The Final Trailer For The 3rd Birthday

By Spencer . December 15, 2010 . 3:22am

Next week, The 3rd Birthday makes its debut in stores and on PSN, which means Square Enix won’t be releasing anymore trailers. Well, at least in Japan. This movie is a mix of story scenes and Twisted shooting action.

The best way to play The 3rd Birthday, according to director Hajime Tabata, is not on a PSP. Tabata recommends using the data install feature and connecting a PSP to your TV. You’ll need 214MB of free space to install The 3rd Birthday.

Should’ve made it for the PS3 if he wanted it on the TV. Telling people to play it on the TV through the PSP is kind of silly.

    • Aoshi00

Tell me about it, just like Peach Walker, how I wish it were on the PS3,
connecting the Dualshock 3 to PSP Go via the PS3 every time is cumbersome. Plus still no 2nd analog anyway.. but the controller still feels better.

      • RupanIII

I tried to pick up Peace Walker again recently, the controls are so damn annoying. Even if it wasn’t on PS3 just making a set camera ala classic MGS would’ve make it so much more enjoyable. Forcing you to control the camera yourself in an action game is something I just don’t get. I mean you wouldn’t have a shmup where you have to reach your pinky or something to make sure the camera stays on you while simultaneously controlling the ship and shooting.

        • Aoshi00

yea, the lack of 2nd analog stick just blows it for me, especially w/ frantic action and constantly needing to adjust the camera (you could tap the right shoulder btn but still wouldn’t give you a good view), all the while the items are accessed from the menu real time w/o pause. I tried playing w/ the dualshock 3 via the PSP Go and I kept trying to use the 2nd analog stick to turn the camera, it’s just second nature, and unfortunately the game doesn’t support it (unless you do custom firmware or something which I don’t know how to do and don’t want to). But here they asked you to give up either the directional or face btns w/ either control scheme.. So they built the control around the game instead of making the game work w/ the system.. I keep wondering if the 3rd birthday would play as annoying as Peace Walker. If so, even a shower scene couldn’t get me to buy this game :(…

          • RupanIII

Oh yea, the real time menu, it’s like hey let’s just compound the bad ideas! Like you said, it’s like the controls were just an afterthought or something, not integrated/harmonious with the system from the ground up. The tactical-stealth-espionage has really gone out of MGS imo too, it’s more like action-shooter now. I feel like since MGS2 Kojima has been forced along somewhat by Konami wanting more monies, more mainstream plot/controls, by fan demand, etc. He said he wanted it to end at 2. 3 I like but not as much as the first two, and 4 he didn’t even want to be involved with, but then started getting death threats ala Anno with Eva. He must have really conflicted feelings about the series now, and in that respect I can see why the last few games have felt a bit disappointing and unlike the glory days of the series.

I’m gonna have to hold off on 3rd Birthday too until I see how the controls work. If they’re really bad we can always watch the shower scene on YouTube lol

          • Aoshi00

Good idea, watching the shower scene on youtube at our lesiure w/ no frustration and hands free lol :) nah, kidding, as much as I want to see the game’s story, if the control is like PW, I know i can’t go thru w/ it, plus I’m not even a fan of Parasite Eve. I like all 4 MGSs okay, 1 & 3 the most, 2 had that crazy ending. Death threats, really? I hope they would give the story a rest too instead of making more shooters, I’m interested in Rising though because I like Raiden. I didn’t know Anno rec’d death threats either, that guy seemed so self righteous and pretty destructive himself, but I thanked him for giving us EVA and can’t wait for the other two new movies.

Yea, for PW, the control was not optimal to begin w/, at least give us a chance to pause when switch weapons or choosing items.. For MGS3 3DS, I guess it would be better if they go back to static camera.

          • RupanIII

Hahah ‘hands free’ Yep Anno received threats, actually have you seen End of Eva? Um,

-MINOR SPOILER- towards the end he edited in the actual letters. I can see how he might come off like that, but I always thought it was great how he follows his vision through even in the face of threats

Here’s a link about the Kojima threats

I like Raiden too but I’m not sure about Rising yet, I wonder how the story/approach will be without Kojima. It won’t really feel like an MGS game if you can just run around literally slashing ppl in two, MGS was always about avoiding conflict and not glorifying just random violence. So I’ll have to wait and see more first

          • Aoshi00

yea, Anno and Miyamu were getting too weird at that time, Anno w/ his depression and all.. I still like Ogata Megumi/Shinji the most, she’s an awesome VA.

Lol, look at Kojima’s face.. that’s hardcore.. so THAT’s why he was working so hard doing play test and debugging the game, I thought putting his life on the line was not literal :)

      • NeoTechni

“connecting the Dualshock 3 to PSP Go via the PS3 every time is cumbersome”

You only have to do it once.

