Finally, A Clear Look At Catherine’s Action Mode

By Spencer . October 22, 2010 . 1:26pm

Most screenshots of Catherine are like this, pictures of Vincent with one of his two loves.

Finally, A Clear Look At Catherines Action Mode

After announcing the release date, Amazon Japan posted a screenshot of Catherine’s action part. It appears Vincent is vertically scaling a tower to escape a heart shaped monster with a massive tongue. The bottom right has a map/progress bar and it looks like there a coins to collect while climbing.

Here are more of the usual Catherine screenshots, some of which have been released before.

rar, looks so good >w<; I'm really hoping that the action oriented qualities of the game work out well.

This game is going to be disturbing…

    …and I like it.

This looks really awesome!!!! Im glad Atlus is trying their hand at more HD games!

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I’ll try to suppress my fear of horror games so that I can play this

    • karasuKumo

Same here, I’m a big wuss when it comes to freaky games but this looks too interesting.

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

Well, it is made by Atlus, nyan. We gotta play it even if it gives us trauma! :D

        • karasuKumo

True, we’ve got to look those monsters in the ass/face and climb like a mountain goat XD

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

im with you, everytime that radio in silent hill 1 started to sound, it scared the hell out of me, in the middle of the day, WITH A FRIEND ahhhhhhHhhhh

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I…I….I can’t play Silent Hill without wetting my pants. (Exaggeration, but you get the idea)…

But Catherine! We shall do for her sake!

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Those eyes on the monster looks like they could be Catherine’s eyes…
Still need to see more gameplay shots. The action can’t just be scaling…

Also, as much as I like Studio 4C’s animation, am I the only one who feels this game is so pretty there’s no real need for the 2D cutscenes? I wonder why they went with it… to save time? Couldn’t achieve certain expressions/ body language with the 3D? Just wondering.

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

i actually prefer 2D scenes, i dunno, it feels better than to see 3D models trying to give out some exressions

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I like 2D animation as well, but it’s becoming a discrepancy that takes me out of the game. Back in the primative era of PS1 3D, seeing pre-rendered CG cut scenes or anime FMVs was something of a reward, a break from the jaggy visuals I was playing. But now graphics have evolved to a delectable level where I feel non-in-game cutscenes are more of an unnecessary distraction than what I wish the game could look like. Also, it seems like some of the cutscenes are in engine, an inconsistency that makes it even more jarring.

I’m probably making it sound more drastic than I actually feel; I’m not out for blood because the cutscenes aren’t consistently in 3D.

        • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

i think maybe star ocean 4 scared the hell out of me with the 3D models scenes, they were really creepy =.=’ but i loved when they talked and we see their anime drawings, they looked pretty cool.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

            It’s the eyes, man… the EYES! (O)_(O)

Eyes are key to making believable expressions. The better the eyes are animated, the more lively the characters feel. SE4′s characters had empty, soulless eyes that hardly moved… Of course, body language goes a long way as well.

  • MemeticRichard

Looks more like an ass instead of a heart…lol Even more so with the legs sticking up.

For some reason, it reminds me of this film…”Teeth”

    XDXDXD

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

      A man’s nightmare indeed.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

    Why is it wearing stockings…

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

      That’s digusting. I didn’t even notice.

      • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

What’s worse is that it looks like testicles…

        • http://www.twitter.com/christaran Chris Taran

It’s a butt, and it’s appendages are legs. It’s supposed to be the twisted rear of either Catherine or Katherine. I thought that was pretty apparent. And the baby monster is suppose to represent his unborn child with Katherine, which is why he (the baby) calls him “Papa.”

Basically this is a nightmare about his fears and concerns in his life (among other things). Very Freud.

So far it looks really good, but I am wondering if it has uses a battle system of some kind or if it is purely about running away.

You know I should’ve known this wasn’t “Action/Adventure”. Japan is terrible at categorizing games. Almost everything is labeled an RPG even it isn’t. (Crystal Bearers,3rd Birthday.etc)

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

What do you mean? Hes climbing a tower, thats pretty Action Adventure to me!

      • Joanna

hm, I was under the impression that action adventure was more about combat than platforming, while games classified as platformers are more about manoeuvring (jumping, climbing, etc) than combat. That’s the reason Mario games are called platformers (while still including some ‘action’ combat), while Zelda is classified as an Action Adventure (while still involving manoeuvring around obstacles). Hence, Catherine’s “action” parts should, technically, fall under the platformer genre.

Personally though, this looks more like a horror game, so if I’d have to call it something I would call it horror. But that’s just the vibe I’m getting.

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

well, basically rpg is a role playing game, where you play as the role of a character to do some story or w/e, this is a really basic definition, but those games can still be categorized as “rpg”

Man, I’m hoping this game is going be one strange and twisted mind ****.

  • glemtvapen

From that screenshot of the game, it looks like its going to be a chasing/platformer game. I just hope the Persona team adds more depth to the gameplay than that.

    I’ll still play it though.

That thing in the first thumbnail looks as disgusting as Jedah’s stage in Darkstalkers. It also screams “Papa…!”

I need my dose of weird gaming related stuff each year and this game looks to deliver.

  • Extra_Life

Haha, at first glance I thought it looked like Majora’s mask, but a longer look reveals a backside with teeth and a massive tongue, crawling up a tower using its feet. Nice! I like the disturbing look of this game. That’s another £35 I need to set aside.

  • WyattEpp

I’m somewhat worried that this will get passed over for an NA release because of the sexual nature of the content. The USA has some very anachronistic leanings on anything remotely related to the reality that people do the horizontal tango until the evening telly comes on, and they have sexualised children prancing around on stage. But games are for kids; everyone knows that!

And thus I fret that the ESRB might cave to the inordinate pressure of facing down potential government censorship and attempt to give it an AO rating.

    • Strain42

I doubt it. There are plenty of games with sexual content and even nudity in them that make it over just fine. I have no question at all that this game will be M, but since this is Atlus’ first HD project, and it’s getting duel console releases, I’m 98% certain that this game will see stateside release.

  • RAVENKam

I’m getting a No More Heroes vibe from this project. Feels fresh, I’m in.
