Persona 2: Innocent Sin Then And Now

By Spencer . November 12, 2010 . 3:31am

You may have heard (we’re guessing!) Atlus is bringing Persona 2: Innocent Sin to PSP. Similar Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, Atlus gave the 1999 PsOne game a facelift. Let’s take a look at how the PSP version stacks up against the original.

Screenshots from the fan translated PsOne game are on the left, PSP screens are on the right.

Atlus really modernized the battle interface with useful additions like a turn order and emotion gauge during demon negotiation. The character portraits make Persona 2: Innocent Sin feel more like the later Persona games too. Also during combat, Persona 2: Innocent Sin has cut-in screens when you use sync skills, a feature not in the PsOne release.

While Atlus updated Persona 2: Innocent Sin for PSP, the game has an option to play through the game with the original music and opening movie. Persona 2: Innocent Sin is slated for a winter release in Japan.

Doesn’t seem to have much changes I’d say… Graphic enhancement is detected.. Changes in text box design .. Also some addition or deletion here and there… I thought they will do something like P4…

    • urbanscholar

Like more streamlined or overhaul wise?

    • OneOkami

Shoji Meguro said it was going to be a touch-up job in the essence of the original Persona remake. Thats pretty much what it looks like to me.

      • enorka miho

My bad.. din really see that.. i guess i was expecting too much… :(

  • MemeticRichard

Definitely has a considerably more streamlined interface and improvement compared to the original Persona PSP port.

  • Shane Guidaboni

I like the original blue text box better than the new red, but everything else looks polished and cleaned up. Very nice.

You can still travel around the world map, right? The screen shot comparison makes it look like you only choose a destination while the original has the map markers and you’re little marker to move around.

    • Exkaiser

Take a closer look. They both have the map markers and your little movable icon.

Actually, I’m not sure where you’re getting this idea at all, I’m afraid!

      • Shane Guidaboni

Oh, you’re right! I feel like the screens changed. I was seeing something different before.

        • Exkaiser

Maybe there was a shot of the area selection screen in that slot when you posted?

          • Shane Guidaboni

Yeah, I think that’s what I saw and I wasn’t sure if they changed it to just be a selection screen.

    • Testsubject909

I will agree that the blue one seems far more inviting. Reminds me of the velvet room in a way. *coughs*

But anyways, the red is probably far more representative of the character. So I’m okay with it. Who knows, I just might get used to it or even like it. (That and, what games out there do you remember using red for it’s text/menu/HUD?)

  • Mark Shaver

That Philleon Guy looks like Zuko lol.

expected more then this…-_-I will say this is the official port.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Lookin’ goooood! But it doesn’t feel right without Batsu. Feels incomplete. … I’m such a whiner.

  • Ujn Hunter

Atlus is really missing a big opportunity to put both Persona 2 games on one disc. I’m only interested in the complete package… :

    • kariohki

And I think they’ve said that both games wouldn’t fit on one UMD.

      • Ale598

Then let it be 2 UMDs. Falcom did it why Atlus can’t?

        • honorless

          Here’s my take on it:

Of course there’ll be a second UMD for the other part of Persona 2.

…It’ll just be a completely separate boxed/PSN release. No point in leaving money on the table—they know the fans will pay full retail for both parts.

Maybe later on, when they’re reissued in “Atlus Best” form, they’ll be sold together in a slipcase ala Irregular Hunter X/Rockman Rockman or Rockman DASH 1+2.

  • puchinri

I like the new look/changes. At first the red didn’t look like a good fit, but I think it looks darn good. Especially the battle screens. I’m excited~.

And the music made me think, Persona Music Live was basically P3 and 4 with some Trinity Soul, and since we’re getting P1, P2 and P5 is well, somewhere, does this mean we’ll get another Persona Music Live at some point? Because that would be beautiful.

  • cmurph666

Jumping the gun here since they haven’t even announced a NA release but I want P2 Eternal Punishment too!!

  • Sylar100

Looks nice, i loved playing through the translation of Innocent Sin, very good game, although EP felt more like a chore after beating IS. Poor Tatsuya still looks like a girl in some pictures.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

Ok, I might be too excited :S

  • Ale598

Okay, question: What’s the difference between this and the newer persona? I’ve only played P3:P and I read before than the previous Persona are different. I wanna know which are the differences to make a buying decision…if this ever comes out in NA.

No social links, everybody can change personae.

  • Destiny☆

I wonder if this version will make it overseas, after Persona 4 it would be pretty silly to not localize Persona 2 only because of Jun.
