Tale Of The Last Promise’s Battle System Gets Up Close And Personal

By Spencer . November 29, 2010 . 8:42am

In Tale of the Last Promise, the magic kingdom of Yggdra and steel cold Savi Shantie soldiers are at war. Wolf and Ceres, the game’s main characters, lead the fight against this buzzsaw arm boss(?) in first person perspective battles.

Imageepoch’s upcoming PSP game is a dungeon RPG. The combat layout is similar to 7th Dragon, Class of Heroes and Wizardry. It appears the game has a two row system for the heroes and enemies. A second battle screenshot has a robot looming in the background who may be part of the fight.

    With permadeath.
You have no idea how much this excites me. I need this game.

  • They better localize it!!!!

    • It seems NISA will be working their a*sses off for us, so dont worry and love NISA :D

      • but with so many projects on hand i wonder how long does it take for them to release the game?

        • So many?… uhh let me remeber, i think they only have ar tonelico 3 and prinny 2, so i think they are ok (im not counting the anime though) they also have disgaea 4, but the disgaeas dont have much dialogue so…

          • Ereek

You forgot Neptunia. I’d say Totori will probably get a release, too.And yes, Disgaea generally does have a good bit of text, what with all of the items, weapons, skills, the like. At least compared to something like, say, Ys or even EO.

          • Yeah i forgot Neptunia, stupid me -.-, dunno about totori though. But with weapons descriptions you dont have to record audio, and the descriptions of these weapon’s games are generally short, skills is that much of a big deal either (depends on how they are writte, full kanji skills surely are the harder).

I dont think it can be compared to YS, considering it have towns, and people in there, and people that give quest, etc…

          • Cant edit -.-, when i talked about wpns description, etc, i was talking about Disgaea :P

          • 5 projects are a handful though if u ask me… but, since there aren’t allot of dialogues.. phew… still I hope they will not have a one years delay from the JP release..

        • Unless the company has been hiring like crazy or outsourcing some of the translations maybe, the imageepoch games couldnt possible come out fast here, I would expect summer 2011 and beyond…

So you can’t see the characters attack or what?

    • We cant really say yet, maybe is a 1st person when battling, but maybe the characters appear and attack, once you choose to.
Still, it seems they will keep the 1st person battles dungeon crawling thing, so i dont be surprised if they dont.
Also, im quite sure there is yet more to see in the battles, knowing them, they surely put some tweeks around

  • Wohoo! i didnt expected it to be 1st person (yes even after knowing is a dungeon crawling rpg) This will be sexy… is like a dungeon rpg fused with a normal rpg but AND GSGF(UJgsujg dont know how to explain it

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I hate 1st person battles in RPGs. Hopefully, it will be like DQ VIII, in which you actually see the characters moving/attacking, but even then… I like seeing my party members.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

It saves them a crap load of time and money not having to animate attacks and set up elaborate battle cameras/angles and whatnot (not to mention worrying about optimizing for lag/slowdown due to more polys on screen).

…But I agree. I prefer 3rd person over 1st person always, be it RPGs, shooters, horror, wtvr.

      • Ereek

I wouldn’t say always. Bethesda couldn’t make good third person controls/battle system to save its life. Other than running around town, I’d never use third person in those games. And in DQVIII and IX it dramatically slows down the battle system compared to the older games. I mean, I understand liking being able to see your characters, but for me it’s somewhat annoying to have the battle system slower because of it. The latter is just a matter of opinion, of course.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Ah, can’t disagree there… Oblivion’s 3rd person view is terribad… I hated how my character would slide around when I’m strafing; actually the movement looked awkward no matter what I was doing (except walking forward). The walking animation didn’t match the pace I was moving at, the jumping was only animated by 1 frame… God awful for sure.

As for DQ VIII, yea the battle system chugged, but I can’t quite blame that on not having 1st person… plenty of other RPGs don’t have slow down from being able to see your party. More like lack of optimization I imagine.

