NeoGeo Games Coming To PS3 And PSP With Modern Emulator Features [Update]

By Spencer . December 6, 2010 . 10:49pm

imageSNK has a lineup of NeoGeo roms for PlayStation Network. Unlike the Virtual Console re-releases NeoGeo Station titles have features most standard emulators have.

Save states, in-game instruction manuals, sound replay mode (a background music player), replays (save up to eight per game), and online play are part of the package. PlayStation 3 owners can invite a friend via the XMB bar or find a game by picking quick match or match search. Players can also create their own match and pick settings before the game starts. SNK’s NeoGeo games work on PSP too, but on the go versions only have ad-hoc support.

These games are the original releases with all of the original bugs. SNK says they want players to enjoy the original versions without any changes as they were back in the day.

Ten games are set to launch on December 22. They are:

Art of Fighting
ASO II: Last Guardian
Baseball Stars Professional
Fatal Fury
League Bowling
Magician Lord
Metal Slug
Samurai Shodown
Super Sidekicks
The King of Fighters ’94

Each NeoGeo Station release costs 900 yen ($11) for PS3 and 700 yen ($8.50) for PSP.

Update: NeoGeo station is confirmed for North America and we’re getting these games a day earlier than Japan. SNK’s service kicks off on December 21. PS3 games will cost $8.99 while PSP versions will be $6.99.

Hopefully games like MotW, Gekka no Kenshi 1 & 2, SS 2 & 4 get added, and the online isn’t as bad as the XBLA versions… not that it’s realistic to hope for. =/

With SNK’s record and Sony’s hard setup, I’d bet on it being worse…

      • http://www.themogblog.com/ Edward Walton

I’d bet on people will have crappy connections which most of PSN does.

  • godmars

Would be nice if they did Home game launching for these titles like Namco did with the game center that they failed to support. Especially if it meant virtual arcade cabinets.

So it’s finally confirmed now? Great!

  • PrinceHeir

hopefully King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match and Neo Geo Battle Colosseum will be ported as well.i also want a New King of Fighters Dream Match(same vein as 2002 Unlimited Match) but includes Ash and some of the characters from 2003 and on. include a new story(maybe do what Judgement and Dissidia did) gather all the fighters from their existing era’s by a one person.

as well as using the same Art Style as The King of Fighters XIII.that would be the best KOF game ever. imagine Ash vs Nameless in HD O_O

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

      Nameless? He’s just a shoe-in for K9999 aka Teeetsssuuuuooooo!!!! …And he wasn’t 2003 onwards.

SNK broke the cycle of the 3 installment story-arc followed by a dreammatch when they made XII. So XII is basically the dreammatch for the Ash saga. IF they ever make KoF XIV, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t a new storyline.

      • PrinceHeir

eh different preference and all. i still prefer Nameless than K999 just becuase his theme is badass not to mention this pic is just pure winhttp://images3.wikia.nocookie….hopefully XIII becomes successful so that we can have another Dream Match with XIII visuals :)

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

That’s a cool picture. Hiroaki is a pretty stylish artist, though I prefer Nona.

Heck, I hope to God XIII is successful so we’d have another one. I don’t know about Dream Match though. I like having a lot of characters, but I also like a storyline with the wacky endings, and 2 or 3 new characters. We’ll see.

          • PrinceHeir

            awesome ^^

do you think Ash or Saki will return in the next game? since XIII is basically the end of the “Ash” saga. aww man i want to use Saiki too ^^

            here is he’s other works

            http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080830232950/snk/images/thumb/a/ae/Kof2001_promo.jpg/627px-Kof2001_promo.jpg

do you know who made the XIII artwork? it looks oldschool with more vibrant feeling.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

If the next game is a dream match, which means no story, Ash or Saiki is possible. Otherwise… I don’t know if you’ve seen KoF XIII’s endings yet, but let me just say Ash returning in the story is highly unlikely.

