Is This A Lost MegaTen Game From Atlus?

By Spencer . September 28, 2010 . 1:08am

bfZ89Over on the Lost Levels, a forum member dug out an old issue of PSM from Tokyo Game Show circa ten ears ago where Atlus demoed a networked PlayStation 2 game. The game shown in the scan doesn’t even have a name, but it’s reportedly a fantasy action/adventure title.

7HeroesForceBattle points out the monster looks strikingly like Cerberus from the Shin Megami Tensei series. I have to agree, if you include the red thing on its back, which could represent the player.

Since this scan was from Tokyo Game Show 2000 it’s two years before Shin Megami Tensei Nine and three years before to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

wow 10 years ago..a certain RIP to this game anyway. But maybe someday they’ll see this scan and resume working on it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that screenshot was actually SMT: Nine early in development, before moving to the xbox, considering Nine was suppose to be a multiplayer online/mmo style game.

I do actually own a copy of SMT: Nine, but too bad it’s not one of the backwards compatible games for the 360 so I have yet to actually play it.

    • This actually sounds most likely. SMT:NINE was a mess (you’re not missing much) but it started off as a neat idea. Of course, Imagine came along a bit later to accomplish what Atlus originally set out to do…

Unsurprisingly, there’s very little info on NINE online; the only thing I can find of it is part of this (fantastic) article:

Ah PSM, that takes me back. They were great, but started to go slowly downhill after they decided to get rid of Banzai Chibi-chan and import coverage. I used to get so excited looking for gaming mags in the mail back then, sure doesn’t feel like 10 years ago.

  • I’m *pretty sure* this is/was some kind of tech demo; it got some brief screen time in the [Japanese] “Making of Nocturne” Special DVD [which I happen to own]. Unfortunately I don’t know enough Japanese to know what’s going on, but I’m reuploading an expert of the DVD onto veoh, now it’s in better quality! [it’ll take a few hours to finish, my username there is “NagaFanatic” if anyone wants to camp out on my video page XD] Skip to about 10:16 to see the tech demo part.
OR just hop to my PB and see a few screenshots I took:
The way it plays is similar to the Devil Summoner Raidou 1 demon-only battles, I think.
Hopefully this will dispell any rumours already brewing :p