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Argh, I thought I had erased Bethesda’s horrifying 3rd person animations from my mind for good.

I guess the battle speed also depends on the battle system. In The Last Ranker, battles were fast and satisfying, with excellent animations. Other games have the option to increase the speed (Hexyz Force, for instance).

But I guess Imageepoch are not aiming for an innovative battle system at all (not criticizing, just stating).

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yeah, but as I said above, it seems a lazy way to do things, you know? And if they don’t make any animations for the party at all, I’ll be really disappointed. It’ll just take some time getting used to, I suppose.

    • 1st person is what you can pretty much expect with dungeon crawling games, but i hope we see the chars when they attack, i wouldnt mind if they dont anyway

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Even so… Yeah, it’s not like I’m not going to play the game because of it, but it strikes me as a lazy way to do it (maybe I’m just spoiled).

    • Aoshi00

I don’t like 1st person either, like Yusaku said, it feels cheap, I guess Wizard of Oz the Yellow Brick Road on the DS was like that, there’s not much dialogue btwn the chars, you can’t see them in battle screen (just Dorothy running on the path), so their presence is very weak, they might as well not be there.I kind of like how they did it in Archaic Sealed Heat, the top screen show your party members and the bottom screen show your enemies (but they’re both facing you, the pre-rendered animation looked great though), you move or tap your stylus during attack animation to do extra damage sometimes. For shooters too, I like third person much much more like Mass Effect, Gears, Uncharted, RE4/5 etc, I need to see the character I’m controlling over the shoulder. I don’t do well in first person like Killzone 2, feels a little disorienting to me, that’s why Metroid Prime wasn’t really for me but for Bioshock I put up w/ it because I got sucked into the story, also I like to see my char interact w/ the others.Anyway, I like the design of this game, not sure if the dungeon Wizardry style gameplay is for me though..

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

1st person perspective can definitely be done right, just not in RPGs… I prefer 3rd person perspective as well, but I like 1st person. I wouldn’t want to play games like Bioshock and Modern Warfare (people may hate it, but I think Infinity Ward really nailed how to use the perspective to immerse the player) with a 3rd person camera. But in RPGs, you’re just… looking at the enemies. It’s lame. Regarding the gameplay, as long as the story is good, I think I can put up with it…As for Archaic Sealed Heat, that’s a pretty good use of the dual screen!

  • I hope that girl is a fighter and playable character!

Has any class of Heroes been localized?!

    • Ereek

Yes, Class of Heroes 1 was localized. It’s very easy for its genre, but considering you don’t like hard games it might be a bit too much for you.

If you’re looking to get into the genre, I’d recommend something like The Dark Spire first, since that’s similar to Wizardry. Wizardry is what a lot of the current genre is based off of.

      • I dont think The Dark Spire will be good choice for him (considering the theme/colors/etc) xD, im sure he will feel better starting out with Etrian Odessy series (most of dungeon crawlers are hard so is pretty hard to choose anyway) but i felt class of heroes was harder -.-

      • But does it have voice acting?!

  • malek86

It looks pretty cool, actually. I might have it check it out.

  • …I’ll be waiting patiently, NISA.

(After development is finished, of course.)

  • meh dont like 1st person rpg… feels really old.. really really old.. and ima sucker for fancy attacks
EDIT- I gave up on class of heroes beacause of this!! I mean it wasnt hard for an average RPG gamer but the no show attacks made me go bleh

  • ThunderGod_Cid

    First-person battles huh…..
Well that’s one less RPG I need to pick up.

  • Chiupon

It seems like it’d be a waste for them to create such gorgeous character models and not even do simple attack animations; hopefully, it does switch to a third person view after commands are input. D: Otherwise…

  • This game looks great, I see good character models, and it’s 1st person? Such a waste.

Hopefully it’s 3rd person when you choose your commands otherwise….I’ll probably skip it. :/

  • Noooooooo… DX

    I hate first-person perspective in RPGs… unless it’s a first-person RPG, then it’s okay.
