Cave Story 3D Is A Nintendo 3DS Launch Window Title

By Spencer . February 10, 2011 . 10:00pm

Cave Story will get its first retail release and NIS America is publishing it. Cave Story 3D is a 2.5D remake of Cave Story with polygon environments and characters.

Here’s what the first cave looks like…

… and concept art for the Nintendo 3DS version.

Mimiga Village before…

… and in 3D.

This is the original egg corridor…

… and what the area looks like on the Nintendo 3DS.

Since this is a full remake, Quote is being redesigned as well. Each character has orthographic concept art approved by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. From top left to bottom right we have Quote, Curly Brace, Igor, and Misery.

Nicalis has been working on Cave Story 3D for quite some time. In fact, the game is targeted for the Nintendo 3DS launch window in North America. We’ll have more about Cave Story 3D’s development and an interview with Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya tomorrow.

Another game added to my must have list.

  • vadde939

A bit slow Siliconera. Other sites had this news up quite a while ago.

    • Long story. We’d rather not go into it.

    • Guest

Yea well no one was reporting it as a launch window title. Thats big news imo.

    • Code

rar, or had this beautiful concept art xwx~! rar, quick check and discovered it on a few other sites, but I wouldn’t call this old news by any stretch >ww>~!

    • I dont check other sites though…

    • If I haven’t seen it, it’s new to me!™

    • Thanks for the constructive comment?

(I’m not sure what you’re trying to prove here…)

      • pedrron

Please don’t feed the troll. (BTW he’s trying to prove how much he hates everything and in turn himself.) Keep up the good work Siliconera! You guys rock!!

    • BTA

To be fair, Ishaan had been hinting about it earlier in the day. I’m guessing there was an agreement of some sort that complicated things?

  • Code

    rarr, omfg now I’ve GOTTA buy a 3DS omo; rar, I love Cave Story wayy too much to pass this up, and seriously it looks absolutely beautiful T_T’ Perhaps not the same way I’d have imagined Egg Corridor, but regardless Pixel x NIS, this is a combination that is absolutely godly TwT;

  • kupomogli

HOLY SH**. That looks amazing. Anyways. Nothing but ports and remakes. I will be picking this up though, defintely. Doesn’t mean that it’s going to be soon and I’m still waiting for a 3DS price drop, but this is the game to own for the 3DS right here.

If you are planning on getting a 3DS then you owe it to yourself to get this game. One of the best games ever made.

  • The fact that this is targeted for the launch window in North America is the most amazing thing– the launch window games haven’t been much to impress, but this has actually, literally, revived my interest and dedication to keep the pre-order I have for the 3DS.

I love you guys, NISAmerica. Thank you for publishing this!

    • kylehyde

And of course thanks to Nicalis and Pixel for developing

  • LastFootnote

I wasn’t planning on buying a 3DS until Ocarina of Time, but if this comes out first, I may have to pick the system up earlier.

  • Game doesn’t need a remake because it totally embraced the 16 bit vibe and that’s what made it all the more awesome, can’t see how 3D won’t take away from that charm

edit: not a 3D hater, just that looking at those ‘remade’ pics doesn’t vibe with me. That’s just not what I want to see when I think of Cave Story, doesn’t match the personality at all. If they were gonna do 3D they should have ripped on that upcoming XBLA with the world twisting mechanic, looked like Cave Story but in 3D

    • Code

      You mean Fez >ww<

    • alundra311

I agree that it doesn’t need a remake. But then again, I can always play the original for free and I would love to play this remake.

I wish developers would make games as beautiful as the original cave story.

  • alastor3

it look so beautiful but it’s so much good in 16 bit

  • Icon

    Un… believable…

  • Draparde

I’ve never played cave story but i heard alot about it. i’ll probably pick this up whenever i get a 3DS

  • What a bombshell, holy god. Well done, NISA. I’m honestly jealous.

  • Exkaiser

I was planning on buying the DSiWare version to play on the 3DS, but this is very nice.

  • Wow. I like the original look since it leaves room for imagination, but this really takes it there. Can’t wait to see Balrog!
It’s amazing how a game made by one person came so far. I wonder what Pixel thinks about all this…

  • Croix

I think I’m freaking in love with NISA this year. What will they think of next?

  • malek86

Nice, but will a graphical overhaul be enough to entice people into buying it at full price, considering the game is available for free on PC and for a much lower price on Wiiware (and even DSiWare, which means the game will be already playable on 3DS)?

    • thebanditking

Glad I’m not the only one thinking this. The is a fantastic game but at the end of the day its just another port and one of a game that is available elsewhere for cheaper

      • malek86

Oh, I don’t mind a 3DS port myself. It’s just that the game has seen three different versions in the last 12 months. You’d expect them to let it cool a bit and try something else in the meantime. Publishing the game on 3DS so close to its DSiWare release could make some people unwilling to spend money again (actually, I think they might cancel the european DSiWare version, so not to cannibalize sales at least in that region).

  • This is looking amazing. Drop dead gorgeous. the fact that “some secrets and Easter eggs will be included in the new game and it will be even longer than the original,” just sweetens the deal. Consider me excited :D

    • I’m hoping for a Prinny costume for Quote. XD

  • Bought.

  • Gues I’ll be going through this game yet again. WOOT!

  • discoma

Shaking and crying right now. I hope there’s a “retro” mode so people can switch back to the original version whenever they wanted.

  • ‘s fake.

    • No… it’s quite real. I spoke with Pixel about Cave Story 3D and played it.

      • No you didn’t. After being burned once too many by Cave Story news, I refuse to believe anything related to it any longer.

  • thebanditking

This is really cool but having played this game to death on Wii ware already I don’t have much interest in picking this up again. It’s a shame but I just can’t get excited for another port of this game so soon after playing it.

  • The funny thing is that the 3DS wasn’t a launch day buy for me until now.
