Japan Has Over 600 Classic Games On PlayStation Network

By Spencer . February 23, 2011 . 12:08am

imageThe library of downloadable PsOne games in Japan is humongous. Sony Computer Entertainment announced there are over 600 titles in the Game Archives section on PlayStation Network. TurboGrafx-16 games and SNK’s online enabled NeoGeo ROMs account for part of that number, but the bulk are PsOne titles.

Our collection in North America is… considerably smaller, but growing thanks to MonkeyPaw’s digital imports, the occasional Squaresoft classic, and the upcoming Sega Genesis titles.

Read more stories about & & & & on Siliconera.

  • Oh, I thought this was for PSone Classics. Still though, North America has a pretty small selection of good PSone Classics…

  • I would be curious to know how that stacks against the Virtual Console on Wii in Japan.

  • Thank you, MonkeyPaw. I knew I could count on you!

  • Zero_Destiny

I’m so Jealous. But our PSN is doing Okay. We got some greats like GRANDIA, Wild Arms 1/2, Arc the Lad 1/2/3. Now I just have my fingers cross that SE will keep paying attention to us and release some games like Chrono Cross and Parasite Eve. Also gotta keep prayin’ so that we get Suikoden II in the US. Friggin’ game has eluded me for years. It’s just TOO expensive. :( Come on Konami just throw us a bone and release it. Please!!!

  • FlamingSausage

Yeah, and the EU PSN is just the ulcer of all three regions.

    • Zero_Destiny

Not sure if you know or not but you can make a North American PSN account and download all the ps1 games we get. You just need to import the US PSN cards. We were discussing it on the last XenoGears post. You might want to check it out. I know it sucks either way and theirs still the question of importing cards and stuff but I hope it helps a little.
Read Gelsa’s comments he/she explains everything you need to do and he/she does this to play US games in Europe. Best luck.

      • Regardless we still would like the EU PSN store to have a lot more titles.

        • Zero_Destiny

True that. I can’t blame anyone for wanting stuff like that. More titles the better.

  • Feynman

The biggest tragedy of the US PSN is the total lack of Suikoden 2. Konami deigned to release the first game on PSN, but it’s little more than an appetizer for the sequel, which is amongst the best jRPGs ever made, sooooo… why the hell didn’t Konami give us a PSN release of that title as well?

Of course, the US PSN (on the PSone Classics front) is pretty anemic in the first place, and I’ve always wondered why. Does Sony of America have a different set of standards for PSN releases? Are there licensing issues? Are there basic profitability issues? Are the companies involved on the US side just plain lazy? It’s a mystery!

The same applies to the EU PSN as well, of course. Europe has it even worse!

    • Yui

I don’t know about the US, but they probably face similar issues except about a wider variety of games, seeing as they have more to choose from (NTSC over PAL and whatnot). And yeah, we do have it worse, but at least we can leech off you Americans, right? ;P

      I totally agree with you on that, though! I’ve been buying up my American PSN Classics lately and the fact that Suikoden I is there, but not Suikoden II, really gets my goat. And no Threads of Fate yet, either! ;_;

      • Exkaiser

But Threads of Fate is at least confirmed, as is Vagrant Story.

        • Yui

Tru dat! Certainly a blessing. Nonetheless, as a consumer in possession of capital, I have the inalienable right not to be happy with anything, and I intend to use it repeatedly, often, without concern for anyone else. :D

        • M’iau M’iaut

Mint is truly one of the most calm, benevolent and proper young ladies in all of VG history.

        • Yui

This comment is the best comment ever. I totally agree. :D

EDIT: Ah, don’t worry! I’ve been unbanned. I don’t know why I was ever banned, but…it’s probably a Lunch problem. XD

          • Zero_Destiny

You’ve been what? My world’s turned upside down. Hope you can fix it. I’m on it.

          • Yui

            Haha, thanks, man, but don’t worry, they just overturned it now, and I’m hoping to get a response to the threatening emails I sent some time today. I don’t have a clue why, but…ugh. Who knows? ;_;

          • Yui

            I’ve been flagged for abusive behaviour again. You know what? I just…I give up. ;_;

          • Zero_Destiny

@Yui Argh LUNCH is nothing but jerks!!!!! There the abusive ones in this realtionship!!!!! Treating Yui-chan like this!!!! Seriously make one positive remake about Final Fantasy XIII and they bring down the whip. Don’t give-up though Yui-chan. Who knows maybe they’re confusing you for Sawada :D

          • Yui

            About your comment on Lunch, I’m not back! I can answer questions, but I can’t post comments. It sucks. ;_;