        • Aoshi00

Nope you have to do it every time. Unless you have a separate dualshock 3 you don’t use for your PS3. Otherwise once you use the USB to connect to the PS3 again, it only sees it as a PS3 controller instead of the PSP Go controller.

          • NeoTechni

“Unless you have a separate dualshock 3 you don’t use for your PS3.”

          • Aoshi00

I do have two dualshock 3s, one from the Phat and the other from the Slim, but the old one is creaky after a drop, so I don’t feel like using that and can’t give a dedicated DS3 to the PSP Go, so… it sucks you can’t reestablish the link btwn the Go and the DS3 later unless you go thru the PS3 again.. w/ 2 USB cables, very cumbersome.

      • Huh. I don’t remember the part where Snake walks Peach.

    • Agreed.

It’s not like much will change anyway, you just see everything bigger.

Side note~ Loved the first 20 seconds

    • goronyan

I was thinking about the same thing. (◇)

    • RupanIII

Totally. That’s really not a very encouraging statement for him to make lol

    • Testsubject909

If it was on the PS3. I’d pay 100$ for it…

It’s Parasite Eve. It’s one of those gems from the Playstation era that was overlooked by far too many gamers at the time, a game I feel did much more for the JRPGs of it’s time then other far more popular games like FF7.

All the cosmetic news aside, the gameplay for this one seems solid as well with some interesting innovations and customisation… Ah, I still remember farming junk items just to get one of the ultimate guns…

  • Aoshi00

Oh no, Ayanami Rei *.*… who’s Aya’s seiyuu anyway?

I knew the best way to play would be on the TV (shooter is just too cramped on a handheld for me) and it’s nice the digital d/l is ~1100 yen less than a physical copy (guess that’s how much the costume is worth), but getting the digital copy on Jpn PSN is still more expensive than importing a retail copy.. Still no 2nd analog stick control scheme even w/ PSPGo’s Dualshock 3 right, so much run and gunning…

    • karasuKumo

The funny thing is she’s voiced by Maaya Sakamoto who has Aya in her name and Eve is voiced by Rei Okamoto who obviously has Rei in her name XD Spooky haha

I agree shooters don’t feel right on handhelds, King Kong on the DS was hand crampingly bad XD. If there’s going to be a PSP2 the things I really want it to have are good sized dual analogues, flash/youtube support online and a decent PSN app store for games from Apple’s app store to be ported to. ILLUSIA, Zenonia 1 & 2 and a few other games would be amazing if they had button controls.

      • Aoshi00

I see, so she’s Lightning again eh.. I think she’s a bit overused in S-E games, Aerith, Lightning, and now Aya :(.. I like her, but sometimes it could be too much..

    • NeoTechni

Ayanami Rei was voiced by Megumi Hayashibara. We could only be so lucky to have her do PEve.

      • Aoshi00

No, I just meant the overused “Who am I?” line at the beginning of the trailer. Thank god she’s not voiced by Hayashibara Megumi, not much a fan of hers, and she’s kind of out of the voice acting scene too. Sakamoto Maaya is overused (Aerith, Lightnining, now Aya) as well as the recent S-E heroines.

        • NeoTechni

I’m a huge fan of hers.

          • Aoshi00

I liked her as girl Ranma the most (Ayanami is okay), other than that I don’t care much for her since I didn’t watch Slayers and such, her songs are alright I guess, but I never liked her too much..

          • RupanIII

Me too, her and Maaya Sakamoto :D When I first started watching anime in Japanese their voices and music were in a lot of the stuff I watched, and I’ve enjoyed their work since

  • skyblaze

I wouldn’t mind connecting my PSP to a TV… (tried it with Prinny 2 and Birth by Sleep) but that horrendous black border due to lack of proper full screen just kills it for me -__-‘

    • Aoshi00

That too, the border’s very annoying.. makes the screen so small you still can’t sit farther back.. I know there’s that $80 hub you can buy, but Sony should do something about it themselves instead of 3rd party..

  • karasuKumo

Looks great, the CGI is gorgeous :D I can’t wait for an English release :)

I’d love to see 2:45 with her wearing Lightnings Costume XD

  • ShinGundam

Parry with shooting mechanics 0:26 ? OK

  • d19xx

“The best way to play The 3rd Birthday, according to director Hajime Tabata, is not on a PSP.”

Uh no. I got a small tv in my room and I don’t dig the damn black boarder.

    • doomspeller10

At least those who have CFW will be able to connect it to a PC and get a real (albeit pixelated) fullscreen.

