Let’s Discussing! Introducing Siliconera Bounce

We’ve seen readers suggest games and post impressions of what they’re playing in the comments, but there wasn’t a home for those discussions on Siliconera. Since those topics have been popping up more frequently we thought it was time to create a space just for that.

Introducing Siliconera Bounce, a place to give recommendations, share impressions, and ask questions to the fellow readers.

The site is still a work in progress, but since Catherine, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 just came out and reading the V-day comment thread I thought it would be the right time to open a reader driven side of Siliconera and tailor it as it grows.

So, this is Siliconera forums then?

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Such a nice idea! It’s too bad that I only feel like writing about a game when I’m really passionate about it… But I’ll be sure to check it out every now and then =)

I’ll definitely write after playing Arkham City <3

(If I feel like it =P)

  • Ereek

Interesting. I know I can go into long tangents about games, so something like this might be good for me.

Edit: Blah. 6 character minimum name limits.

    • http://twitter.com/Triplicitrine Triplicity/3LeafIvy

      Ereeek :D

      • Ereek

Nah, I added an “i,” haha. I don’t like the look of 3 “e”s together. It’s just me being overly picky for no good reason.

Besides, adding an “i” makes it a bit clearer on pronunciation, I suppose.

  • Pesmerga00

Good Idea. Love the community here.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Interesting, o.o, still don’t know what is the deal about, BUT IS ALWAYS LIKE THIS AT THE BEGINNING OF ANY GAME!, so like any other RPG PLAYER WOULD SAY! Time to explore! And steal in people’s houses!

    • Zero_Destiny

I choose to follow you good sir since how I could wrong with that? I look forward to polls and Reviews about how awesome Ar Tonelico 3 is. And of course maybe hearing about some girls in your little black book. lol ;)

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

lol, i don’t know, i don’t really want a more jealous Zero_Destiny around me xD

        • Zero_Destiny

But but but . . . just let, let, give, no but, you don’t, would you just, let me, give me, let me give, let me give, YOU’RE NOT gonna, give me a, Argh. lol

Recently I’ve been burned out on rpgs, not any rpg though just the PS1 ones (and lower like SNES and NES).

I don’t know why, I’ve played them before and completed them and enjoyed them but i can’t get into them anymore for some reason.

I don’t have this problem with PS2 era rpgs and higher.

I feel the same way atm.. I want to replay the Suikoden series once more (since I’m a big~ fan of it) but after sitting down & playing halfway through Suikoden I, I just can’t seem to finish it and upload the saved data into II.

    let’s see

    - Got MvC3 at midnight launch, as well as used copies of Vanquish and Mass Effect 2.
    - Vanquish is a fun game, but I dunno if I should return it back before tomorrow. I feel like this is my challenge game after Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. God Hard Mode baby. :D
    - Got all the money I need to get Killzone 3
    - Maybe I should get a PS2 too, after all, I gotta say goodbye to my 60GB PS3 sooner or later. ;_;

You have to type in the name game you want to review first before you write up the review on there.

Sounds great. Made an account too. Not many people now but soon, the numbers shall flourish!!

  • Draparde

sounds intresting, created an account and voted on a poll :D

  • Zero_Destiny

Time to rant about why Dragon Quest VI is one of the best games ever made. Wahahahahahahaha!!!!!! lol This is a pretty cool idea.

  • joesz

    Siliconera Bounce rules!

  • SolidusSnake

I created an account, crap, this looks addictive, I’ll probably waste hours of my life rating stuff and writing “quick tips.”

But it’s all for the greater good!

Edit: it looks like this site gives you a lot of potential for stalkin- I mean, following people around virtually and prying into their personal interests. I look forward to getting to know all of you much, much better! ^_^

    • Ren

That’s why I never link any kind of other social sites(mostly because I don’t use them). Although looking at your username, it kinda makes sense. Let the stalking commence.

So many games I am playing now and only manage to finish 2 games. Lol.. I think I have a bad habit of not being able to focus on just only one game. Well, been playing Mass Effect 2, FFXIII and Resonance of Fate which I have yet to finish since last year.. Lol.. Because I have no mood to touch my console at that time…

I really like the witty plot on Mass Effect, makes me think that every sci fi novel should probably be a video game. The story is specially engaging when you get to interact with it. The conspiracy, mystery and everything is interesting. It brings the hero saving the day to a whole new level. At least to me. And more people will read because there are dialogues for you to choose. But, the romance department should have another pro to write on it, because some scenes are really awkward especially the *** scene.. Gawd, I just want to skip that part..The rolling.. Argh.. Can’t really bring myself to even watch it. Lol..

Resonance of fate is full of character. Very funny at times. There is some parts that got me laughing hard. It is kind of lively in that grey town of theirs. Love the trio very much. A very heart warming tale actually. I can feel their family value eventhough they were strangers at first. But, the arena… It can get quite hardcore..It is not hard to defeat the enemy when you know how.. Oh well.. haha.. Just take some time if you want to fully complete the first round of the game.

