Nintendo Also Packages "Mature" 3DS Games In Black Boxes Too

By Spencer . January 14, 2011 . 9:30am

Starting last year, Nintendo made a rule that all Wii games rated CERO C (Japan’s 15+ rating) or higher had to be packaged in black boxes. The first game to hit shelves with in a black case was Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles from Capcom.

It appears Nintendo is carrying this trend over to the Nintendo 3DS. Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition’s is packaged in a white case…

… while the CERO D rated Tom Clancy’s: Splinter Cell 3D is in a black box.

    ugly box arts xD

  • Wow dude in Tom Clancy is old, he has like gray hair. Oh well, personally, the black boxes look better than the standard white. I never noticed if they did that here, then again, how often do I buy non Naruto ds games? lol.

Sam Fisher was apparently born in 1957 so that would make him in his 50’s today. Not old per-se, but certainly older than most main characters in games.

I’d like to see more old people in games personally. Gamers are getting older all the time so it’d be nice for games to represent that a bit too. Not to the exclusion of young people mind you, but I think it could open new avenues for story telling. It could be interesting to have game where you play someone really old who has to survive an ordeal, but have playable flashback to events that occurred when they younger that somehow ties into the story kind of like Assassin’s Creed.

That would be pretty cool actually. I’ts nice to see variety in protagonists instead of the usual ultra-buff space marines (in western games) or spiky haired teenagers (in JP games).

  • Phoenix_Apollo

It’s like the Dreamcast all over again!

  • Zero_Destiny

Ugh 3DS boxes still look ugly lol. But I do think the whole black and white thing is cool. Doesn’t help Nintendo’s image much (with everyone sayin’ they’re a kiddie a company and now Nintendo is goin’ out of it’s way to distinguish mature games from the others) but I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

  • Code

rar, I’m really not keen on having the logo/banner on the edge of the case compared to the spine, it seems counterintuitive design wise.

    • Zero_Destiny

Extaclly!!! What a waste of space, could do more with the box. It reminds me of the old PS3 boxes (they’re ugly) and didn’t need PLAYSTATION 3 printed on the side of’em. Glad PS3 is on the top now, boxes look better.

      • The DS Logo takes up more space on a DS box than this logo does.

        • Zero_Destiny

Wait which logo? PS3 or 3DS? Anyways if PS3 logo is bigger I’m glad it’s on top now because it’s harder to notice and if we’re talkin’ about 3DS I guess I never notice DS logo’s size because of its’ proximity to the spine. 3DS is in an awkward spot that makes you can’t help but stare at it thus makin’ it seem big or at least bigger that it should look. (in my opinion) lol I’m basically just whining thou so don’t worry. Nothin’ against the 3DS or Nintendo or anything. The thing isn’t even out yet. The complaint is just my two cents about it I guess.

          • I Compared the size of the Ds logo on the DS box to the 3ds logo on the 3ds box. The DS logo takes up more space.

    • Its more then likely used to distinguish 3DS software from legacy DS software. It may change once the 3DS is better established, or remain the same to stay recognizable.

      • Zero_Destiny

I don’t know Gameboy to Gameboy color didn’t change anything but the words printed on the spine. The same for the advance. And while the DS spine was way more unique at least it was a spine. So I don’t see why nintendo needs to change it up now and not back then.

  • I like it better this way, because now they can have Boxart that circles the entire case instead of having a barrier between the front and back.

And say what you will about the SC boxart, that is a gorgeous picture.

  • thebanditking

I just don’t like the package design for 3DS. The console logo just looks out of place on the right and the only reason it seems to have been done was because they wanted it to look like a DS game but different enough to tell them apart, which is just lazy. Over all I am just not impressed with whats going on with 3DS. The launch window games look iffy, the console is pretty costly and the battery life is less then desirable (also that soap dish charger is neither portable or very nice looking).

    • Aoshi00

So far I only have beef w/ the Prof Layton 5 cover, because that’s one of the games I want to get a 3DS for, and compared to the other 4 games it’s just awful. There’s simple but there’s sloppy.. as someone pointed out before, it’s like “How to draw a Layton”.. I’m a sucker for new gadgets, I think I would get one when Love Plus comes out or something.. or Castlevania, or Gyakuten Saiban 5. Right now I want Layton but in no rush..

The charger stand is a bit bulky but I never really bring my charger w/ me..

The Blk and wht distinction are a nice touch, I think the Zangeki no Reginleiv cover is very spiffy..

      • daizyujin

I honestly like the idea of the charger stand myself. It makes it more like a docking station like I have for my cellphone and laptop and makes it easier in my opinion to have a “permanent” place for it. Considering I just sat my DS and PSP on a small table and plugged them in, I always worried about them falling off, so this is a nice option.

It kinda reminds me of the docking station my old IBM laptop had and that thing was useful since it not only allowed me to use it while charging, but also gave me a serial port and a dvd drive. One thing I am interested to know about it though is if you can actually use it while it is on the stand, like as a 3D movie player.

As for the boxes, well I think it is a good idea, kinda surprised it took this long for it to happen. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo institutes a similar policy here in the US.

        • Aoshi00

Yea, I really don’t mind so much either, it’s like one of those induction charge pads for your phones or the energizer charger pad for the Wii remote. I even bought a plastic stand for my DSi.

It would be nice if they let you play it while it’s sitting on the stand charging, sometimes you’re just too tired to hold it and just want to set it on the table or your lap to play some games w/ your stylus.. I’m not sure if people would watch too many movies on it like the PSP..

  • PrinceHeir

now soccer moms have no reason to whine when their kids are playing those “mature” games. but then again, i will not be surprised if they made another excuse just to blame video games.

  • Tom_Phoenix

I certainly don’t mind. I always wanted to see more black boxes. =)

That said, I do find it strange why Nintendo broke tradition by shifting the banner to the right. I don’t see what was wrong with keeping it to the left, especially since it has been that way since the Game Boy. =/

    • Zero_Destiny

Exactly it looks silly and will be weird to look at first especially when I put it on my self next to my other gameboy and DS games.

    • daizyujin

It is like when I had my mother complain about why Ubuntu has the close, minimize, and maximize buttons on the left of the window instead of the right like in XP and Windows 7. There is really no reason why it should be on the right either, it is just what you are used to. Trust me, give it some time, you will give used to it.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Well, OBVIOUSLY, I will get used to it. It is just that I don’t really see the point. It is a change for the sake of change.

  • neon6

So long will it be when games no longer have to carry 3D in the title?

  • MarkMario

Cool black boxes but, I really don’t like how they have the bar and logo on the right, I would either like it to be on the left where (like the DS) or at the top (like the wii).

  • Vino (Tim N)

I don’t really care about the boxes, I think its a pretty good idea. But just having 3D in titles of games still bugs me lol

    • daizyujin

Not as bad as what they might call sequels to “Insert Game Name 3D” The name for the sequel to Piranha 3D doesn’t give me much faith. That movie is going by the title “Piranha 3DD.”

Then again, it would be appropriate for the next iteration of Dead or Alive.

  • more black please …
