A Message From Tetsuya Nomura About Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

By Spencer . January 18, 2011 . 3:30pm

If you missed the news from last night, Kingdom Hearts 3D’s official title is Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The new name came with a press release, which confirms the Nintendo 3DS game will have a completely new game system and new Disney Worlds to explore.

A trailer shown at the Square Enix 1st Production Premiere revealed the Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the worlds in Dream Drop Distance.

The press release also had a note from director Tetsuya Nomura. This is what he had to say about the Nintendo 3DS game.

The tenth anniversary for Kingdom Hearts is right before us, now the series is finally moving towards the last phase of the story. This story will be a prologue for the final battle, as with other titles many surprises await. This time, I took on a challenge and chose to use new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS, to present these surprises. A completely new system is being prepared, which will let you gaze at the vision of the future of Kingdom Hearts. I believe it will be bold and have even more exhilarating action. Please look forward to it.

“I will continue to milk and tease you until you can’t stand it anymore and then just about when I finally give in and release the third chap…no I will continue to milk and tease you”

    • Was there a point to this comment or are you just trying to start a quarrel? Let me know so I can tell whether to ban you or not. :)

      • I like the hardass-Ishaan, but I can think of worse trolls on this very blog ;)

        • PersonaBull

The problem with that is, if you’re thinking of the “worse troll” I’d imagine you are, cowcowcow is purely and blatantly just stirring up trouble (not just with this comment, by the way. I actually can’t remember seeing any of cowcowcow’s comments being anything but snarky and/or one-liners) rather than even try to create any real discussion. Also, it’s pretty obvious what the answer to Ishaan’s rhetorical question was up there, so people could really just consider it a warning to watch it.

That’s my personal interpretation, at least.

          • Yeah, Most of cowcow’s comments are of that style :P

    • When you walk away~, you don’t hear me say~, pleeeeaaase oh baby, don’t go~!

Simple and cleaan is the way that you make me feel tonight!~ Is haaard to let this song go~

      • PersonaBull

As much as I really do love that song, I can’t wait for a new one to come with KH3. It would be awesome if they could pull a new song out for KH3D, but I doubt they will. KH3 will be another huge explosion for Utada Hikaru if they get her to do a new song. She did a really good job with KH1 and 2’s, so here’s hoping for an amazing third. <3

I also wonder if they'd continue using her songs for KH games after the Xehanort Saga finishes, or if they'd move on to new artists (or even purely Yoko Shimomura and Kaoru Wada (I'd be sad if these two were gone from the KH universe)).

        • Scrooge_McDuck

I thought Utada Hikaru won’t make any song for the franchise anymore due to some disagreements?

          • mirumu

Yeah, a dispute over payment is what I heard.

          • Testsubject909

ouch… really, that’s all I have to say.

        • Didnt she give up singing?! I cant imagine a videogame being enough of a thing to get someone to end their hiatus on singing…

          • There is actually a difference between going into indefinite hiatus and retiring. She plans on coming back… some time. Maybe a year or two or five or… I dunno, but she’s not actually retiring.

          • Testsubject909

Maybe to sing a new song for the proper Kingdom Hearts 3?

I mean. She sang for the first KH. Then she did a new song for KH2… Surely we need a new song for KH3, rather then a remix or just a re-use.

        • From an interview she had that I’ve read, she said she didn’t get paid for the first two so she doesn’t plan on doing any more songs for Kingdom Hearts, that and the amount of time and strain she said it took her to write both a Japanese and English version of the song was too much she had also stated. I really don’t see a new Utada theme, though I still hope it happens. Her newer stuff is too R&B style, so if she does, I hope she doesn’t incorporate that style into a new theme for KH3, that would be pretty dumb =/

          • holyPaladin

Actually Utada newer stuff is pop/experimental
Her R&B style is when she first debuted…

        • holyPaladin

          Hikki on hiatus :(
Dunno when she will coming back…
I’m waiting for new KH and Evangelion song from her…

  • “Please look forward to it.”

Well, he did say please. Birth by Sleep’s secret ending made me excited for an epic conclusion, but I still don’t mind a few more titles here and there. It’s the kind of series whose ending is something I’m looking forward to, but will also miss once it’s finally gone.

Its excellent track record makes me believe that I won’t be disappointed.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I don’t think Disney and Square-Enix will let this series finish, even without Nomura…

    • Urahara

Well they are planning to continue on even after the Xehanort Saga has been concluded, so I highly doubt it will be ending at any point in the near to mid future.

