J-Rock Artist Superfly’s Booming Vocals Chosen For The 3rd Birthday Theme

By Spencer . October 26, 2010 . 3:08pm

imageAya is going to have a rock theme song in Japan. Square Enix announced a collaboration with J-rock artist Superfly who wrote the theme song for The 3rd Birthday.

Superfly’s overwhelming vocals caught Square Enix’s attention. The publisher thought this fits how Aya’s bouts with enemies are tied to the fate of the world.

The game’s theme song, "Eyes On Me", will be released on December 15. The 3rd Birthday overdives into stores on December 22.

Wasn’t that also the name of the song from FF8?

    • WonderSteve

      Yep…quite a coincidence here.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Except that one was sung by Faye Wong. I did always found it odd that Square went and hired a Cantonese pop idol rather than a native Japanese one… to sing an English song.

Admittedly, Faye Wong was the hotness across Asia circa ’90s and her English was pretty good.

      • Aoshi00

Despite her popularity, I thought it was very odd too to bring in a HK singer to sing an English theme song, it just felt neither here nor there. I thought the lyrics were funny and her singing/pronunciation wasn’t that good either. It would’ve been much better if they had a Jpn singer doing a Jpn song or an native English speaker doing an English song.. I guess FF was just becoming too “pop-ish” at the time until the Gooch did something w/ IX going back to the fantasy roots and using someone like Shiratori Emiko. FF8 is the only exception too, w/ a non native eng. speaker doing an english theme..I don’t think Faye Wong should be characterized as an idol, more like a diva maybe, I really hated her.. especially her debut song.. I guess that’s one of the reasons I didn’t like VIII..

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Not much of a Faye Wong fan myself, though I liked her in Chungking Express. :P

Seems like FF is back in the “pop-ish” phase with XIII. Maybe the next… you know what, it’s so inconceivably far away I don’t even want to talk about the next one.

          • Aoshi00

Yep, that’s why, she’s too artsy and pretentious, stuck up like a queen too.. I don’t like that type.. we don’t even know when Versus would be out, that’s where the Gooch comes in, I think Last Story would be very epic, can’t wait! As for FF, S-E can do whatever they want, I don’t really care anymore :(…

      • NeoTechni

I know they are different songs, just pointing out the name similarity.

        I agree, it is odd

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I figured you knew, just making discussion. :P

  • thebanditking

Hmm she seems OK, her sound kind of reminds me of KT Tunstall.

Cool music video, sounds like a good rock band. Sometimes I wonder what is the average career span for a J-pop artist, it seems like every new anime or game uses a new singer, just so many of them. I like Ayaka who did the Crisis Core theme song, I’ve listened to her other songs from a Jpn drama.

        Whhhhhhhhhhhhyyyy?

        • Aoshi00

Did you like it :)? I first heard Ayaka from the theme for the drama “Sapuri” (wow, that’s many years ago arldy..Ito Misaki was in it). I guess this singer is a pretty good choice for 3rd B-day.

Ayaka can do better than Why? IMO
Still nice voice although she retired (or hiatus I forgot)

I want MISIA back on anime/game theme song!

            If i wanna choose .. i will choose Ayumi Hamasaki – untitled ~for her~ =)

      • thebanditking

I know what you mean the J-pop artists seem to fade out faster then any other genre/type. I have too many to list but I like a lot of the 90′s J-pop artists. Speaking of music Aoshi have you ever heard anything from a band called TRiX? They are awesome and way too unknown in my opinion, anyone who liked/misses the old in house music bands (like SEGA had) should check them out.

        • Aoshi00

Nah I don’t know of Trix, but very nice tunes indeed.

I don’t listen to J-Pop much nowadays, before I would still hear theme songs from J-drama but I don’t watch them now either.. I used to be a sucker for the romantic/soapy ones in the 90′s, say like this song “Hello My Friend” by Matsutouya Yumi for the drama “Kimi to Ita Natsu” (A Summer w/ You), Tsutsui Michitaka was hot back then. There were all so bitter sweet and I was like 16, man I’m old now..

I found a Miku version of it too lol..

