It begins. The pay for use characters 1 month after the game is released. Of course they’ll charge a fee, its Capcom after all. These practices are what really tick me off about this generation of console gaming, they try to squeeze every nickel and dime off gamers.

Apart from the “get off my lawn” rant, that special edition looks pretty nice.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

“DLC” is a true misnomer and travesty when they’re already on the disc and you pay to unlock them. It’s like games don’t have secrets anymore. What a joy it use to be to discover those. Now instead of challenging the gamer and then rewarding them with hidden treasures they just make gamers buy the stuff. Which to me, doesn’t make them hidden or treasures anymore.

      • Code

It’s a mixed bag imo, personally I’d have rathered BlazBlue’s 3 extra characters been on disc, so that I didn’t need to have 750MB worth of patches on my HDD, which take up my space, which I still am required to have them to play the game online. If I’m not paying for them it’s locking up 750MB on my HDD. At least on the disc it wouldn’t have been using my personal space.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yea, you’re right. I really shouldn’t be arguing for “real” DLC, as my own HDD is running out of space. I’m think I’m being worked up over very little. XD

In fact, I should really just shut up about it, honestly, because nostalgia can really blind me sometimes. I forget the fact that DLC can be an interesting way to expand the content and increase the longevity of a game I already bought. Plus while I don’t like the idea of DLC, I have nothing against the content in them. In fact, if I see some I like, I’ll buy it sooner or later.

          • Code

lol, no worries >w<; I think DLC is sort of a case by case situation as to how it's best to handle it that is most fair to the customer, not saying Aksys could have had those 3 characters ready for BB's disc in time, but it does beg the point if they have to put 750MB of patches on the HDD for them, maybe they weren't ready enough xpx;; But I'm the same DLC is something I'll sometimes pick up sometimes skip on, and there's been DLC I've really enjoyed. There's been things occasionally which rub me the wrong way DLC wise, but yeah I think developers need to particularly consider with something as large as character's what's going to be least imposing on players who do not purchase the content.

  • Guest

Remember when games used to be sold complete? Bitch about Nintendos lack of online push but Im glad that the devs aren’t able to pull crap dlc and are “forced” to release omg complete games!! There’s always the exceptions though like Tales of Beta.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

They’re not selling you an incomplete game. Some things just can’t be done in time for release. They’re giving you at least thirty characters in the game. That’s a full roster. By making some characters DLC, they can give characters to the people who want them, but they don’t have to take up a precious roster slot on the disc game.

      • It´s part true, however, if you remember the MvC2 roster, there were like 56 characters (even if half of them were useless XD), it feels like an incomplete game =/

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Right, but they took those sprites from all the games before it. This time they have to make every character model from scratch. And it’s an HD game so each character takes up a lot more space than a simple sprite.

        • Exkaiser

The only useless character was the second wolverine.

Oh hey there Wolverine, we repackaged you with longer claws are you a new character yet?

        • Code

As much as I’m pro-2D and spriting — MvsC2’s cast is perhaps a good example of stretching animators beyond there means x__x; The lack of frames in most of the character’s animations/attacks is frighteningly low, I wouldn’t exactly be first to say it’s a good example of a “complete” game.

      • MrRobbyM

While I agree, sometimes, Devs just take advantage because they want more money.

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Yeah, sometimes that is the case, like with the Soul Caliber IV DLC. But these guys are really in it for the fans. If you watch the developer diaries, they’re really trying to pack as much as they can onto the disk as time allows. Or they’re just acting that way so people don’t hate them. But I want to bel~ieve!

          • MrRobbyM

Yeah, in this case, it seems they just can’t fit it in(or a not as good excuse, not enough time). Though, this would be no excuse if the 360 used blu-ray discs.

