Disgaea 4s Prisoner Punishment System Outlined

Punishing characters in Disgaea 4 has more than one purpose, but before you can take advantage of the "educational coaching" system you need to summon a coaching classroom.

And you need to capture an enemy unit Disgaea style by throwing them into the portal where you can pull out player characters.

Once your party knocks the unit out coaching begins. Each class and monster type reacts to coaching in their own way so players should test out different commands. By using the coaching classroom players can convert a prisoner to an ally. But, that’s not all. You can also extort money from weak enemies or make them tell you the location of secret treasures.

Nippon Ichi also revealed a new Disgaea 4 class. The male character above is a Yin-Yang Mage.

I can’t wait for this game , is Europe date revealed anyone knows?

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

At the rate their going it will probably be near the US date of Summer 2011.

  • MizuMikomi

Love these sprites, the more I see them, the more I can’t wait for this game.
Also in that one screen with the Yin Yang mage… isn’t that one character on the upper left the Angel like character that is on the boxart, and in the trailer?

If so then I absolutely love her sprite. Lol

    • Exkaiser

Yeah, looks like that’s the angel character, Volcano.

    • Locklear93

Volcano was my instant favorite too. I was so frustrated as they introduced characters I didn’t care about, and took their sweet time even telling us Volcano’s name. >_<

  • SolidusSnake

Damn I love how this seemingly pointless perversion is shaping up to be an important gameplay mechanism. Oh Nippon Ichi, I truly do love thee.

      Unlike Criminal Girls.

        Apples and oranges, son.

Also bear in mind that NIS is PUBLISHING Criminal Girls–they had nothing to do with its design. That’s Imageepoch.

OK, I take back the worries I had about Disgaea 4 having a ‘punishment’ system. This sounds like it’s really going to be done right. I might actually have to capture a monster for the first time in a Disgaea game.

I’m also hoping the Yin-Yang Mage has some creative new spells/abilities. Disgaea’s always been a bit behind the curve when it comes to abilities that do interesting things (they look interesting, but that’s different). Disgaea 3′s Evility system helped a lot. Hopefully Disgaea 4 will continue in that direction.

I guess I need clarification of the system but it looks good!

If you see an enemy you like, you throw him/her/it into your starting portal, which opens up a minigame. If you’re strong and/or tactical enough, you can get a new party member or items or money or etc.

  • pridesin

Wow, they really improve the game system a lot for this one. This will be the best disgaea game.

      until disgaea 5

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

You mean Disgaea 3 PSP2 that will add all D4 features…

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

          I’m ok with that.

        • Exkaiser

It’ll just add advanced magichange options and dual-wielding.

It’s not like D2P imported all the features from D3.

I approve of how this is sounding, for the Punishment system. That sounds terribly useful, and gives a cooler twist to the capturing enemies element of the game.Looking forward to the Yin-Yang Mage, too. I’m glad they don’t seem to be a Samurai replacement like I was scared of. … hopefully.I just hope, like. REALLY hope that Disgaea 4 doesn’t have the character limitations of Disgaea 3– you could create tons and tons of characters for any situation really in Disgaea 1 and 2. Even full armies of specific creatures for the fun of it. Disgaea 3 forced you to have to put them into storage though if you wanted more, and I found that kinda annoying, to be honest.

Considering that you have the DLC characters and main story characters AND extra characters taking up slots… You really don’t get a lot of room for customization, compared to the older games. That seems a bit backwards.

    • Locklear93

I don’t think they did that because they wanted to. Disgaea 3′s engine was… not great. I’ve got the largest classroom available, but it’s not even completely full, and I get noticeable FPS drops in there while I scroll around the room. Assuming their new engine is better about such things, that may not be a concern.

goodbye free time. I fear hours will be spent, many hours.

If you just use created characters for coaching, I am naming a male gunslinger “Jack Bauer.”

      Dammit! Dammit! Dammit!

        Problem, Charles? 8D

XD You beat me to it.

  • MarkMario

Now I need to get an PS3 =_=

  • Draparde

I wonder how diffrent the yin-yang mage will be from the normal mages.

    • Exkaiser

Probably not too much. Maybe they’ll get some new spells of some sort.

Then again, there’s a certain point where all the classes just kind of feel the same. Well, maybe with Evilities they feel more differentiated in Disgaea 3, but I haven’t played that.

      • Code

Evilities do help a whole lot in that respect, you can swap some of them between classes and stuff, but they do help make each class/monster feel a bit more individualized. But still even with them I do agree, most classes do ultimately become a little samey in the long run.
