April Fools Joke Becomes Actual PSP Game

By Spencer . January 25, 2011 . 10:45pm

imageR-Type developer Irem pulls of elaborate April Fool’s jokes like R-Type sweets and Disaster Report crowbars year after year. In 2001, their joke was a Doki Doki Suikoden (doki doki is the sound of a throbbing heart) dating sim game.

Guess what Irem’s making ten years later.

Famitsu has the scoop on Doki Doki Suikoden for PSP, which stars a transfer student into Seven Wonders Academy. In the game you’ll solve mysteries with the help of six high school heroines shown in the magazine. Nana, in the center, has cosplay as a hobby and dons cat ears.

Cosplay is actually an important element in the game. The strength of your heroines will change depending on how they’re dressed. Doki Doki Suikoden has over 200 kinds of outfits including jackets, swimsuits, sailor school uniforms and socks. Lots of socks. There are over 30 kinds of socks.

While investigating mysteries, players run into battles. Doki Doki Suikoden uses a simulation battle system where you control the protagonist and three heroines. When the girls take damage their clothes take get torn up.

Doki Doki Suikoden comes out this April in Japan.

This actually sounds kinda cool! Hell, I’d play it. My money’s already on Never, Ever, Ever Gonna See the Light of Day in the US, though.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Well we did see Tierkreis. Now only if S2 would show up on the damn Sony store.

      • But those games are from Konami… this is from Irem and not tied to the Suikoden RPG line at all. It’s another take on the Water Margin story like the Data East fighting game Dark Legend.

      • Zero_Destiny

Why did you have to bring that up? I love the Suikoden series and own all of them except Suikoden II. It’s like hundreds of dollars to find a copy. Then I find out “Oh there’s a port of it with Suikoden I on the PSP.” and we never got it!!! Then I found Suikoden I is on PSN but no II. Konami why do you torture me XD!!!

    • Darkrise

Same here, though depending on how much gameplay there is, I’d might it ^.^ That… INTERESTING dmg system like QB: Spiral Chaos!

      • Barrit

I heard Spiral Chaos was actually pretty good. Have you ever played it? If so, how import friendly is it?

        • Darkrise

Yeah, it was easy to import. Playasia has it and I got it in 2 days. Price isn’t too expensive for an import but it’s typical for a psp game’s price in japan. about $67 U.S? Idk but yeah it was interesting. Halfway finished with the game and there’s even an english guide if you’re interested.

          • Barrit

Ah by “import friendly” I meant how easy is it to follow without knowledge of Japanese, but if there’s an English guide I guess that makes it much easier to follow! Sure, I wouldn’t mind the info on the guide, as I will probably pick it up eventually, thanks.

          • Darkrise

Oh lol well the menus ARE easy to follow. It’s pretty hard not to forget which menu is which and the combat menu is also easy to follow, just click it to see what it does and you’ll figure it out easily. It’s just the story that I can’t follow since it’s not voiced in their dialogues except in battle.

This video pretty much sums up the basics of the menus and there’s a bit more.

Here’s a guide for more on what you should do if you’re stuck.

  • PrinceHeir

now if only they can make a joke about ZOE3 and make it happen :)

    • Be kind of pointless for Irem to joke about that :D

  • cool! i would definitely buy this, but i’m still a beginner with japanese language…

  • Chow

So is this a whole ‘nother set of 108 characters, or is it set in a specific era, or is it going to be a huge amalgam from the series as a whole?

    • M’iau M’iaut

I’d expect we’ll at least see Vicki in some form……but if you date her, just expect to find yourself warped to the 3rd planet around Delta Theta IX without a way to get home.

  • kroufonz

can we assume this is some kind of warm up, there will be some HD Suikoden soon!

  • Testsubject909

Either this is an incredibly ludicrous april’s fool’s joke… or it’s an incredibly ludicrous game.

    Either way, I’m interested.

  • So technically it’s been 10 years in the making.

And who read this and thought this was to do with the Suikoden series?

  • Im already sold, just by reading socks was more than enough

    • Kai2591

      Zettai Ryouiki Grade A FTW!

      • Not too low or it’ll leave the target area.

      • Legs were already my weak point, but with that… X____X

  • Zero_Destiny

I heard Doki Doki Suikoden and I was sold. Then scrolled through and realized it had nothing to do with Suikoden series by Konami :( And here I thought I could finally hit on all the chicks from the Suikoden games. Oh well besides Tierkreis we haven’t seen too many Suikoden games maybe this will give Konami the push they need to make a Suikoden VI lol

  • gatotsu911

If I were a Suikoden fan, I’d be absolutely freaking out over this. In a bad way.

  • eliel

i don’t wana sound like a perv but ii hope to c trailer soon LOL….

  • Jirin

I was hoping for ‘The Fruits Of Ire’.

  • kupomogli

Irem needs to stop announcing and developing other games and finish Steambot Chronicles 2. Either they’ll delay the game once they do start putting more work into it to put it on the PS4 or they’ve already cancelled and just haven’t told anyone.

People will eventually lose interest in the game if it takes too long seeing as it’s a series that doesn’t have much popularity to begin with.

    Sad Face. :(
