Foto Showdown Developer Creating 3DS "SRPG"

imageTokyo based Alphaunit jumped right into the Nintendo DSi with the first Japanese developed and published DSi exclusive. It’s called Monster Finder in the Land of the Rising Sun, better known as Foto Showdown in the West. That’s the name Konami gave the camera capturing monster catching game when they brought Monster Finder overseas.

So, it’s not too much of a surprise to see Alphaunit jump on the Nintendo 3DS bandwagon. Details about their first 3DS game have not been announced, but Famitsu says its a "SRPG" (temporary title). SRPG could mean "strategy RPG" or "simulation RPG."

Either way, we’re talking about a game with tactical battles and probably some kind of grid system in 3D.

Aside from Monster Finder, Alphaunit developed the quirky music game Rhythm de Run Run and Batting Revolution also known as The Cages. Hmm… so far Konami brought two of Alphaunit’s lineup to North America. Perhaps, we’ll see this enigmatic game too.

  • SRPG…hm well now Im waiting for more information. I hope it embraces the use of charming characters and a light hearted story. It will be interesting to see SRPGs in 3D visuals. I wonder if it will appear like the characters on the field would be “popping” out towards us. I love 3D, lol, it makes everything seem interactive.

That game reminds me of Music(al?) Gun Gun. I know it got released in arcade (and a second is already in development/announced!?), but did it ever get a console release or talk of localization?

And I haven’t picked up Monster Finder, but I do want to (guess I’d need a DSi first). I look forward to this title though too.

    • No, it hasn’t gotten a console release. (“Localization”? Haha, great joke.) I’d love it if a Move version happened, but I’m pretty pessimistic…

Ah, I guess that’s what I get for holding out hope. (Hey, even comedians can dream. I really wanted to do the stage with ZUN’s song…)
I was thinking of the Wii, but even a Move version would be nice.

I was just thinking if they are indeed working on a second already, that’s good for the success, but I wonder if it lowers or brings up the chance of a console release.

Always nice to see more SRPG goodness. While I am sure some people would complain that there is plenty of such titles as it is, I would say that it’s counterbalanced by the fact that there are hardly any turn-based strategy/tactics games in the West (although Ghost Recon for the 3DS will be a turn-based tactics game).

Anyway, it’s great that the 3DS is getting some SRPGs. Infact, I think this and SRW 3D are currently the only SRPG titles in development.
