Vanquish Boosts Past 800,000 Sold, Sonic Colors Sells Over Double That Number

By Spencer . February 4, 2011 . 1:18am

soniccVanquish, the fourth game from the Sega and Platinum Games partnership, sold 820,000 copies worldwide since its release between October 19, 2010 and the end of 2010. For comparison’s sake Bayonetta reached 1.1 million units during the same fiscal period in 2009, but was only officially available in Japan during those months.

Sonic Colors was Sega’s breakout hit during the season. 1.85 million units of Sonic Colors were sold worldwide. Football Manager 2011 for PC and PSP was the third best selling game with 690,000 units between Europe and North America.

    Good, sequel confirmed.
Terrible games with worst sales are at the fifth sequel, this can only go better.

    • http://twitter.com/mangeezer jerry

Eh, not really, Mikami left Platinum to work at his own company. Wouldn’t really want a non-Mikami sequel.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Mikami didn’t “leave.” He was never part of Platinum to begin with. He’s been setting Tango Gameworks up all along. There’s nothing that prevents them from working together again.

        • http://twitter.com/mangeezer jerry

Pretty sure he stated that the game he’s currently working on at Tango will be his last, looks like he’s training some new chick to be his successor

          • z_merquise

I do hope that whatever game Mikami is directing at Tango shouldn’t be his last. He must continue what he started with Vanquish at Platinum!! HE MUST!!

Besides, he’s the guy who said that he would cut-off his head if ever “the should-be-exclusive-only-to-Gamecube” Resident Evil 4 was ported to other console and look what happened.

I was actually pretty saddened by his decapitation too.

im glad Vanquish did great :)

actually the ending was a cliffhanger so yeah i think Mikami will be back :D

lol i remember that too, well that’s capcom decision anyway.

@Doomrider for some reason i played this 3 times in a row not to mention you forgot kojima is also here :P

  • Bakuryukun

bleh. I really didn’t care for Sonic Colors. Vanquish had brilliant gameplay, and totally deserved to sell more than it did.

  • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

Sonic’s got his mojo back. Now don’t screw up his momentum Sonic Team.

Good numbers for Vanquish. Now I just need to get the damn game :D

    • Aoshi00

And you weren’t part of those numbers for Vanquish!? Gotta support Platinum man :) I loved Bayonetta and Vanquish and will keep an eye on Anarchy Reigns, Vanquish was hard but fun.. I liked Unleashed quite much, but haven’t gotten Sonic Colors yet (or the Black Knight), too bad it’s only on the Wii this time and not multiplatform..

      • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

Oh I know shame on me lol. But I’m not someone with deep pockets I’m afraid. Still plan on getting it so will be supporting Platinum.

Anarchy Reigns looks to be a blast, especially with online play :D

      • GamerKT

        DON’T GET BLACK KNIGHT!

        • Aoshi00

Duly noted :) That’s why I haven’t gotten it all this time. My mind says no, but my collector heart says yes lol.. Guess I’ll just stick to Colors since everyone says it’s good.

      • PrinceHeir

listen to this man he knows what he’s talking about ^^

hopefully Travis Touchdown would make a guest appearance in the game. i would love to beam katana some people online :)

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

          How come I didn’t notice Kojima =O

The best I got was 105.30 KM. His head landed on a dinner table, splashing food on the faces of everyone around it. So stupid =P

          Mikami <3

          • PrinceHeir

well i did the lowest cut so it landed faster. he’s in the lower left in a cardboard box XD

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Sonic Colors was phenomenal! Im so glad it did so well. Good news for the prelude to Sonic’s 20th. I hope for more excellent Sonic games this year, 2011

    • Bakuryukun

It just seemed to me like the daytime levels of Sonic Unleashed (which I also didn’t care for) with a splash of Mario Galaxy, because Sonic for all his speed likes to fall behind Mario by a couple of years when it comes to game ideas these days.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hector-Cortes/100000351183370 Hector Cortes

lol hilarious dude ever heard of Sonic 2? Yea Sonic was doing space way before mario ever was so please don’t give that always behind mario excuse. Sonic Colors was very much a very good Sonic title and probably the best in the series since Sonic Adventure 2.

        • http://twitter.com/Linkstrikesback IDE

Lol hilarious dude. Mario was doing space before sonic the hedgehog 2,Ever heard of Super Mario land 2?

  • thaKingRocka

Vanquish was one of my favorite games of the year. I loved every minute of it, even the frustrating final boss battle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I did my part for Vanquish.