Currently in the last chapter of FFXIII. A game where its fun when you are strong but not so when you are weak. Story wise is alright. Graphic is superb. No flaw about it. Voice acting are good, some are even better than the Japanese version.. But, I know people been talking about this over and over again, just that, Venille.. Venille Is really not something I can tolerate.. One thing that I actually hoped in the new installation is for SE to not replace J pop with English one. Because, the J-pop clearly suites the mood better…

There are other games like Nier, P3P and more, but, I figure its too long and I mentioned about my thoughts on Nier somewhere before.. So yea..XD

***PS: Any thoughts on Trinity Soul Zill Ol’? And I have been wondering why is Demon Soul so nice when there aren’t any strong plot told? And its generally speaking for masochist.. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks! ^o^

    • Ereek

I feel Mass Effect (1) is basically “Lovecraft: In Space.” Its style of storytelling was surprisingly interesting, despite being a relatively cliche mess.

Unfortunately, I didn’t really get that feeling from ME2. ME2 had cleaner gameplay and was more easily accessible, but I felt it sacrificed what made the story of ME1 so great for me. Well, at least I found ME2′s characters more interesting. I can never deny Mordin, and Grunt just reminds me of a puppy.

I thought some of the romances were really cute, though. Obviously not the best ever written, but cute. ME1′s were better than ME2 and DA1′s, though. The sex scene in ME1 at least seemed somewhat natural. Dragon Age’s came off as “trying too hard” for my taste.

      • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

I agree, some are quite cute. But I loled at DA’s scene… XD

        • Ereek

Yeah, after watching the first romance scene in DA, I ended up having to skip all scenes after. I don’t usually like to skip cutscenes, but DA’s “sex” scenes were just a bit too tacky for my taste.

    I love the badges!
This is cool. It’s a nice way for discussions to stay focused and interesting (and to bypass spam).
    Thanks, Spence!

    • Ereek

I think the badges are going to end up appealing to my sense of obsessive-compulsive. I don’t like to half-ass things, though, so writing some of those reviews is probably going to take me hours.

      • kupomogli

Though I disagreed on some things about your Dragon Warrior 7 review, it was very well done and I liked it a lot.

        • Ereek

Thank you. If there’s anything glaringly obvious that you dislike, you should write your own or comment on mine. I know my opinion isn’t the “one and only right opinion” and I’m glad you can accept my review even if you don’t agree with it. It’s so frustrating when people insult or call each other “idiots” and whatnot simply because they disagree about a game.

Also, I see you got yourself an avatar.

The way this site works is almost confusing. Lunch Network has other communities involved so we get to see other people from other sites. I thought Siliconera Bounce was only specific to…..well, Siliconera.

Also, why are ratings used for decisions on polls? It only has me assume that people are rating games that they haven’t played. :/

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

I think we can lock it down to just Siliconera? When it was in testing it wasn’t locked down of course.

    • RupanIII

yea I noticed that too, it looks like lots of ppl from other communities

  • Chippel

Your Engrish skills have won me over. I will have to lurk this one too now.

  • PrinceHeir

well im playing Xenosaga episode III and MVC3 as well as KOF XI(where the hell is XIII and 2002 UM, Neo Geo BC on PSN?) :D

just recently finished Megaman X6(from X Collection) love the series. too bad X7 and X8 are not fully 2D anymore :(

i can’t wait for games like dissidia duodecuim, the 3rd birthday as well as dark souls, mgs rising, tekken tag 2 ahhh soo many games O_O

we also need more news about Deus Ex HR, even though it’s a slim chance but we need a full 3rd person camera view damn it square.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee
    • Zero_Destiny

Lol Of course you’re playing XenoSaga III!!! So how is it now? Gotten far in it yet? Also go to the site Lee pointed out. That’s were all us cool kids are hanging out and having these kinds of discussions. Come join, it’s really fun. Oh and write a review for XenoSaga so I can know more about it (I’m really starting to want to buy it.) :D

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee

        Xenosaga* III. =P

        • Zero_Destiny

OMG how could I be so FOOLISH I made noob mistake number 1. Now I have to edit it in order to look myself in the mirror instead of just letting it stand like I usually do.

      • PrinceHeir

not that far to be honest. only finished chapter 1 :D

it seems this game has been breakdown to chapters(past games didn’t have this)

well the gameplay i have mixed feelings. it says in the back of the game they combined the gameplay elements between Ep I and Ep II but it seems they made it like every other turn based JRPG. with the attack command or so.

would have love if they stick to Ep II system while bringing back customizable commands from Ep I(you can assign attacks in each button. in Ep II they removed this) well as far for art style love it :) definitely in the right track the VA too is awesome(they brought back the VA) though some VA have been replaced again. love the mech scenes and the music is great(but will need to hear more, battle theme seems bland but boss themes are nice)

will need to play this entirely :)

and yeah i’ll post in the bounce section when im used to the system and far on the game :D

  • Zefiro Torna

Already there. I’ll start posting up some stuff there in a day or two.

