Disgaea 4’s Animated Opening Has A Dragon Quest Joke

By Spencer . December 2, 2010 . 2:39am

Disgaea 4 won’t be out for a couple of months, but you don’t have to wait until February to watch the game’s animated opening. Nippon Ichi released it today.

Here’s the Prinny packed video.

Valbatoze, the vampire main character, appears to have a love interest. Ah, maybe that’s why he gave up his powers and now works as a Prinny guard.

  • neocatzon

It can make a good anime (if done right)

  • Chiupon

Am I the only one who noticed Flonne’s new outfit? :D

    • Testsubject909

Guess she finally got her full license and is now battling Evangelions.

    • Shuryou

You do realize that’s not Flonne, but the new Angel class?
In the video are also the Professor and Taoist Mage.

      • I haven’t read anything about a new angel class. Do you have anything to back that up?

      • LastFootnote

I’m almost positive it’s not Flonne, but I think it’s more likely to be a unique opponent rather than a new class.

EDIT: Nevermind. After watching again with the power of freeze frame, it’s pretty clear that that is Flonne. Huh.

  • Testsubject909

    DAY 1
And every other reaction of excitement and desire to gain this game asap.

On another note, lovely bunch of references here and there and an inetresting boost in quality for their op if you ask me. Not only that, their character seems all the more badass and silly and I for one am loving it.

    • I agree. I can’t wait to see this game next year.

  • malek86

Could this be the first time in years I actually get a new Disgaea game? It’s sure looking like it.

Any info about a western release date?

    • Ereek

Summer 2011 for the west. But remember that Summer can mean anything from June to September. It might be better to expect it later rather than sooner.

  • Ereek

It’s very tempting to watch this, but I told myself I wouldn’t pay attention to any movie about this game until I’ve played it for myself. The comments are making it difficult though.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Ignore the comments! I’ll do the same. After all, it’s my reunion with Disgaea after so many years, gotta make it special.

That way, you will be able to experience it in your glorious HDTV (or SD, whatever) and then you’ll be able to play it right after that, which should be much more satisfying.

So, let’s resist the urge together. It’s easier, right?

      … No…? Ok…

    • But its just the anime opening! Come on~~ you know you want it~~ Its pretty good

    • joesz

Sometimes,The consecutive news about a single game is like playing the game in a weird way.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Which absolutely sucks, because on one hand, you want to stay informed about the game and see new stuff so that the wait becomes bearable, but then, when the game actually comes out, it’s all too familiar. And it shouldn’t be, because it’s a new game. Damn, that reminds me of Arkham Asylum. When I played it for the first time, it was like I had already seen it all: bosses, locations, small surprises, Scarecrow scenes… All my fault, of course. There’s a really thin line between getting hyped and getting spoiled, and I’ve crossed it too many times now. Well, it has taught me to be more careful about media from coming games….. But it’s hard to resist sometimes =P

        • I did the same thing for Kingdom Hearts II. Saw everything on japanese gameplay stream and then wanted to see how it would translate when localized. The wait for that game was unbearable. xD I knew everything before the game was out.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

…. I did the exact same thing =/

        • I’m playing Nier now and the intro movie is just a horror of spoilers. There’s a major event in the game that has a tragic ending where the intro pretty much told me exactly what was going to happen. I couldn’t believe how much it tells you about things that should’ve been surprises.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Crap, you’re right, and it sucks that you didn’t know that… Have you beaten it yet? There are still many, dare I say, shocking revelations, but still… Maybe the lack of context saved you from being too spoiled…?

I would comment further, but I don’t know how far you’re into the game.

So, how are you liking it?

          • I’m liking it a lot. I beat P-33 and after the Facade wedding. I wish the intro hadn’t told me how that was going to turn out. Just got it a couple days ago, but have been doing A LOT of the side quests, so I haven’t beaten it yet, even though it appears I am now able to go to what I assume is the last maze. Hopefully, that, in itself, is just another twist.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Nice! Yeah, that’s one of the moments the intro ruins… It’s pretty irritating, now that I think about it. Most of the side-quests have pretty interesting storylines, so I think they feel rewarding (I remember the one about the dog that is searching for medicine and the lighthouse lady the most). Well, I’m not going to comment on whether or not you’re close to the ending, you’ve already been spoiled enough as it is.