Ogura did the artwork for XIII, as well as XII. I like him too, next to Nona, whom Ogura has taken after.

Neo Geo Battle Coloseum was (ironically) for the Atomiswave hardware, soooo.. Yeah. Don’t count on it.

      • PrinceHeir

and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum was actually ported for the PS2 so don’t count out on it yet.

Please release Blazing Star. Its all I want.

  • z_merquise

When I first read the headline, I got excited and expecting Garou: Mark of the Wolves for PSN. But after reading the article and the list of games, not so much anymore.

C’mon, they already released most of these games in their numerous compilations. Why not something that wasn’t released in their compilations before like Garou, Last Blade series, Samurai Shodown 5 Special, Pulstar, Blazing Star and the list goes on. Though it was nice of them to release these games for the PS3 and PSP but I’m just hoping that SNK would listen and give something they haven’t gave to their fans before.

    • capristrider

Yes! Garou and the Last Blade series which are awesome looking.IMHO Pulstar has some of the finest 2D pixel art graphics from the NeoGeo era, memerzing.

      • http://waxingerratic.tumblr.com/ ECM

Pedant alert: Pulstar is more like some of the finest *pre-rendered* graphics of the era–nobody was in there pushing pixels in the ‘pixel art’ sense, beyond touch-ups.

        • capristrider

ok mate, sorry, but still Pulstar bloody lovely looking regardless if it is pre-rended pixels, they are still art to me and still pixels to me.

          • http://waxingerratic.tumblr.com/ ECM

Yeah, I know: like I said, I was being a pedant XD

          • capristrider

oh yeah pedant XD lol, no worries, it’s sequel Blazing Star is pretty looking too.

          • http://waxingerratic.tumblr.com/ ECM

I actually prefer Blazing Star, though it’s dreadfully easy. (It’s not remotely as ‘strategic’ as Pulstar.)

“SNK says they want players to enjoy the original versions without any changes as they were back in the day.”

You mean they’ll stop disabling Mai’s bouncy animation?

  • cmurph666

    Finally.

  • NeoTechni

pretty sad that some third party is makine better emulators than sony

how about bringing some of those to psps and ps3s ps1 emulator?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Wait until you actually play them before you say anything from modern SNK is good. From what I’ve heard of the XBLA versions of their later games, they didn’t even translate all of the text in the games.

  • xxx128

buy an aes already. Its more fun than the current “trend consoles” anyway.

  • thebanditking

Now if we could only get those PC Engine titles that Japan got (Alien Crush please) my PS3 would be all set.

  • Chow

Wait, this isn’t the same as Japan’s Game Archives for NeoGeo? If I read that correctly, Japan’s also getting this, but after North America? PS3 and PSP versions are separate? I thought this was already in Japan and they worked almost like the PSX games in the Game Archive.

…unless I’m simply thinking of the PC-Engine Game Archives in Japan and incorrectly transposing all I know about the emulated PC-Engine games toward the NeoGeo side. I’m too lazy to check right now.

Hopefully this continously gets updated, unlike Virtual Console’s library for Neo-Geo games. I at least want Real Bout sometime!

  • AaqibRawat

im hoping if these titles are successfull they will release more snk games with good online play..

but reading comments left below does the ps3 not have good online play on 2d fighters ? i might splash out on a ps3 if it does.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Online play on PS3 fighting games is fine as long as you’re playing with a wired connection and not on Wi-Fi. I play online all the time in SSFIV and BlazBlue, and the only time there’s ever a problem is if someone’s using Wi-Fi.

  • TyeTheCzar

After feeling so much pain playing Magician Lord in the Wii Neo Geo collection, I wonder if Save States would make the game much more fun? You see, the enemy placement was so cheap that you couldn’t go two screens without a thousand enemies ganging up on you.

  • Guest

Wake me up when we start getting games that haven’t been ported already like a dozen of times.

  • Guest

OK this is a start (finally WTF??) But WHERE is my King of Fighters 2002 Ultimate Match???
