English Training + Street Fighter = English Fighter

By Spencer . December 31, 2010 . 11:34am

imageKorean developer My Pixel has a twist on English learning edutainment. Their PC game English Fighter blends Street Fighter and Typing of the Dead mechanics. Instead of QCF + punch, players attack by typing phrases like "livingroom."

The cast of characters is quite interesting too. There’s a ninja-like girl, boxer, one-eyed robot, and a seemingly ordinary guy named Chris.

Or learn some Engrish from the Blazblue announcer DLC packs :)

I would pay $5 for this one :)

Then you run the risk of calling anyone named Carl “Karuru.”

        • Aoshi00

I did watch the youtube videos before getting the 3 voice DLCs, would’ve been nicer if the seiyuu were in char (Taokaka, Jin, & Carl).. but I’m only choosing the Jpn ver instead of the Engrish ver which was quite weird..

          • Code

Blazblue’s one of the few games where I feel the English voice acting is actually much better then the Japanese voice acting personally xpx; The lack of english in character Tao-announcer is a loss to all T_T’

          • Aoshi00

yea, when they say 2 ver. for each voice DLC one would assume it’s the Jpn and Eng VA, but it’s the Jpn VA doing both Eng(rish) and Jpn.. so I’m just sticking w/ the one where they say the English words in Jpn, instead of attempting to pronounce English like Americans.. Even though they sound funny, I don’t blame the Jpn VAs, they’re not fluent in Eng. after all.. I mean Eng actors wouldn’t be able to read or pronounce Japanese correctly either.. It’s just too bad when they do the announcer voices, they’re not the voices of the characters they’re playing (like Saitou Chiwa should be doing the crazy Tao voice or Sawashiro “Catherine” Miyuki should be doing the boy voice as Carl), instead it’s just the seiyuu’s regular voices, what’s the point? (other than a bit more variety.. and I’m a fan of seiyuu…)I do like the Eng voices as well, like Tager/Nier :) Not to mention it wouldn’t be as fun and meaningful if one doesn’t understand the soundbites of course.

I was quite surprised when I switched back to English voices after my first runthrough of the game and noticed that a lot of the characters had custom dialogues between each other while using moves during the fight.

            @ Aoshi

Gotta say that’s a little disappointing from Miyuki Sawashiro as she has dabbled a bit with English dubs and songs. But I guess in defense, Nyu is Nyu in any language.

          • I second that!!! I want Tao’s voice, nya!~ <3

As a fan of Chiaki Takahashi, I am disappointed that her voice isn't available as an optional announcer

          • Aoshi00

She is hot, maybe there would be more DLC voices coming? Still, it’s too bad the seiyuu aren’t doing the char voices.. kinda defeat the purpose I thought..

        • Code

haha, god I laugh at that every time, most bizarre pronunciation ever.

          • Well, his name is spelled カルル, so it’s not surprising :P There’s only so much katakana could do

    I want to use Barlog!

I remember trying to play the Saint Seiya typing game but all the words were in Japanese (typed out phonetically in English) so they were long as hell and it eventually would get impossible lol

  • PrinceHeir

hey i love the JP voices doing english in Blazblue :)

  • thaKingRocka

Perhaps the space key is not incorporated until the higher difficulties.

  • Testsubject909

Not bad for the Japanese learning english. But for us? I think we’ve already got tons of better alternatives.

    But that’s just me.