  • Connecting to a tv? I tried it for some games and its looks a bit murky :( (Persona 3, and Yugioh 5D’s Tag Force 5). Does he just want us to do it for the cutscenes or will battle scenes still carry some great level of detail that isnt lost in the movement to the television set?

  • Well the J-pop that started playing near the end kind of made it less epic. But it’s still an awesome trailer and I can’t wait for this game :D Also…the beginning reminded me of Kill Bill lol.

  • The classic music on the first part of the video sends chills along my spine. And it feels good. Very good. =w=

    • doomspeller10

Agreed. Though the other (extremely emotive) song on the 2nd part feels awkward, but not as awkward as that happy song that played on the third impact in the end of evangelion. I’m guessing that song will appear at the end of the game, like with most late Squeenix games.

  • wow… I can foresee its epicness and will get overall rating of around 8 or above… The story looks juicy and so is the gameplay…. And I think SE did not let their fans down on Parasite Evil…If its on PS3 it will sell better, but, i dun mind with the psp release..

Can’t help thinking If only FFXIII was as good…Not to say its bad.. but there so much more to offer.. Anyway, we shall see next year at their FFXIII Fabula series conference… Hope they live up with the expectation..

Oh, and also, the j-pop theme song is really nice.. But, i sort of feel its familiar… Have I heard similar song somewhere is SE game before? Hmm…

    • ChaosPaladinFayt

LOL parasite evil?! It’s like parasite eve meets resident evil o. o

      • seriously speaking…. i find your comment very annoying… and it sound like some children making a big deal over a little mistake.. but anyway, i correct it.. its parasite eve…

        • ChaosPaladinFayt

relax <.< it was supposed to be a joke. I think ur the one who's taking things a bit too seriously.

    • I respectfully and whole heartedly disagree. The pretty much destroyed everything that was good on the game. And then what do they do? Make it a third person shooter, ON A PLATFORM WITH ONLY A SINGLE STICK. Sometimes the level of stupidity people/companies/groups exhibit knows no bounds.

      • hmmm.. but i think “they” are not stupid.. People make their decision base on a reason… Of course you are the consumer, you can say whatever you think is right or whatever you like. However, I would still kindly ask you to maybe be a bit more tactful when you do not know what is really going on with those “people” .. so you can sound abit more wiser…

As for control.. that is your preference, so i have no comment.. but i personally see no problem to it..single or dual.. as long as the experience they give is great then its good.. do we not remember the 90s? one button control is still so fun.. by the way,we already have many tps on consoles with dual analogue stick gamepad…

      • Testsubject909

Look at it this way. Parasite Eve isn’t one of those mega blockbuster sellers. At it’s time it was a daring change for JRPGs whose battle system is reminiscent of the Vagrant Story game, which also wasn’t all that succesful. I don’t know that many gamers who know the latter, a bit more for PE, but even then.

That said, Parasite Eve being so unsure of being a success is probably going to be shoved into a smaller budget, and a smaller budget means it can’t go on the PS3. So, it gets shoved into the PSP.

If I’m not incorrect, there are ways to allow you the usage of two analogs on the PSP, but it’s a bit of a pricey add-on, and then there’s the suggestion to play this on our TV, which is another price tag to consider. Then the cord’s too short, so you have to buy extensions. If you want to play optimally…

Honestly. I would’ve loved to see this on the PS3. Even just as a PSN downloadable game, smaller budget but without having to rely on publishing it on a physical format to save up the money to upscale the graphics to be decent on the PS3.

But then again, when you know the origins of Parasite Eve 3, which is to say, it was a cellphone game… I consider myself lucky to have it coming on the PSP to begin with. It’s far less of a hassle then playing it on a phone for one thing, and for another, it means we stand an actual chance at playing this thing.

Plus, think back on Parasite Eve for a moment. Remember the big, big changes between Parasite Eve 1 and 2?

PE1 was an active turn based JRPG with a range radius system, whereas PE2 was an action JRPG game reminiscent of the playstyle of Resident Evil. This time it’s another action JRPG game, utilizing cover based third person shooting, again, not too far from Resident Evil nowadays and other hit games.

I don’t see it as destroying anything. More of, evolving. One can argue PE2 destroyed what was fun of PE1, just as we can argue the same for PE3 doing it to PE2/1. But since we weren’t shown any stable form of gameplay, we can assume it’s not a constant and thus, not exactly something to add to the equation here as to what makes a PE game. Even if we did, it’s following a clear path and evolution that makes it that I can understand why they chose a third person shooter style.

      • Aiddon

it’s by Toriyama and Tabeta, two of Square’s most mediocre people by far. God this company has fallen hard

      • skymap

This is Parasite Eve; it’s a lock on system.

