Tetris Axis Adds A Twist To The Block Dropping Game

By Spencer . January 10, 2011 . 12:03pm

Hudson is developing another Tetris game. While Tetris Party added a bunch of multiplayer features, Tetris Axis for the Nintendo 3DS has a new gameplay modes. That’s one of the game’s "twists," the other is literal since the block dropping game is played with the board titled and twisted at an angle.

It appears the game will have 3D blocks flying out of the screen when you clear a line or stack blocks to get a tetris. Tetris Axis is slated for a summer release in Japan.

This just made me think of Space Invaders Extreme and all its crazy flashes and explosions, that would be pretty cool in 3D.

I knew developers would be using 3D mostly for eyecandy.

When can we expect some games that really take advantage of it? If it’s actually possible, of course.

What else you gonna expect? If they can’t use it for gameplay reasons they will use it for graphical reasons.

But surely there could be some way to use it for gameplay?

Otherwise, the 3DS will end up being the console that breaks Nintendo’s record of efforts in innovating instead of just giving better graphics (we can say that 3D is mostly a graphical enhancement).

With CING gone, and the 3DS currently getting many popular game series with established gameplay, it might take more time than on DS and Wii. The lack of interest in “innovative” titles like Another Code or Elebits might have also warned some developers.

I hope we’ll see more gameplay relevant, well planed use of 3D once developers like Hudson, Konami’s smaller teams and Marvelous’ contract workers get the green light for their games.

They tried that on virtual boy.
Remember Pokemon Puzzle League on N64 (or Panel de Pon on GCN in the Nintendo Puzzle Collection)? The 3D Cylinder mode?
That came from Tetris 3D on Virtual boy. It sucks for tetris.

My guess is that they’ll have some sort of Blockout mode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtg6GIuBpZE

Well, Paper Mario strikes me as a game that.. -could- use the 3D function for an enhancement in gameplay. But yes, 3D is really just an ‘enhanced’ graphics effect..

Yes, this is exactly what we need — an awkward perspective and long, flashy line clear animations slowing down the game even more. Thanks Hudson, you’ve really knocked it out of the park once again!

Meanwhile, Tetris Grand Master 4 is still canceled.

Most early titles are just going to be experimental. everyone remembers kirby’s canvas curse? Yoshi’s touch and go? Pac Pix? those were just a few experimental titles for the original Nintendo DS. You going to have to expect the same with the 3DS.
