Sega is ready to release Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. The downloadable game arrives on the iPhone OS first with a release slated for October 7. Wii gets the game next on October 11. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 rolls on to PlayStation Network on October 12 and when Microsoft updates Xbox Live a day later, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 will be available for Xbox 360.

Here’s how the game looks on each platform.

Pricing for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is quite scattered in Japan. The game costs 900 yen ($10) on iTunes, 1,000 Wii Points ($10 or $12, if you factor currency exchange), 1,300 yen ($15) on PlayStation Network, or 1,200 Microsoft Points ($15). Microsoft Points are more expensive in Japan than North America so the 1,200 points cost roughly 1,800 yen, which equates to a Jackson and a Washington ($21).

In North America, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 costs 1500 Wii Points ($15), 1,200 Microsoft Points ($15) or $14.99 on PlayStation Network.

How many worlds is this Episode going to be? For 15 dollars I’d pretty much expect a full game, not 3 or so worlds.

    • If I remember it is 4 of them, all available right from the start. Though the premium price is certainly worth it because all these games are excellent!

    • I’m pretty sure it’s 4 worlds of 3 acts each. Even though it’s called Episode 1, it’s still a full game

      • speedstersonic

Uh, pretty sure more like 8 worlds was a “full” sonic game. But at 15 it feels about right for 4 worlds, but I wouldn’t call it a “full” game.

    • its 6-7 if all of my homework is correct 3 acts each

  • SEGA it is higher priced than I expected…but…DUDES, Sonic looks as epic ever!!!! LIEK ZOH-MY-GAWD, I cant wait to play it! Ive been waiting ever since it was announced. Im so buying it on day 1! Its gonna be awesome!

    • i played the xbox360 games months ago, and looks like the same game
and i can tell you something
      it SUCKS

      • You do realize it was delayed from July to now to fix all of the problems people like you had with the copy of the game you probably pirated, right?

This is one case where I’m okay with pirates complaining about a game. Normally it’s just stupid and equates to “Baw Company X did not make this game that I stole from them to my exact liking I am dissatisfied with this product I got for free I’m never going to be a loyal customer and pirate their games again Company X is finished”

      • So you’re a pirate, then?

        • Aoshi00

We do have some pirates here. Usually they say they would never pay such and such for a game, yet they have miraculously played all the imports on day 1 alrdy :)

Sega hasn’t released a playable build to the public that’s up to snuff with the full thing. You don’t know how it will play.

      • thebanditking

“I intend to see that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves: a short drop and a sudden stop.” love that line, that aside if you steal games you suck.

  • Every preview I’ve read of this says that Sonic’s physics don’t feel right compared to 1-3. If Sega was smart they’d delay the release and fix that. But if Sega was smart they wouldn’t be Sega.

    • It’s not something that needs to be fixed because it’s not a problem. The physics of New Super Mario Bros Wii were a lot different from those of the originals, but after a single level, you were used to it and didn’t even notice/care

I wonder if that means the “newer” spin mechanics from the Advance/Rush games are gonna be in this. I liked the “older” spin mechanics from the Genesis games because it allowed Sonic to actually speed up while going downhill and continue rolling for a long way. The newer mechanic had him grinding to a halt relatively fast, and that was quite distracting.

They’ve made some questionable (arguably stupid) moves this gen, especially when it comes to established franchises and advertising their stuff, but it’s a bit unfair to discredit them completely.

When people bash Sega they seem to forget Sega also published some of the most diverse, unique, or wonderfully strange games this generation (Valkyria Chronicles, Resonance of Fate, Bayonetta, Vanquish, the Yakuza series, Rub Rabbits, Infinite Space, Madworld, and House of the Dead: Overkill).

Sorry for laundry listing but that’s list is just something that can’t be ignored.

      • Fair enough. I just get frustrated with how they handle Sonic in particular, because it’s been a pretty long time since I enjoyed any of those.

        • You didnt enjoy Sonic Unleashed?! It was both fast paced, fun, and gorgeous. The controls were on point too.

  • We’re getting two very promising Sonc games this year (Colors DS/Wii), both are must-buy titles for me.

I’m a sucker for Sonic, but not so much for digital downloads, especially episodic games. So I’m not sure what to do right now.

They need to fix the run animation, though. I actually like the trailing arms thing he does at full speed nowadays.

  • Why the heck is the game cheaper on the wii in Japan but not here? I want the PS3 version, but 15 dollars for a downloadable game is too much for me.

    • Aoshi00

Just wait till they’re on sale, most XBLA or PSN games go on sale and drop to half priced fairly soon. I almost always never paid full price for downloadable titles, I have enough games I haven’t played as it is. I got Castle Crashers, Trials HD, etc for half or less. Though I bought Shadow Complex on day 1. I’m anxiously waiting for a price drop on Limbo, 3hrs is just too short even though it’s so artistic an eerie. I think Sonic could be worth $15 if this turns out to be good. I bought Sonic 1-3, Knuckles for like 240 MS pt each though when they were on sale, really worth it, sometimes not being on a disc is actually more accessible.

      • Yeah, I have a personal rule that I won’t pay anything above 10 dollars for a downloadable game, kinda silly but I stick to it, and as such I’ve been waiting for a price drop on a few games now…Rocket Knight(PS3), Castle Crashers(PS3), and now this game… It’s a shame that 15 dollars seems to be the default price for downloadable games now… I miss the days of the 10 dollar standard.

        • Aoshi00

Scott Pilgrim was so worth $10 though, I would’ve paid $15 for that. But $10 was a bargain for such an awesome beat ’em up. But most of the time I wait for price to be slashed in half, that’s what makes them really worth it. I got Ikaruga for 400 pt because I alrdy played it on GC, and the 360 port was superior in every way. It’s not really a matter of downloadable though, sometimes I just try the demo and feel I’m not in a rush to play it, and they price drop so fast.

        • Aoshi00

what a coincidence, Limbo is now on sale for 800pts, that’s only 33% off, but still a good deal, it’s like 8 bucks for me since I got my 1600 pt card for like $16 (i’m so cheap lol..), time to git :) There’s an offer too, spend 2400 pts in Oct on arcade live or add ons and get 800 pts for free! well I’m getting Limbo, let’s see what else I could buy, maybe wait for Sonic. I guess Toy Soldiers could be the other one, also on sale for 800 pt

Oh sry, I read it wrong :(, Limbo is still 1200 pt, no price drop, the promo is if you get 2400 pt you get 800 pt free lol.. my bad. So I guess I should get two games and get 800 pt back.. Limbo and something else.. castlevania maybe.. don’t like the time limit though.. got it, Dead Rising Case 0, Toy soldier, and Limbo! 400+800+1200, actually scratch that, Limbo + Sonic in mid Oct lol… when the heck is Guwange coming out alrdy…

  • Day2Day

I want to play it, but at the same time, the “He’s no longer the Sonic you grew up with…” Alarm bells are going off quite a bit, so I’m hesitant to pick it up…

  • Definitely worth the 14.99. :D