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Yeah, but that’ll never happen, sadly. To support Blu Ray would be to support Sony, something Microsoft wouldn’t want to do

          • MrRobbyM

You seem to forget something. Microsoft and Sony aren’t enemies, more like Rivals. For example, Microsoft used a Sony HDTV for on of their setups at this past E3(I believe it was E3, not sure, most likely). For MS’s next console, either everything goes digital, which I REALLY doubt. Or they could maybe try again at making a larger capacity disc of their own(if you forget, failed last time)…or use blu-ray.

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

I’m gonna trust my man Pachter. Check out 2:55

      • Well If it was their intent to include them in the first place they should be free. Thats assuming they will have a price tag once they are released via PSN and Live.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

If it’s available at launch, it should be part of the game. Obviously it was created alongside the game; why isn’t it in the game on the disc? Nobody’s going to complain about more content packed in, at least I don’t think so. But when a game launches and there’s already content that must be paid for off the side, it really feels like the devs just cut a chunk out of their finished product and ask for extra money to get it. Moreover, much of the time the “DLC” WILL fit, as shown by numerous “Game of the Year Editions” with all the DLC released up to that point on the disc.

That’s different from, after the game is finished and released, the devs came up with some good ideas, worked on them, and months later released those pieces as DLC.

        • Exkaiser

They’re being released a month after the game.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yea, but… if you get the Special Edition you get them at launch. That means they’re pre-planned, already completed, and thus no different from other launch DLC.

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

No, gamestop.com says you get the characters 4 weeks post-launch

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Actually, most Game of the Year Editions will give you a DLC code or an extra disk. Also, the content isn’t available until 4 weeks after the game launches. But there’s a period between when the game goes gold and the actual launch. During this time is when most devteams work on DLC and can have it for launch. This isn’t the case now, obviously, but the DLC also isn’t available at launch, like I said.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Alright alright, if you don’t mind paying for DLC, that’s fine by me. I just don’t care for it all that much. Even if I’m wrong about MvC’s DLC and GOTY Editions, my point is, I feel anything that’s announced before launch, available around launch or at launch has been thought of well before hand and thus a scheme of greed. If you feel like I’m hating on hardworking devs’ efforts, I’m not, it’s always the corporate side of things that try to juice the money out of consumers and push for this type of nickle & diming.

EDIT: I only have a PS3 and I imagine most of the GOTY editions *could* have the DLC fit on the disc.

  • Hraesvelgr

I’m cool with nonessential content (costumes, etc.) being released as DLC or as preorder/limited content, but having things that should already be in the game released as (most likely) paid content is just low. I don’t have an issue if the content is released as free DLC because of disc space issues or whatever other reason, however.

  • nyrjin

It looks like they’re just trying to push the special edition. They really have every single base covered now, the people playing because it’s related to marvel comics (comic book), the people playing because it’s a capcom game (art book maybe), and the people who are playing because it’s a (I’m going to take what I assume to be a very safe jump here) great fighter(early DLC) even if it will likely be entirely imbalanced. I’m sold on it. Now I have to preorder it…

  • M’iau M’iaut

This coming year everyone’s going to be testing the limits of various DLC and pay to play structures. DLC is going to be available through all the major ways consumers get product — Amazon, Gamestop, console online services — so it will be in everyone’s interest to gravitate the customer over. You are also hearing hints the $40-50 price point will be tried. Expect more $5-10 DLC ‘paks’ to cover that difference. Even that $5 online fee currently required on some used titles for new is not outside possibility.

Personal thoughts of such decisions aside, I’m not ready to call the success or failure of such things either way. Multiple $15 map packs are pretty much a given with any major FPS. It’s not as if people have refused to partake of SFIV character downloads or even horse armor. Even I went to the dark side to pull down all the [email protected] planes for AC4.

Yet, there are still so many players who do not have internet or do not partake of playing games on the various networks. If these folks start to see things being taken away or absolutely requiring a broadband plus a gold account or sony+, they might just walk away completely.

  • MemeticRichard

For a game I was planning on buying day one, having a cheap limited edition that’s only ten bucks more certainly isn’t a deal killer.

Question is, is that February release date legit?