      • PersonaBull

I can think of a few mysteries that probably wont be solved even at the end of KH3 that can be expanded upon once the Xehanort Saga is done with. There’s a lot unknown about the Keyblade itself, and there are plenty of ways for Sora to continue his adventuring in more places with new unknown enemies. :)

  • joesz

Man I’m looking forward for this,But probably the game is still at it’s first stage of development :(

  • “A completely new system is being prepared…” uhm, not the 3DS?

Anyway, seems like the usual phrase to keep us hooked and buying these games, which is pretty awesome to remind us that the story continues to continue and satisfies our hungry for more Sora ^_^

  • i wonder if the “new” system involves the armor from bbs

    • PersonaBull

I doubt it. This game seems to be working in a kind of “dreamscape,” and the armor/black cloaks were actually both just armor to protect from the latent darkness in between worlds and realms (including the dark corridors). Though, I’m sure it was just as nice having the armor as regular armor (for that final battle sequence of BbS). If I’m right, KH3D will technically happen all in Yen Sid’s tower.

It’s all just my speculation, though.

  • “I took on a challenge and chose to use new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS”

Hasnt the ps3/xbox360 has been a new console for a longer time than the 3DS? He still hasnt taken the “challenge” for these consoles for the KH franchise…

Is too obvious they would go for where there is more chance to be more money… PS3 can have 3D as well, even if you need a new TV for that. (i know is not the same thing but you get my idea)

I don’t know about you guys, but that part of his comment made one of my eyebrows rise >_>

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Well, there’s always the business side, so…

I think (hope?) KH HD is inevitable. It’s just a matter of time.

There’s no way Nomura isn’t aware of how much fans want it. (I mean, fans DO want it, right? I do, at least)

And when it finally comes, it will be GLORIOUS. (Or so I hope)

      [I hope a lot, don’t I? =P]

      • Well, im not talking about it being in “HD” tho, but im sure the new gen consoles have a lot more of horsepower, and with this, new possibilities for all part of gameplay, and of course it would look gorgeous (but this is not what i exactly mean xD). But for big companies as Square Enix, the money part is really important… so i guess i can understand.

Yeah, my hope goes in that they are saving the KH3 for the ps3 (and maybe xbox), but what he said sounded to me like… “Ohhh im taking this NEW challange! I know im crazy, but someone got to do it, eh?, i know, there is no need to thank me” pft. >_> Maybe is just my imagination though.

But of course, and as always, im looking forward to this.

        • PersonaBull

Nah, the only possibility with KH3 is that it might be multiplatform on the xbox360 as well as the PS3, otherwise you’ve got nothing to worry about. People may have little-to-no faith in Square-Enix lately, but they definitely know enough to put KH3 on the PS3 for sure.

And yes, it will be glorious <3

          • Testsubject909

And yet, deep inside, I have some inkling of a fearful idea that they might end up trying to push for both Kinect and Move support with stereoscopic 3D HD…

Nah, they wouldn’t do something like that. At least, I’m hoping not. There are just some things they wouldn’t do, knowing the risks…

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Ten years, wow. I feel old. And I’m not =P

Can’t say I missed Sora and Riku’s old design (damn clown shoes), but the gameplay on the trailer looks good and fast paced, which is great. I’m also happy about the character swap system! That means more playable Riku, and who knows, maybe we’ll have even more characters to play with in the last chapter of Xehanort’s saga (looking at you Aqua, Ven and Terra). I’m expecting a whole lot of fan service in that one.

Speaking of the last chapter (about Xehanort), it will be fun comparing it to the first entry and see just how much it has evolved (complicated storytelling aside, I guess).

But that’s still very far away… Hopefully, by the time this one comes out, I’ll already have a 3DS.

    • I seriously cant belive it already has been ten years, it doesn’t feels like that much has happened in KH.

Seriously, it doesn’t feel xD, i prefer the new clothes though (KH2), i feel they are now too childish with those clothes, but oh well, there must be a meaning to it, at the end KH3 will have the new clothes.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I still remember watching some early footage for KH in some videogaming TV show. I was automatically interested, it looked great. Then, as soon as I got a PS2, I bought it and loved every second of it. It was magical stuff =P

Then, a few years later, screens from KH II showing some new guy (Roxas) and Yoda Mickey started appearing, and… Well, you’ve been there!

