The Two Types Of Fighters In Phantom Breaker

By Spencer . November 19, 2010 . 4:27pm

5pb is stepping out of their comfort circle with an original fighting game for Xbox 360. Phantom Breaker classifies characters as either quick style or hard style.

Quick style characters, as the name implies, are nimble. They’re fast, good at evading attacks, and have long combos. Hard style characters specialize in defense and heavy hitting attacks. Quick characters dodge. Hard characters block. Both are vulnerable to throws.

Glowing orbs and lightning effects appear when players trigger the counterbalance system. It’s possible to cancel a rival’s attack with one of your own in Phantom Breaker, but 5pb didn’t explain how this works. Until next time, here’s a look at the game’s cast of characters.

None of those characters look remotely “hard style” or “heavy” in a traditional fighting game sense. I was wondering before, but I still can’t quite tell…

…Are those 2d sprites, 3d models, or 2d sprites made from 3d models?

    • Code

Honestly no idea, I wanna say 2D sprites perhaps made from 3D models, but it’s hard to tell for sure until we see it in motion.

    • glemtvapen

Pfft. There is one who obviously uses “heavy style”

      ‘Top heavy’ style :3

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Oh you got me there, and you got me good. XD
We could always use more cheese around here. *high five*

  • glemtvapen

There is only one guy? Wait… is he even a ‘guy’? O_O;Feels like one of those hentai harem games turned into a fighter.

    • Chiupon

I understand what you mean. I hate harem. D: I hope it’s a very flat chested reverse trap.

      • That’s even worse. I hate yuri fags.

        • Chiupon

ffff. Yuri fags hate you. D: <

        • Guess you like yaoi then.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Hey, Melty Blood and Big Bang Beat are excellent fighting games! >:I

      • How’s Big Bang Beat?

Since I come from a Guilty Gear-ish background, Melty Blood was fun for me

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

The pace is not quite as fast as Melty Blood, but the combo system lies somewhere between the more grounded King of Fighters and the aerial heavy Guilty Gear.

          Have a look yourself:

There’s only been 1-2 minor revisions, don’t play the sequel because it wasn’t made by the original people.

  • I wish the sprites were crispier…

  • Code

    I have to admit, I was surprised when I saw that this was by 5pb, as terrible as it sounds I was expecting something marginally worse, lol xpx;; This looks like it could maybe have some potential, the character sprites/models are excellent looking! I’m hoping maybe they smooth out the hud and get some gameplay out — but yeah still much better then I expected opo;

  • BadenBadenPrinny

I just hope they rethink the one button specials

    • Code

One button specials? Could maybe work it like Senko, they just make a specific button an input button, you do all your special inputs on!

  • Big Breasted Miku. They’re Really thinking out of the box with this one, folks.

The Prisoner/Goth Girl, The Business Suit Woman, and The SchoolGirl Kunoichi look the coolest IMO. The one with the purple sword is pretty decent too.

  • i cant help but to notice how none of these designs look unique considering i have seen characters that look the same in other things some are latest too

  • andref

I hope that’s small for a game that comes with two fighting styles

  • Game sounds pretty bad so far and the character designs are really generic, but those sprites sure are pretty.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

How can you tell those are sprites, may I curiously ask?

      • How can you NOT tell those are sprites, may I curiously ask?

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I dunno. It’s an honest question. They look like they could be 3d models to me. The outlines, the angular shading, the slightly stiff poses… Maybe I’m too used to seeing pixelated fighters, even the highest res ones have clear pixels (Blazblue). I wouldn’t ask if I knew. The more I look at them, the more it seems like they are 3d models, possibly traced into 2d and touched up. Just wanted another opinion is all.

EDIT: You know what? Forget it. I’m blind. Looked at them again and now 90% sure they are sprites. The faces and hands are too imperfect. No pixels probably because they are drawn in high resolution with a blur filter on them like the one from HD MvC2.

  • MemeticRichard

    This looks freakin’ terrible. :/

I could give it a tap on the shoulder if it was, say, a PC doujin fighter. But a full blown 360 game? lol k

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

      Maybe it’s a budget 360 game…

      • MemeticRichard

*Maybe* I could pass it off as an Arcade title…but still… Tons of better looking, and OLDER stuff out there…

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I’m completely with you there. Too bad new, quality doujin fighters seemed to have tapered off.

        • Ladius

Nice to see a fighter dismissed before we even have a chance to know the game’s complete mechanics and full roster, not to mention see it in motion to understand how well the sprites are animated and…. you know? play it.
I guess the old “this game is shxt, I have a screenshoot to prove it!” habit is hard to dismiss.

  • Ladius

Really cool, every new 2d beat’em up is good news to me, and the fact that 5pb is catering to shmup and 2dbeu enthusiasts is really noteworthy since there aren’t many developers still interested in that niche (KoF13 can’t came soon enough >__>).

Can’t understand the “not original design, meh” comments, if we followed that line of thought we wouldn’t be able to hype 95% of this industry’s output (maybe I’m being too generous with the % ?). Plus, I have seen people idolizing far worse characters just because they starred on moe anime 218923#.

  • Yukito

Now, I am not one that goes for big breasts or anything, but that girl in the white/red, either her breasts are really long and thin, or she has one fat mono-boob. Really, her chest looks so……… bad.

  • JustaGenericUser

    >My face when it’s not on PS3>My face when I realize I’m not on 4chan so I can’t post reaction imagesAlso, none of those girls better be a trap or I’m gonna scream murder.

EDIT: Those sprites are really tall, too. How can you move around?

  • 2D HD sprites, just the way I like it!

  • MarkMario

I like the character designs :3

  • Guest

All of that creepy stuff needs to go along with loli.

  • Guest

Why is the XBox only? Once again a company not playing to the strengths of their market and instead to one that doesn’t care or barely exists

  • Chow

Ooo, the description of the blocking style of these Quick characters makes me think of how Spider-Man’s blocking animations should be like in the fighting games he’s been in.
