfect, but not as big as shadow of collossus (but ICO was hard lol xD, it wasnt easy to protect the girl every second)

SotC was one of the better looking games on PS2. The Colossi had a huge amount of detail on them. But because of that, the game had some disgusting frame rate drops. This being fixed is enough to make me buy the same a second time.Ico didn’t look quite as good, graphically, but certainly not bad. It’s also a completely different game. It stands on the fine line between “annoying” and “excellent.”

i have both games… and HELL i still gonna buy this! these games are a master piece X-x

Dayum, those two games are ones that would really look amazing in 3D. The lush environments, the detailed animals….I can’t wait

  • hadjimurad

ignorant question: i looked up ‘upscaling’ but in non-technical terms, what does it do to the picture? smooths or actually more detail?

    • mirumu

Most upscalers only smooth and actually blur detail. The best ones hold all the detail, but smooth where appropriate such as around jagged edges. It’s not possible to add real detail, but there are some that do add in fake detail. None of these will look as good as real HD of course, and a poor upscaler will actually look worse than a decent SD setup.

Honestly though I doubt these games are upscaled 480p. I’d have assumed they’d just configure their engine to render directly to 1080p (or 720p if they must). The PS3 would have enough power given the polygon counts won’t be as high as a typical PS3 game. I doubt they’ve gone to the trouble of adding any more polygons into the 3D meshes as that’d be a lot of work, but it should have been fairly quick and easy to increase the texture resolution and that would provide more real detail. The screenshots we’ve seen so far aren’t really good enough to tell, but looking closely at the ICO ones makes me think this is exactly what they’ve done. Pure speculation on my part though.

I just hope the leaves on trees in SotC don’t look as blocky as they originally did. Surely all the interlacing flicker is long gone too.

    • thebanditking

definitely not an upscale, these are likely just like the God of war and Sly collection, redone graphics using higher quality textures. Theres a big difference between upscaling a 480P game and actual 720/1080P. The shots alone show way too much improvement for that (notice how there is no stretching at the sides and the characters don’t look dwarfed).

I hope “coming soon” means next week!
    Just imagine.
