Valkyria Chronicles 3 Trailer Contains No Gameplay, But Lots of Drama [Update #3]

By Kris . September 16, 2010 . 11:03am

At their press conference at the Tokyo Game Show yesterday, Sega gave attendees their first look at Valkyria Chronicles 3 in video form with a debut trailer.

Judging from the trailer, Valkyria 3’s story seems to be taking on a much grimmer, more serious tone than its predecessor. Although Valkyria Chronicles 2 is a fantastic game, a lot of the series’ fans were turned off by its change to a school setting with a relatively lighthearted air.

It appears as though Valkyria Chronicles 3 is looking to rectify that by taking an alternate, much more fatally-aware look at the Europan War of 1935. The main squad in the game, Squad 422 — or “the Nameless” — seems to contain both a Valkyria named Riela Marcellis and a Darcsen named Imca as main characters. If the trailer is any indication, it doesn’t seem like they’re going to get along too well…

Valkyria Chronicles 3 will be out in Japan on January 27th, 2011. That’s the upside of a faster development cycle typically associated with portable platforms.

Update: 4Gamer have off-screen ingame footage of the game, along with a couple screenshots. We’ve also managed to restore the original trailer, thanks to a tip-off from Chris Taran!

Like Vegeta would say, “what’s this, a Valkyries bargain sale?”

    • FlamingSausage

Lol yeah, soon they will be adding new power levels for Valkyries.

    • Chow

Next thing you know, they’ll start glowing with fiery energy and shooting beams at each other.

      • FlamingSausage

But isn’t that what they already do? :x

    • i take 2 please!

  • I can’t see the trailer, the user delete the video

  • what it was removed!

  • Sega (or someone associated with Sega) have pulled the original video, but there’s an alternate, shorter version up now. Thanks for pointing it out, guys.

    • Chow

This “shorter version” seems quite robust at 3:07. How long was the original video?

  • Chow

In the off-screen footage, was that co-op play, or AI?

  • Can’t believe that absurd lack of respect Sega has for this franchise. Another Valkyria? Seriously?

    • raymk

Uh if you knew the story you do know that Valkyria’s were a myth and not every knew how many existed. Also the game is named Valkyria chronicles how the hell can you not have a Valkyria.

      • Hraesvelgr

Final Fantasy has never been final, despite the title. There doesn’t have to be a Valkyria in every game. In fact, if they make this a longer running series, the Valkyria will become really uninteresting, since there’s little variety in what they can do.

        • Kibbitz

Going with your example, I’d say it’s Square being the failure by not having their Final Fantasy being final. Sega, at least, keeps their title more sensible.

Anyway, as to whether the Valkyria become dull and boring from overuse, guess we’ll see how it turns out for this round at least once VC3 rolls out.

  • I like it, I like it.

    • d19xx

Agree. I hope Avan gets mentioned getting killed prior to the events in this game…..

      • The event of this game are before Valkyrie Chronicles 2. VC3 took place at the same time with VC1.

…I think this move is always weird because most of this character don’t appear in the previous version then this event make you think that the relevance of this new history is very little.

        • d19xx

I see. I still want Avan dead though.

  • Original extended trailer added back in!

  • Edit: Nevermind, Ishaan put the full trailer back up.

  • Cloud_ST

    Interesting,I can’t wait to play a demo for it,sometime next year,probably.

  • As much as I complained about them making a new Valkyria Chronciles game so soon, and on the PSP, I must say the story, and even game play, look like a step up from VC2. It seems to me they’re focusing on fewer characters in this game, and did I just see the player moving two characters at once? Also more playable valkyrur action is a plus… Okay I’m a bit excited now… but I don’t take back my initial complaints!

  • Aoshi00

Really like the art. There’s a shorter 1min+ HD trailer on Jpn PSN, w/ Jpn subtitle too.

  • Hraesvelgr

So are we stuck with tiny maps, again? If the map size is increased and the story isn’t as poorly paced as VC2’s, there shouldn’t be any problems.

  • animaster

Since I don’t own a PS3, I’m pretty excited to see VC3 is coming to PSP.
But I feel bad for those PS3 owner … I wish Sega could make VC3 beam the screen up in HD from PSP to PS3 as they did with Project Diva and Dreamy Theater, so we can all enjoy VC3 together.

    • Kibbitz

It’s not all about the HD though. The PSP is a weaker machine after all, so depending on the game engine involved, there are may be other issues besides just HD graphics. I’ve only played a bit of VC2 and none of VC1, so I have no point of comparison, but I’m guessing the multi-area system in 2 is (at least in some part) due to PSP hardware limitations.

  • Jirin

VC is grownup again? Whew. Valkyria Chronicles 2 might as well be Tales of Tanks.

  • Kamion

The new Orders/Commands look awesome… can’t wait to play a demo of this :)