Seems like a good companion to the comments, since my only complaint as of recent (due to the growth) is that there’s too much to keep up with in here. This should thin out things while directing the stage lights where appropriate. I look forward to seeing what bounces in the adjoining court.

    • Ereek

I actually prefer using it as a broader tool. I like to look up opinions on older games as well as newer ones. For example, I wrote that PSP Dungeon Siege review because there’s a new Dungeon Siege game coming out in a few months. It gives some people an opinion on how an older game in the series works.

If the site is still popular in 6 months or so, I’d do the same with Mass Effect and Oblivion/Morrowind for ME3 and Skyrim, respectively.

I hope we get a few more reviewers, though!

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Siliconerab Volleyball Unce? Sure, why not. It’s also a good time for me to get back onto here again (nothing to do with Siliconera, just… life). Though I probably can’t post as much as I use to. :(

I did manage to beat Nier in the time I was gone… but it took me like two months (again, life gets in the way). Here’s my lengthy impressions. Spoiler free.

To keep the less interesting bits short, Nier as a playable game at the very least is competent all around. The combat, dungeons, and art direction are all decently conceived, every aspect dotted with pleasant surprises that transcend the otherwise pedestrian design (one aspect that is consistently spectacular are boss fights). If there are any serious complaints then they are the sidequests–there are far too many (often mundane), but even here you might find a sprinkling of that magic which has blessed such an unevenly quirky game, and they are optional after all…

If there is one area that Nier performs exceptionally exemplary in execution beyond exemption and expectations it must be the voice acting. Nier, Kaine, and especially Weiss’s VAs *owned* (made personal, not beat down awesomely) their roles. The only main character’s voice I imagined should be better in Japanese is Yona’s. Emil’s was surprisingly not annoying and cloying like I’d thought it’d be. More often than not they were all so natural they breathed believability into the awkward lines and the ham-handed moments when the writing fell through, and the humorous banter never felt forced (as it does in countless JRPGs). I enjoyed the music as well, though I’m not sure if it’s memorable because it’s often (strikingly) beautiful, or if it’s (startlingly) repetitive. Perhaps it’s both.

As for the tale itself–it’s arguably the most intriguing and demanding part of this game. Completing every sidequest that was asked of me (except the pink moonflower seeds) diluted my clarity on the narrative, which was already partial in its unfolding. Thus when the game concluded I came away with a drought for answers, some which I had to discover by retracing the steps, others which I knew were not in the game. The unusual premise and the characters were begging to be explored, so soon my curiosity got the better of me. I did some internet sleuthing and soon I came upon “Grimoire Nier”, a translated document floating around that was once swag for the Japanese only Nier Replicant. Containing the complete backstory, lore, history and creator explanations for the world of Nier, it was to me, be far more fascinating than the entirety of the game. Shame that largely none of this rich content is in the actual product, but I’m glad it exists and complements my experience with Nier.

All in all, Nier is definitely worth a play through (and a half). It’s an entertaining ride, if not for the weird and wacky characters you encounter then for the mysterious, incredibly realized universe you can only glimpse from the game.

EDIT: Thanks Aoshi00 who tipped me over the fence on buying this game.

    • SolidusSnake

There’s a face I haven’t seen in awhile. Good to hear from you, and nice write up on Nier. I really need to play that one when I get a chance, although handhelds are more my speed nowadays.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Thanks! Ah I wish I could get back to handhelds but I don’t think that’s happening any time soon…

    • Code

rar , it’s you +o+! Just the other week people were all like “Where’s Yusaku Matsuda been, I hope he comes back someday TmT” and now your suddenly back, hooray >ww<; But yeah! rar, if you want add me sometime, on whatever you got, codemakura's the tag!

Personally Nier for me was the perfect example of a game that's better then the sum of it's part, whenever I individually looked at one element of the game (outside of voice acting/characters and music both of which were incredibly strong) it always felt a little weak. But when you play the game and experience all the elements together you end up with a really well rounded and solid game.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Hey what’s up! Yea I’m sorting things out but I should be able to post here again… at some frequency. I’ll add you to my PSN, mine’s JinFei3 btw (for anyone else who cares as well).

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

YUSAKU!! You’re finally back <3 And with a Nier review, no less. So good to see you =D

And… I hope things work out in your life (if that makes sense).

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Hey, good to see you too! …And things are working out, albeit slowly. But on here is where I forget my troubles, friend. So let us eat, drink, and discuss games again! XD

Uhm, I guess I should join. Don’t expect me to give high marks to any games though. Pretty much the only games that I find deserving of a 9 are Half-Life and… well, that’s it.