About the costumes, I don’t dislike them, but thinking about it, I don’t really like them either. They’re just there. Happy that Nomura chose black as the main colour for II, though.

        (I hope he re-designs the footwear. I can’t stand it =P)

        • Haha yeah xD goofy shoes pwnz all. KH1 and 2 were magical times, with one small sidestory on gba and quick and epic sequel… *sigh*

        • Testsubject909

The answer is simple. We’re becoming old. And quickly too.

You know how that stereotypical grandpa keeps talking about the good old days? He’s seen something like… two or maybe three generations go before him.

          But what of us gamers?

I’ve technically started on the Atari/Commodore, even though Nintendo was my first true console. Then Snes came by, followed by N64/PS1. Then PS2/Xbox/Gamecube, then here we are, on the PS3/360/Wii.

That’s already 4 generations of gaming that passed by me, being on my fifth, the PS3/360/Wii. Technically, we’ve gone to the 6th* [wrote fifth, my bad] as the inclusion of the Move and Kinect are meant as a form of advancement beyond and an extension of the lifespan of the current generation, of sort. That and, the DS is part of this said fifth generation, and we approach the 3DS and PSP2 which, themselves, announces a new generation of gaming, again.

By age, we may be young, but by experience, we’re old farts who’ve gone through much. I for one tell myself that these young daggnabit so-called gamers nowadays have it easy and don’t know the meaning of a real manly challenge, bringing up memories of the first two generations of gaming I truly involved myself into… And often telling myself and others that they’re taking things for granted far too often, as well as how spoiled they are when it comes to their games.

…And think, about maybe 20 or so years have passed, yet we’ve experienced so many generations coming and going, and the new one keeps bringing some of us worries about what the next generation of gamers will be like. And we approach more and more parts of this age old stereotype of the grandpa who knew better and clings too much to the past.

…Though back on Kingdom Hearts. It is one of the great treasures Squaresoft gave to us gamers before it merged. And I’m happy they did. A wonderful mixture of fantasy and disney magic, with a touch of that neverending story feel.

  • Raidou

There’s something about playing as kid Sora & Riku that’s turning me off this. Kingdom Hearts has always been a series with a visual style that evolved along with the gameplay.
I realise playing as them in these forms is probably for the sake of the story and there’s no chance I won’t be buying this on day one… but I’m just not excited.

  • MrRobbyM

TEN YEARS, WHAT?! *counts in head*

…oh my goodness. Ten years, two main entires, 1209423 games that further convolute the story.

  • Zero_Destiny

Looks fun, haven’t played ALL the side games and there kind of getting old now, but I’m willing to give it a try, and hope III won’t be be too far off (like when the series turns 15 lol).

  • Ok, this’ll be the last Time I say it, but I totally Called HBoND!

The Gameplay bits at the end were simply amazing! I cannot (Read: Can, because I can’t afford a 3ds atm) wait for this game to come out! Stripper!Sora and Dantiku will change the way KH is played forever!

And On a different Note, where the Heck is Kairi? She’s got way too much badass potential to NOT be doing something! We know you have the spirit Kairi; Don’t end up another useless DamselinDistress Princess!

  • PrinceHeir

i just hope we get a completely new story in the next arc, but then again nomura said even if the xenohart arc is finished, he will still continue o use sora as the main character of the series.

oh well hopefully they learn alot in Versus XIII and implement some of it’s elements in KHIII :D

  • karasuKumo

I like Nomrura (probably one of the few people who do) but I hate the fact he never turns up to the events focused on showing the games he is developing. It’s disrespectful to the fans to be honest.

I’ve never played a KH game but when III comes out I might get the first two and do a marathon :).

  • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Yup, all signs point to the Master trial to prepare them for killing Xehanort, and saving the 3 from BBS

  • I hope (at least) this game doesn’t use Simple and Clean again as theme. I would hope it was Sanctuary or (highly hard to be) a new song (or at least a different remix of those songs). Other thing I wish (but that will probably not be fulfilled) is that they don’t use a lame excuse for Sora and Riku “wearing” their younger versions.

  • “I will keep splitting up the series over 50 different consoles, so have fun buying all of these or reading a story summary on the internet.”

    – Tetsuya Nomura

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOO!! No final battle! It can’t end! NEVER!

  • I’m taking this to mean that after this, work on Kingdom Hearts 3 will finally be started. Or on a another spin-off with different characters and worlds, which I wouldn’t actually be against.