I will say this though: nothing can prepare you for the 2nd playthrough, it is AMAZING. It’s really rich in terms of story. I loved it and I reckon you will too.

  • zweii

As someone not familiar with either franchise, can anybody tell me what the Dragon Quest joke was?

    • The part where everything is in 8bit and you have the big nasty monster and you have the black screen with white text on it.

That is how Dragon Quest looked when you were in a battle on the NES. When this big bad monster turns around and turns up to be a little girl the rest of the cast do a very typical thing, they come gliding on the floor.

Sorry but that is the best way I can explain it at the moment.

      • Locklear93

To be a little more specific, it’s at 1:07 in the video. Seeing Desco smiling after playing a joke like that actually made her a lot more interesting.

        • That was really cute. Had to watch that a few times. And, for Fuuka shooting up the place full of Prinnies.

      • Xeahnort

First-person dungeon crawler like Etrian Odyssey or SMT I & II had the same battle system

  • Neckbear

Is it me, or does the love interest looks pretty much like Volcano?

    • malek86

Yep, I noticed. It could be a plot point. But then, it would be a bit too obvious. Maybe NIS is just playing around, and there’s actually no relation at all.

      • glemtvapen

Maybe. But reincarnation always played a big role in Disgaea in both game and plot. Past lovers perhaps with old memories flooding back to Valba?

    • It would be cool but maybe that character that looks like a princess is a Volcano’s relative.

  • Great movie. Got me wanting the game even more than before. Now I canĀ“t wait for it to be released outside of Japan :)

  • Methylene

Whoa! Flonne has now reached the top tier of N1 characters or what?

    • Shuryou

But it’s just the Angel class… Flonne isn’t even in the video.

      • Methylene

I’m pretty sure that’s Flonne, especially since she looks exactly the same as the promo Flonne we’ve seen in some artwork.

        • What minute/seconds does she appear?

          • Methylene

            Around 1:48

Long blond hair, blue ribbon, even the heart earrings.

          • Nah, i dont think is Flonne, they wouldnt make here that big anyway (i dont think they would change her character so drastically without promoting it either)
It must be the Angel class, they surely made her close to how flonne’s clothes were, i imagine because it is like an uniform?

          • WildArms it looks exactly like Flonne and she like, Etna did in D2 might play an important role here, especially since D4 seems to involve angels.

          • ForeverFidelis

            Nah, look at neogranzon’s post

            That’ GOTTA be Flonne.

Also Laharl and Etna at the top left made me pee a little

        • glemtvapen

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s not Flonne. Could just be an Omega/Tera Star spell with Evangelion references. :PThey can’t just suddenly turn her to a High Angel after spending all those games being a fallen one.Edit: Looking at the groupshot again, there is a high chance that it IS Flonne since on her back we could see Laharl and Etna’s legs. We’ll just have to wait and see how is this so.

  • Omg, i love the opening, and omg i love disgaea’s love stories, they are always epic

If you get to choose your love interest this time around….
    I will buy TWO COPIES!

  • Chow

This one almost beats Disgaea 2 as my favorite Disgaea animation.

  • Cool intro, almost made me want to buy the game.

  • nyoron

I am pretty sure that’s Flonne guys. Those earrings, the ribbons, she looks nothing like the normal angel class as we know it. So unless Celestia is mass producing Flonne sisters for the project to surpass Level 9999 I think she’s the real deal.http://img574.imageshack.us/img574/1394/itsflonneguys.jpg

    • yeah I agree. It looks too much like her not to be her.

    • … Well, Disgaea Infinite did show that Flonne was trying to get a license to become a Trainee again– maybe she might have succeeded? Especially if we actually count Raspberyl Mode in Disgaea 3; Flonne was an Archangel in that, even if she could technically still go into her Fallen Mode.

    • Code

I’m not keen on the notion of aging Disgaea characters, I think Nippon Ichi games work better without delving into that opo; But I agree at least as of right now, all evidence to me says that is Flonne, not the Angel class.

