Gundam The 3D Battle Throws Over 70 Mobile Suits Into Battle

By Spencer . February 9, 2011 . 1:06pm

031[2]Artdink, the developer behind the Mobile Suit Gundam Vs. series for PSP, is working on a Gundam game for the Nintendo 3DS. Gundam The 3D Battle lets players create their own pilot and run through an original story. Events are told in missions through the eyes of a pilot living during that period.

Namco Bandai recreated classic scenes for Gundam The 3D Battle. Players will run through missions in 3D from:

Mobile Suit Gundam

009[3] 010[6] 011[2] 012[1]

Mobile Suit Z Gundam

001[1] 002[2] 003[2] 004[4]

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack

006[2] 007[1] 008[1] 30

A retail leak from Game Star’s product page notes Gundam The 3D Battle packs over 70 missions and over 70 mobile suits onto the Nintendo 3DS cart. Players will be able to further customize mobile suits and train their pilot.

Gundam The 3D Battle is slated for release on March 24 in Japan. A North American release has not been announced at this time.

That’s a lot of mobile suits for a 3DS game. Anyone know the capacity of the 3DS carts?

    • Guest

At launch its 2GB. They said they’ll expand em further into the lifecycle.

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Oh, so about the same as a UMD. Makes sense then

  • Too bad it’s all Original Universe! I’m sorry if I want to play a Gundam game then I need expanding universe suits. Wing, X, Seed, OO, and Unicorn have better designs, and variety. Even though we aren’t getting this game anyway.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

We get the Gundam Musou games, so it’s possible, depending on how well it does in Japan

      • Guest

no we only get THEM because of KOEI

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

So you think there’s no chance of this exiting Japan?

          • Guest

            Very little chance

    • Its very much debatable that AU suits are better, actual fans tend to prefer the UC (the one thats actually good), and Unicorn aint an AU.

      • VERY well said. I would say a vast majority of Gundam fans (at least those I know) prefer UC. While I LOVED 00 (not OO) the original universe is by far the best. I blame the airing of Wing, and the AWFUL pandering that Seed/Destiny received (a dark stain on the Gundam franchise) for people acting like they’re the OMGZ BEST GUNDAM EVER!! deals.

    • hystzen

UC was best design (unicorn is UC) they looked like mechs not over powered monsters that beam spam and hit 20 suits at once. Still i enjoyed 00 (which is before UC ) kinda had a bit of old skool flair to it. the really great gundam games never get released in NA or Euro looking at you psp

  • joesz

    This game proved me wrong.
    Now it really look interesting.

    Oh I’ll just import it — WAIT… That’s right…. It’s friggin’ region locked.

  • Tom_Phoenix

For a cash-in title, this game has a suprising amount of content. While that doesn’t guarantee the game will be good, I suppose it is at least fair if we give it a chance to prove itself.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Cash in title? How? If it was a cash in title don’t you think they’d have gundams from the more recent series, not the ones that are 30 years old?

      • Tom_Phoenix

No, actually, I don’t think so. Cash-in titles tend to play it safe and the UC timeline is about as safe as it gets when it comes to Gundam. While I am sure there are people who hate it, I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that most Gundam fans like the UC timeline. So when it comes to Gundam games, including the UC timeline is a preety safe bet.

If anything, using any of the newer shows (such as SEED or 00) would have been much more risky and experimental due to how divided the fanbase tends to be over them.

But anyway, while it may be a cash-in title, that doesn’t necessarilly mean it will be bad. So I think the best thing to do would be to let the game speak for itself.

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Hm, I suppose so. My only problem with that logic is if the 3DS audience would still be familiar with the Gundam series from so long ago. Then again, in Japan, both Gundam and portable gaming appeals to much wider specturm of people than other countries.

I still like Future Century the best (God Gundam, baby), but I think Universal Century is almost as good. It does have the most amount of series. Zeta Gundam would probably be my second favorite series.

I want a playable Gamera. Something about a giant spinning turtle with jets coming out it’s limbs rickoshaying off enemies like a pinball that appeal to me even though it’d have nothing to do with Gundam (but cross over bonuses are always nice)

But whatever since this game like most Gundam games not made by KOEI has little chance of coming here and thanks to region lock (THANKS Nintendo tanks) guess that puts the options to a limit

  • I didnt dislike 00, its one of the better AUs in my oppinion, and I did appreciate that it was slightly more neutral in how it handles war, compared to Wing and Seeds “EVERYTHING OTHER THAN PACIFISM IS WRONG” cause, ya know, thats a totally realistic worldview.

EDIT: Meant to be a reply hystzen

    love the mecha designs :D

  • well well… so Artdink did this again…. their way of hogging cash and cash over time: release a gundam game with limited suits and missions, then release another sequel adding a bit more suits and missions… and the cycle continue till the end of the console…. without improvement or only slight improvement of gameplay and graphic

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

70 mobile suits is releasing a game with limited suits? There’s only so much space on one cartridge, man

      • i will bet that in the future, Artdink will release the next installment with more suits and missions with the similar size cartridge. why should they limit them now? for profit of course

  • I’ve been asking for a “Grunt” mission mode and the mode where “players create their own pilot and run through an original story” is as close as it gets for now.

Gotta say the graphics look really sharp compared to the last screenshots I saw. Retailers in UK have listed this in a vague way so I’m hoping we’ll get it after launch :D
