If The 3rd Birthday Is Popular We’ll Make "The 4th"

By Spencer . December 23, 2010 . 12:33pm

imageDirector Hajime Tabata reflected about the development of The 3rd Birthday in a creator’s blog post. Three years after the original announcement and eleven years after Parasite Eve 2, The 3rd Birthday is finally out in Japan. Tabata thanked fans for waiting so long for the game.

When the project started Tetsuya Nomura gave him three keywords: Aya Brea, Overdive, and Twisted. Yoshinori Kitase, producer, gave Tabata a development team and said, "make a game connected to the next title." With those directions, Tabata aimed at creating the best gun shooting game for PSP. Everyone on the development team exhausted all of their energy making the game. He hopes ten years later people will still have memories of The 3rd Birthday.

Tabata closed by saying, "If the 3rd [Birthday] rises to popularity we’ll make the 4th."

“If the 3rd [Birthday] rises to popularity we’ll make the 4th.”

    Wow…ain’t that surprising!

    *End Sarcasm*

In all seriousness, I have looking forward to this game since they decided to not make it just a cell phone game. I hope it is legitimately challenging and not mostly cheap.

  • neon6

Maybe it’s best you make sure the first game is good before you think about milking the franchise. It’s not like you guys are EA/Activision in which case you do yearly releases regardless of the outcome.

  • evilmoogle

Im sure it will be populair.

So, will we have a “birthday” every year?

    • PrinceHeir

      yes please :D

  • Guest

I just got it yesterday and I can’t put it down.
Without a doubt, the best shooter on the PSP.
Controls work very well, with different options to suit your play style. The graphics and sound are splendid and levels are broken up so that the game is easy to just pick up and play where you left off.

    Mission accomplished, gentlemen.

    • Nyohoho Nub. You gonna get the US Version >.>

    • d19xx

Wow really. From the hate the game is getting here, I thought the graphics, gameplay and control will become crap because of the shower scene…

    • RupanIII

You know, I didn’t play the first two (I will if they ever get them on PSN..) so I’ve just been mildly interested in this so far, but I watched some YouTube videos and the gameplay looks pretty good actually. How is the camera? In the videos I watched it seemed pretty stable/intelligent. One of my primary complaints with Peace Walker was the camera system (I don’t like controlling it myself, it inevitably ends up all spastic)

      • Guest

The camera’s hardly a problem. Thanks to the lock on system you can’t really “miss” your target and there’s an option to zoom in really close to Aya (behind view) if you’d like. Of course L is still there to re adjust the camera or whatever.

  • Aiddon

no thank you Kitase, you have no respect for the franchise as shown by the game’s stupid ending and stupid storyline I just read online. Toriyama is the worst writer at Square, Nomura should be ashamed of himself for letting this happen, and you’ve been out of talent for nearly a decade now.

    • Guest

First off why would you spoil yourself by reading a game’s ending online unless you never planned on playing it anyway, which would then puzzle me to as why would you post something like that here which is only a negative to people here who are anticipating the game?

      • Aiddon

I do it all the time. I do it for a lot of the games I play, even story-based ones. And secondly “don’t post negative stuff”? If I find something objectionable I don’t why I shouldn’t post my grievances.

    • Couldn’t possibly be any stupider than the originals, and it already has better gameplay so…

      • Aiddon

no, it’s FAR dumber than the maturely written predecessors. These are FFX-2 levels of stupidity we’re talking about here. There are QUANTUM levels of idiocy here.

        • NoElixirs

        • PrinceHeir

wow just wow, FFX-2 bad? GTFO.

it was actually a awesome game, the battle system should have been used in XIII since you pretty much control every party member, not to mention the side stories and mini quest are icing in the cake, it was also the first FF game to have a New Game+(as far as remembered) you can go pretty much anywhere in spira, i just don’t get why people hate it? is it because of the theme?(more light hearted?) fanservice? idk i guess people don’t like this girly stuff. it was a mixed reception but the content is there.

FFX-2 and FFXII is actually one of the last great games by square, kingdom hearts, the world ends with you are good games but they can’t hold a candle against them(ironically sakaguchi’s last game is FFX-2 or Tactics on GBA?)

The 3rd Birthday looks promising, and i am willing to give square a chance to prove they can still make good-great games. the amount of hate against square is just unbelievable. they’re not the only one’s that lost their great developers. capcom(clover studio), konami(team silent) and sega(shenmue team and sonic team? but the shenmue team migrated to yakuza which is all good).

square is a good developer do they still have the awesomeness last gen? no but they’re still kicking alive and well. they may made bad decisions this gen(FFXIV prime example) but i think there are still some good developers in the company. is just that wada is such a idiot and he’s derailing the company on it’s knees.

give this a chance, remember they made one of the best JRPG’s in the SNES and PSX era.

          • Aiddon

I HAVE given them chances to turn themselves around, and they’ve squandered those chances time and time again. I’m NOT going to give them the benefit of the doubt just out of the goodness of my heart. I’ve read the plot of T3B and it is TERRIBLE, I can describe it any other way. It’s not good and for a game that’s OBVIOUSLY about story that’s a crippling blow. I haven’t trusted Square since they messed up FFXII and they have done NOTHING to regain that trust.