When there is official artwork of Disgaea’s 4 Angel’s class, or Flonne released (that isn’t in SD form) we’ll know 100% for sure. But considering how Angel’s have looked in the past I wouldn’t read into that being the Angel class.

      • Maybe when she becomes a High Angel, she actually… and literally ( THIS is a disgaea game after all)… becomes high…? xD

        • Code

          lol >ww<;

          • Lol xD, and every time you are playing NIER it always make me laugh, because it doesnt just says “playing nier” in your icon, it says stuff like… “In forgotname mountain—what a beautifull view” And me like lol O.O

          • Code

            haha you mentioned that before come to think of it, it made me laugh since I had no idea it was doing stuff like that — I bet lately all it’s saying is “maintaining the garden” opo;;

          • Yeah, I didn’t know it did that either until my cousin asked why there was a level called “dreamdreamdreamdream”

    • Locklear93

I’m inclined to agree with you. I’m not sure it counts as official, but in the Disgaea 3 expansion, during the Celestia levels, Flonne is hinted at strongly as being the new archangel (Vulcanus’ replacement).

As for it being the standard angel class, I REALLY doubt it. Look at Volcano. Look at the angel class from 1, 2, and 3 (3 only after getting command mode DLC). Volcano and those angels wear very similar uniforms, and their hair in braids. Volcano just has a dangly bit tucked up into her belt. Since they kept the traditional angel design with modifications for Volcano, I’m not inclined to believe they totally redid the angel design for generic angels.

    • But the heigh, that is the point that makes me think she is not Flonne… i just cant see it you know.Laharl, etna, they are like 3k years old or something around it… and they still chibi…

But the clothes are almost the same…then, If she is flonne, it would be weird/funny when she stands next to laharl, now she is higher than laharl >8D

      • nyoron

Yeah she does look tall but I think that might be just the style of the OP animation – everyone looks taller and skinnier than usual. But we also don’t know how many years have passed since the last game so maybe she did have a growth spurt.

        • Code

This is what I’m going with, all the characters is kind of elongated in this OP. Although the novelty of tall Flonne has kind of grown on me in the last few hours >w<'

      • It would make sense because in D Infinite she was trying to regain her angel lincease

    • In the light novels, flonne has parents and sisters in celestia.

  • Loving this video so much it makes me feel so happpyyyyAlso has anyone noticed that his love interest looks like the money angel girl? Same pink hair and blue eyes, even. DO I SMELL PLOT??

  • Code

rarr, can’t wait seriously >www<; I'm cautious about the fact love story qualities are being brought up already, that's kind of what Disgaea 2 did — sure Disgaea, Disgaea 2 and even Makai Kingdom are at there roots love stories, but Disgaea and Makai Kingdom let that quality become naturally apparent within the game itself over making it focal point in the promotion of the game.

    nomnomnom fish!

  • If this has a connection to the novels of what happens after Disgaea, then that is Flonne since Lamington did say she is the next in line to rule over Celestia after he retires since she is what the essence of good and pure should be. If it has no relations, then it probably isn’t Flonne.

  • HarryHodd

High quality trailer there. Everything about this game looks and sounds so good.

  • Exkaiser

Ah, Masked Hero, always a cool guy.

  • SolidusSnake

What’s up with the prinny super sentai guy (1:30)? o.O

    • Exkaiser

That’s the Masked Hero generic class- they were introduced in Disgaea 3.

Pretty cool dudes, though apparently they’re way overpowered in that game. I suppose they’re kind of like the Kamen Riders to the Prism Rangers’ Super Sentai. Now Disgaea just needs some Ultramen. And Metal Heroes.

It seems like NIS has a pretty big soft spot for tokusatsu heroes.

  • Hmm who is the main heroine in this game? I thought it was Fuuka but she have little screen time in the op.

  • Can’t wait for this game, although I do like the intro music from Disgaea 3, the most out of the series.

  • If that’s Flonne (which I’m kind of hoping it’s not) then a LOT of time must have passed between the events in Disgaea 1 and 4. That angel seems so graceful, powerful, and serious. Doesn’t fit her at all. I am disappoint.