I love Superfly voice on her song “Ai wo Komete Hanataba wo”

I think that song made her famous IIRC

  • ChaosPaladinFayt

omaigod….seriously?>.> of ALL the jpop artists……….they just HAD to choose superfly…she’s like the hippie of the jpop world….IMHO

    • Joanna

      I’d rather have a hippie than a KAWAII-MOE!!!111! singer who can’t sing.

      • ChaosPaladinFayt

who said the singer had to be kawiii-moe~~~ who can’t sing? there are plenty of jpop artists that arent KAWAII-MOE that can sing, and kawaii moe onli applies to anime, games and manga…not real ppl -____-”

        • Joanna

No, I’m pretty sure you can apply it to real people as well by the way they personify themselves (childish, naive) and if they use that high squeaky voice (in an attempt to sound like a child) that I think sounds horrible and has no place being called music.

Honestly, I haven’t heard of this artist before, but she sounds great. I love her vocals. I don’t know why you disparage against her so and why a ‘hippie’ is something negative.

          • ChaosPaladinFayt

Please define the term moe, here, ill even give it to u now

moe:is a Japanese slang word originally referring to a strong interest in a particular type or style of character in video games, anime or manga. …

therefore, you cannot relate real life to moe, since it does not apply to “people”

“an attempt to sound like a child”? i dont think they are attempting to sound like a child, im almost certain most of them have their voice naturally like that. And you saying that that kind of music is horrible is like me saying i dont like hippies. so touche. its all about personal opinion. You like this kind of music, and I don’t, so we both have our differences, so what’s the point in bashing the other person for not liking something? End of discussion.

          • Joanna

Sure moe started out as anime/manga-only but it grew into a cultural phenomena in Japan. Furthermore, moe isn’t only about art, it is about characterization, therefore, it can be applied to real people portraying an image, in this case, their image as a singer.

As for calling it terrible. This is my honest opinion and I’m sorry if I offend you, but these singers don’t sing properly, they don’t have the right tone because they perpetually sing at a really high squeaky voice. Singing properly requires you to change the tone of your singing to fit the tone of the music.

And last I checked, the human body was identical across races, so I don’t see how that voice is ‘normal’ and not a product of the moe phenomena.

          • ChaosPaladinFayt

            ok.
            1. let’s stop this discussion like two civilized ppl before this gets out of hand
            2. im 100% ppl can sing like that
            3. when were we even talking about race
            4. there is no such thing as what u call “normal”
            5. why did u bring up kawaii-moe when i never even mentioned it. u are basically saying that u know of two type of singers, KAWAII-MOE ones, and this kind. Don’t you think you’re being kind of narrow minded since u can only think of KAWAII-MOE artists…..and superfly

          • Joanna

Sure fine. I don’t really care about prolonging this argument. I’ll just clarify two things:1. I brought up race because you said that’s how they naturally sound and I’m saying that’s not true. It’s a produce of culture since I have never heard a human being talk in that kind of tone except when personifying a moe character in anime/game or singing in that voice. So I brought in race as a means to show you it is irrelevant to race, which you seemed to be suggesting by saying these singing voices for Japanese people are normal.2. These kinds of singers seem to be all the rage nowadays. I admit, it was wrong of me to assume you meant such a singer would be better. That was a bit of a negative reaction against the moe culture on my part. I disdain it and I think it’s far too pervasive and it’s hurting the industry’s creativity with 1 dimensional characters, but I digress.

      • SouskeSagara

I’m pretty sure you are referring to yourself as the hippie Joanna because Everyone Clearly knows KAWAII-MOE > Hippie’s. All hippies do is smoke weed and Clearly you are high, so please for the sake of the world don’t make all hippie’s look bad. Thank you

      • SouskeSagara

um…. this comment isn’t really great on your part because you have a one sided argument…. a hippie supporting another hippie isn’t really a good supporting argument don’t you agree Joanna?

        • Joanna

I never knew I had a stalker. You must know a lot about me to state that I am a hippie high on weed.

          • SouskeSagara

I don’t really need to stalk you Every person already knows your high so it’s a give away your high on weed you stinkin hippie

    • SouskeSagara

I agree Chaos why the hell did they have to choose superfly… they aren’t that great but good enough to say decent…. so many more suitable artist to choose from