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

No official release date has been confirmed except for early 2011. So February is possible

    • neo_firenze

The direct Gamestop link says March 2, so I’d expect it won’t be any earlier than that.

Edit: Whoops, didn’t see the many Feb. 15 reports since that. Perhaps it got bumped up a couple weeks.

  • I hope it isnt gamestop exclusive, all these promo amazon credits, lol. I had MvC3 preorder because it has a 10$ credit, but if it comes with exclusive day 1 dlc…well (And Jill Valentine too). I only care about the steelbook and characters though.

  • z_merquise

Hah! DLC characters? I’m betting that Capcom would charge us in order to play them even though they should be included in the normal roster in the first place. Gotta thank the people who leaked that information whether it was intentional or not.

I actually prefer Vanessa Shneider (PN 03) or Lynn Kurosawa (Capcom’s Alien vs Predator arcade) but Jill is still a good choice. But what irritates me is Shuma Gorath. Seriously, why that squid? Is it because Capcom loves hentai-tentacles? Not Ghost Rider? Not Iron Fist? Not Luke Cage? Not Moon Knight? Not Black Widow? Not Ms Marvel? Not Psylocke? Not Fantomex? Not the freakin’ Punisher?

When the game was first announced, I was very excited and it got better when they announced Deadpool and Dante. This game would still be good, that’s for sure but I slowly lose my interest.

    • PrinceHeir

lol you do know they debunked most of your list especially Ghost Rider because Marvel said so. it’s not their problem those characters are not appearing.

please Strider, Virgil, Gene, Juri, and one of the Onimusha Chracters(Samonsuke or Jubei?)

  • I don’t have a problem with this, if the characters aren’t on the disc, which I am thinking they very well may be, simply because of how far away the game is, with them announcing DLC already. Still, I’d prefer DLC characters to them just releasing a Super MvC3 in 2012.
Honestly, my only concern, since this seems reasonably priced (only an extra $10 doesn’t bother me), is that the PS3 box will be one of those crazy giant EA-sized boxes that don’t match the rest of my collection. I don’t see why EA keeps insisting on doing that, nor Konami with Lords of Shadows. I am HOPING Capcom stick with what they did with DMC4 and keep it regular sized.

  • Chow

    Um, Jill spoilers anyone? lol

Well, as long as they don’t give her a Cammy-style alpha/zero/vs stage entrace it probably won’t be obvious what the spoiler exactly is. Not that Capcom really cares at this point. :)

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Jill spoilers? Don’t you mean Jill sandwiches?

    • Resident Evil 5 has been out for how long now? I think the statute of limitations has passed on what happens to Jill in it. If you want to play it, the game’s been available for almost two years now.

  • I KNEW they were going to do this. If mainly Megaman and some others that should be there in the first place ends up being DLC, I’m done with Capcom and their unfair, horribly timed and priced DLC.

  • PrinceHeir

    Jill Valentine :D

now i can have my Jill Sandwich ^^

  • If something can be exploited, it will be exploited. This is the future right here.I really wonder how far Capcom, Activision and the likes can go before people finally start not buying their games. I managed to not buy into this DLC fraud. You can do this too.And just for the record: I’m nothing special, I’m not trying to sounds smart by saying “Capcom isn’t a wellfare company”, I’m not trying to place myself as a preacher. But I do have genuine fears for the future of video games.

  • thaKingRocka

I think I just threw up a little over this. What Ono initially said about everyone having access to the same experience was dead-on. This right here is the pits, and a definite buy just became a definite ignore.

    • raymk

You people do know that you don’t have to buy the limited addtion of the game don’t you. Another thing is ono is not even the one behind this game.

      • thaKingRocka

I’m only one person, and I’m well aware that I don’t have to buy the special edition of the game. I am also well aware that Ono is not the one behind this game. You missed the mark on every account, and I am not surprised that you missed my point entirely. Good luck and godspeed.

  • With my job, this shall get preordered.