  • ChaosPaladinFayt

Nice ass in those jeans. Ill help u remember who u are ^,,^~ you sexy thang xD

  • NoElixirs

Classic PE theme sounds so eerie and great!

  • Raven_Shinobi

Wow, the people at SE seem to have a thing for Sakamoto; first Aerith/Aeris, then Lightning, and now Aya. I hope she won’t come to mind when they discuss who should be voicing Stella, because it’s getting a little repetitive.

I’ve been apathetic towards SE’s releases in the last few years, but I loved the PE games on the PSX and Tabata seems to be pouring his soul into this game (or at least, that’s the impression that I got from the trailers and interviews). I hope it will turn out to be a fun game with decent storytelling.

  • I Am So Happy That I Know Japanese To Know What She Is Saying. I Am Going To Buy This Game 2 Times One In English And One In Japanese. OMG This Games Is Going To Be So Sexy. But There Should Have Make It One PS3. Why Do I Have To Play It Through The PSP To See In On My Tv. If You Want That Then Just Make It On PS3.

    • eh capitalizing every first letter?

      • Is The New Thing.

        • Testsubject909

It Makes You Kewl! Just Like Using Different Letters…. (You Kursed Seeds! Sorry, Sorry, Just Had To Reference That Bad Game.)

  • thebanditking

“and connecting a PSP to your TV.” Easy for him to say the dev kit PSP’s can upscale to full screen, the retail systems can’t and the wire for the TV output is not very long either, especially since you should plug it into the wall to keep the battery from dying. Oh well, I am really looking forward to this game, when its released in english of course.

  • Aiddon

and once again it’s readily apparent that Tabeta and Toriyama have no clue what they’re doing as they have no respect for the original subject matter

    • NeoTechni

How do you unlike a comment?

  • Testsubject909

Oh… oh it feels good. Those first two minutes and six seconds felt so good to my ears.

Oh how I’ve missed you so Parasite Eve, and how glad I am to see you’ve come back to us. Now, on the other hand, I’m not too sure about that Superfly song… Even less so about the title… I mean, seriously? Superfly?

    • Superfly is the artist.. the song is called Eyes on Me.

  • NeoTechni

I want whatever upscaler they used. Perhaps make on for PS3?

  • tubers

    @ 1:31 of trailer..

“Leonard and Penny!” – Big Bang Theory

    Is Aya Brea really dead?

Is Kyle behind the Twisted and time loops trying to bring back Aya?

Or are they recreating the Parasite Eve Manhattan Event.. This time.. Eve Brea as the catalyst not Eve (parasite Eve) – Mister Zurkon

IMO, this looks like a “flagship class” PSP game :D

  • cj_iwakura

    Yoko Shinomura >>>> J Pop

  • PrinceHeir

they are already discussing plans for a sequel not to mention on a HD console(PS3)

so please buy this game :D

the trailer looks epic, can’t wait to get my hands on it ^^

  • I’d gladly play it on my TV… if Sony would get with the times and offer an option to fullscreen it. I hate handheld gaming, I’d much prefer TV gaming.. but this is a matter of “choose your poison”, and I choose the PSP over a 4-way letterbox.

  • The thing I don’t get is how this is a reboot, yet it continues the story of 1 & 2…

    • tubers

New enemy, new mechanics, new game play. Probably a good move too as not to completely tarnish the “Parasite Eve” title for the fans who dearly loved the first.

  • I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve barely played the first game. It’s on my “retro-games that I need to finally finish list”. The second game in the series is best described, really as a survival horror RPG. An Rpg that takes a LOT from the Resident Evil Series. The odd mix of gameplay worked out beautifully.

Im stoked about the 3rd birthday, even if it is on the PSP. Im biting my nails though. SE hasn’t been that kind to the FF series after FFX. I’m also a little too nostalgic for pre-rendered backgrounds. They’re a little obsolete technically speaking, seeing as 2d-backgrounds were use because 3d gaming in consoles was just getting off the ground at the time, and the ambitious consoles that ran them (PS1, N64, Saturn) were really too weak to display fully 3d graphics in a way that doesn’t damage your vision. They aren’t using pre-rendered 2d backgrounds in games any more because they simply don’t need to, which I think is a shame.

I like variety in my games. I don’t want every game I play to be an FPS or a behind-the back 3rd-person shooter. I miss the top-down camera angles of the FIRST MGS (or the third MG, if you will) and I miss pre-rendered backgrounds. It’s sad that the artistic beauty of the backgrounds and the personality contained within some of the camera angles is a lost art-form.

I shouldn’t be bitching too much. We got another game with Aya Brea in it, and it’s been looong overdue.