  • z_merquise

So 800,00 copies sold worldwide for Vanquish wasn’t bad right? Can someone clarify if that was considered a success or not?

Vanquish is simply one of the awesome games of this generation and I am really happy of my purchase for the game. So awesome that it didn’t felt old even I played it a lot of times and no 3rd person shooting games that I know can imitate the way Vanquish was designed.

    • jarrodand

Sell through was undoubtedly far, far lower than 800,000. It might not even be half that.

It’s first NPD, Vanquish did less than 50k combined. So worse even than Madworld (66k) or just the PS3 version of Bayonetta (60k).

Indeed, it’s always the sold-to-retailers vs sold-to-consumers debate.

I don’t know about America, but whoever decided the MSRP for some European countries was insane. I saw that game for 70€ in more than just one place.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

At last … a SONIC game that true to its root …

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Those are some relatively impressive numbers for Vanquish, but how many of those copies were sold at full price? It got cheap pretty quickly, at least in the UK and I’m sure the same thing happened in many other places.

Still gotta get my copy =X

  • shion16

2010 was a great year for sega
Vanquish was my fav game of last year
Sonic Colors was fun and beautiful (kinda short but it was ok)
and i must buy Resonance Of Fate when i could

Im happy for the good numbers =D

  • Tokyo Guy

As someone who liked Vanquish, I’m sorry to see that it didn’t sell more. Those numbers would be pretty good if it was only sales for Japan.

But as someone who liked Vanquish, I will fully admit the game had serious flaws, the most noticeable being the horribly short length of the game, and the second being the glaring absence of multiplayer.

I’d really like a “finished” version to be released…

  • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

Glad to hear Sonic Colors did well. It was a step in the right direction. And the music’s AMAZING.

    • http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=2704923 Buntar0

“It was a step in the right direction”
The space shuttle mode was their best idea. Playing all stages in a row, with no story sequences, brought back the thrill of the 16bit days gameplay, This should be in every platformer from now on.

  • Alexisonfire

Fantastic. I think Sega should be rewarded for making and publishing great games as opposed to their usual crap.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CA2UGKXZ4J5VHTG2FHL4OHKSXA Jaden

Impressive. Though I expected as much, Sonic games either way you perceive them have great replay value and as a fellow Sonic fan who also owns and enjoys this game, I can’t wait for more Sonic greatness.^_^

    • puchinri

That’s very true, and Colors is a great Sonic game that has some great replay value too. I hope we get another title as great as Colors relatively soon.

  • neo_firenze

Are those Sonic Colors numbers for one version, or Wii + DS combined?

Kind of misleading if it’s combined, since they’re two completely different games (I bought both).

    • puchinri

That is quite true (I hadn’t thought of that).
How does the DS version compare to the Wii version? I’m tempted to get it, but I’ve heard good though somewhat mixed things about it.

  • Happy Gamer

I didn’t play neither of these titles but they both look fantastic. Played the Sonic Colors NDS demo and it was fantastic! Can’t even imagine Wii version. These days it’s so hard to sit and play games with grad school, marriage, and just time period. I used to bag on married guys never hanging out or play games or older people in general but now that it’s beens almost decade plus, and I am at that age, looking back on my SNES controller brings me back to how young I was when thinking life was just me + video games… which honestly wasn’t a bad thought lol.

but back to topic, If any games at all I think I will pick these two up…

  • capristrider

Vanquish rocks, so fun and full of kinetic energy, I just hope there is a sequel especially since the ending was novel but unresolved, I wish to open a can of WHOOP-ASS on Victor Zaitsev. Those sales figures don’t look to hot though. Fingers crossed for a sequel….

  • Apache_Chief

Vanquish and Bayonetta were both really good, but Vanquish didn’t have tits. I find that to be an important factor for sales comparisons.

    • SolidusSnake

That scientist chick was pretty hot.

  • thebanditking

I wish there was a PS3 version of Colors. The best sonic game in years and I couldn’t experience it in HD, still the game turned out good and is a step in the right direction. Shame about Vanquish, it really is a great game. It’s funny how Bayonetta a very Japanese game, did better in the west then Vanquish which is more western in design. I could almost say Japanese devs do better when they stick to their roots rather then try and emulate but nah that would be silly…..right?

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Bayonetta had virtually no competition when it came out though. Vanquish released bang in the middle of Medal of Honor and Call of Duty season without multiplayer…

I’d also argue that Vanquish is very much Mikami sticking to his roots, considering he pioneered the modern-day third-person shooter with RE4.