          • PrinceHeir

i can see that. i too feel your pain. do you even know what is like to go from a company that made xenogears, FF 1-8, Chrono Series, Saga Series, Parasite Eve Series and Vagrant Story, Front Mission. to games like FFXIV?

i understand that square has been making some bad decisions, i still wish sakaguchi and umetesa are still there. yup this is the problem with square today. each decision they make always and i mean ALWAYS ends up doing something wrong. they have good ideas but the execution is very flawed not to mention it is lacking in the fun department.

oh well i’ll judge it when i play the game. i still like the series due to Aya :)
fanservice or not she’s still a vital to the series. kinda like Samus in Metroid(but that’s another story)

  • RagnaXBL

hey they said the same thing with dissidia and look, now we have a sequel
really hope we get a 4th

  • karasuKumo

We’ll be the judge of that ;). I hope this game is good, it looks a little repetitive but generally it looks alright.

  • SolidusSnake

I also hope it’s good enough to be worth remembering 10 years from now when we’re wandering in a post-apocalyptic hell with nothing but our trusty shotgun and / or head asploding martial arts skillz to fend off the mutants with.

  • Testsubject909

“If this semi-niche product ends up selling well, the bosses up above will be wanting us to make more to save their asses from their plummeting profit.”

  • Guest

Well ten years later I still have memories of Parasite Eve 1 & 2 so where are they on PSN like you promised?

  • And if Parasite Eve 1 and 2 were to sell not just well, but better than this, could we have another one of those instead?

    • Aiddon

amen to that train of thought

    • PrinceHeir

how can you say PE 1 and 2 is better than this?

oh well will just have to wait till this game comes out.

oh and please square release the Parasite Eve Archives in the west so that we can compare how the series is doing so far.

  • Exkaiser

“Tabata aimed at creating the best gun shooting game for PSP.”

But I’m already playing Peace Walker…

But in all seriousness, I’m sure the actual game will be pretty good. At least the shooting-things part.

  • You hear that guys, if the 3rd Birthday is popular, you’ll get another shower scene :D

We’ll see how the 3rd Birthday is. But if it is good, then I would like a 4th very much. Oh and Square Enix…Add PE and PE 2 as a bonus if you do get to making the 4th one would ya, thanks ;)

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

So much animosity in here against Square… But when audience expectations of a brand run so long and deep, anything less than flawless is unacceptable. I carry that bias towards them too, and can’t help but be disappointed.

Yet, how can Square prove anything when they no longer consist of the staff from their glory days and will probably never reach those breathless heights again? Perhaps its time they stop rummaging through the established legacies their forefathers, cease their aimless appeasement of western standards, and embrace a brand new identity of their own. Is The World Ends With You a glimpse, or merely an accident?

If it is indeed the former, what a brave new world that would be.

    • Aiddon

even I’ll admit that the PE games were quite flawed, but T3B really shows why Toriyama shouldn’t be allowed to write.

And yes, I would rather they stop reviving series the current gen doesn’t really get and try their own stuff. It sounds more like these guys rely on someone else’s established name then their own, which implies a lack of confidence.

  • Barrit

I read way too many game sites, so it’s hard to keep them all straight sometimes. It may not have been on this site, but didn’t he say if it is popular enough, they will make a 4th game, but next time it will be on the PS3, since it is the “ideal platform for a shooter” as they put it.

That’s something to look forward to if this game turns out to be good.

  • gatotsu911

Wow. What a development philosophy. So this is how SquEnix craps out mediocrity these days.

  • please make 4th too im playing it now and i love the game even if i dont know what they say =3

  • NoElixirs

Said it once and I’ll reiterate:
    Nomura, Finish Versus XIII.
    Tabata, Finish Agito XIII.

    • PrinceHeir

don’t worry, tabat can finish his own game nomura on the other hand not sure when is versus XIII coming out.

  • d19xx

People already hate it because of the shower scene…

  • BadenBadenPrinny

and this is why I hope Square goes Bankrupt

    • With multiple manga magazines, remixed music soundtracks, fiercely loyal fans, and crazy people who spend 50 dollars every 2 weeks on Knights of the Crystal, I doubt that’ll happen any time soon.

      • BadenBadenPrinny

Indded. Tis’ nothing more than a pipe dream

    • Aiddon

I don’t think I want THAT. I just hope Toriyama and Kitase stop writing and directing as they’re over the hill.

  • PrinceHeir

i cannot wait for Parasite Eve 4 for PS3 :)

only Dissidia, Monster Hunter and God Eater are the one’s im waiting for a console game :)

    • Hexen

      yeah. imagine, HD Shower Scene!

  • Tokyo Guy

I have to agree with the comments made about the game’s story…it’s a shame that it couldn’t balance with the game because the actual gameplay is like an evolved form of Parasite Eve 2’s.
