Doctor Lautrec And The Forgotten Knights Has A Touch Of Professor Layton

By Spencer . December 17, 2010 . 12:03am

Konami’s "treasure adventure" game has a flattering formula. Doctor Jean-Pierre Lautrec, the game’s star character, kind of looks like Professor Layton with his towering top hat. He also has a young assistant, Miss Sophie Coubertin, who is a student at the University of Paris.

That’s right Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights is set in Paris, 19th century Paris. The two met while Sophie interned at the Museum of Natural History where Dr. Lautrec works. People look up to him as a genius and (surprise!) he loves solving mysteries. Actually, that’s all he loves. Lautrec isn’t concerned with right or wrong, just solving puzzles and excavating treasures.

While the characters sound like they stepped out of a Level-5 game, Konami’s game looks like it has a different style of play. You can directly control the Doctor and explore areas. There’s also some kind of fighting component, which hasn’t been revealed. Screenshots make it look somewhat RPG-ish with HP and attack stats.

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights is on track for a spring release in Japan.

It looks like it could be fun, but isn’t this the second game of their’s that looks a lot like a Layton title…?

  • Exkaiser

So it’s like a cross between Indiana Jones and Layton? Mite b cool.

      You have my attention, Konami.

But he’s no English gentleman :) Looks kinda like a villain w/ his monkey..

Hehe, nice. I’m sure Layton would say the same.
Someone posed their revoltech to have a series of reactions to Prof Layton vs Ace Attorney, I think the first two reactions would go with this as well.

Wow, dude, this looks like it will be awesome. I love the rpg exploratory element

  • PrinceHeir

even the title has some similarities.

will keep an eye on this though.

This seems like such a shameless ripoff of Layton. Not interested. Konami, let me know when you can think of your own ideas. -_-

Even though it’s sort of a Professor Layton clone, it still looks interesting. Will reserve judgement when more details about the gameplay and story are revealed.

My thoughts exactly. I’ve never been one to dismiss a title outright because it’s heavily inspired by another. Sometimes the “ripoff” is even better than the original. (Like Konami’s ripoff Magician’s Quest was much more enjoyable than Animal Crossing, in my opinion).

Doctor Lautrec has a (kinda like) top hat (which I requested back in this post http://bit.ly/fTgVgD) and a spiffy moustache – a combination which gives him the power known as “badass” – so this game is already decent. And it has RPG-ness, which makes me interested.

As long as the “mysertious” aren’t obnoxious puzzles like the one in the Professor Layton series, I see nothing wrong with this game :D Come on Doctor Lautrec (Ph.D in badassary), lets steal some treasure while boffing coppers on the head :D

I am interested to see how this comes out. The fact that it looks like a Layton ripoff is disconcerting, but if it has original gameplay, it might be good.