      • PrinceHeir

im actually surprised that the PS1 games are not in the 1,000’s but then again i don’t know how many PS1 games that have been produced(counting all regions EU,US,JP)

yes we definitely need more PS1 Classic games like Suikoden, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Chrono Cross, :P

i think we just need to wait for better versions of FFV and FFVI on NGP instead of the vanilla versions(Updated sprites FTW)

does PSN JP even have a MSX emulator? i know the Wii in JP does what about PSN? would love to play the original MG games before the eventually remake(you know they’ll do it :P)

        • Yui

          So am I! According to this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Playstation_games), the PSX has more than 2400 games, so it must be much more difficult to acquire lease to use them than we give credit for. I feel for Sony, now. ;_;

I would kill for a re-release of Breath of Fire IV in the West, no word of a lie. My copy is ooooooold. XD

Yes! The NGP should be good for this sort of thing. For there to finally be a platform on which I can force myself through the slog that is FFVI would make me happy indeed. :D

I don’t really know. I haven’t seen any MSX games on the JP PSN store…though I can’t read kanji, katakana, or hiragana, so I can’t really comment. XD What I do know is that (though you’re right, they will eventually do a remake ;P) if you’re willing to shell out the cash, you can play updated rereleases of MG1 and MG2 on the Subsistence edition of Metal Gear Solid 3. I had it, and I totally recommend it! ;D

          • PrinceHeir

            wow 2,400? O_O

didn’t not know that though im pretty sure the PS2 has at least 15,000 games(counting JP which has tons of VN, Shumps and doujin games)

yes this will definitely help sales of NGP :)

ohhh yeah i have it though the only problem is that i forgot to bring it with me when i came here in the states. i haven’t gone back at home since feb 28, 2008(it’s almost 3 years now huh?) i do plan to go home and bring some of my collection. arghh i miss my subsistence version though at least i have the essential collection(but it doesn’t include the 2nd disc that contains the 2 MSX games)

Sony should definitely put a MSX catalogue on PSN ^^

          • Yui

I know! It feels like so many. I’d be shocked if I could name 100 PSX games I’ve played. XD The PS2 was a much bigger console, though, with a much longer life. Like the Xbox 360 to the original Xbox, only…you know. The PS2, the best console ever made. :D

You should go home, man. If not for other possible reasons, then to pick up Subsistence, because how can you live without Snake Vs. Monkey?! :D 3 years is a long time not to go home, man. :( (What do you have in your collection? :D Also, essential collection? What’s that about?)

But besides MG and MG2, and maybe Snake’s Revenge, what MSX games would you play? :D

          • Zero_Destiny

Wow Prince it’s been three years huh? That sucks, I’ve moved like 4 or 5 times but that was moving and taking all your stuff with you. Must be even more crappy to have to leave stuff behind. I feel for you. I do hope the 3DS/NGP ends up getting more obscure systems like the MSX and Vic20, and Atari games. It’s sad that they get so little love. And WE NEED more N64 and TubroGrapix games too. Come on we have yet to see the really good stuff!!! Also downloaded XenoGears last night and had my mind was BLOWN!!!!!!! Oh man it was great, the fighting was fun, the story was simply awesome so far (2 hours in) and when you finally hop inside a mech(quite literally too) the mech Combat is just amazing!!!!! The best I can compare it to is Chrono Cross meets Mecha anime meets my Philosophy class. :P So putting more hours into it. You HAVE to get it when you got a spare $10 on the PSN.

          • PrinceHeir

ehh would love to but due my parents are scared that when the paper get’s approved and im not here i might not be able to go back and will have to wait for another one in my countryside instead but i keep telling them that usually the paper we’re waiting are coming 10 years within stay. so i can actually go outside of the country without worrying about the paper. but they won’t listen :|

the essential collection is basically MGS1(PSX version) MGS2(Subsistence) and MGS3(Subsistence but no Disk 2)

well i would like to play snatcher and policenauts :)

wow i can’t believe you managed to get used to it. i don’t like moving several times :

yup2 hopefully Sony should sort this out :)

          • Zero_Destiny

@Prince Well the last move I had like three years ago was the best because I atcually moved back to my hometown and got to hang out with all my old friends and graduate with the kids I went to school with in elementary and most of middle. You never really “get used” to moving but eventually you won’t even realize it. There’s nothing you can really do about it though, you gotta find work so you gotta move some times. :( BACK ON TOPIC I really do hope the 3SD and NGP will give us a big selection of titles to choice from. I’m still so excited about how the 3DS will play Gameboy games thru it’s version of the VC. I really hope Sony can deliver with something similar.

  • skymap

We just got Xenogears. Everythings going to be ok.

  • Guest

Japan still needs to put up the PC Engine CD games though. I wouldnt mind playing Battle Heat fighting game or Zero 4 Champ drag racing RPG

  • Jellybit

In case anyone is curious, the US has 132 PS1 games on the PSN store. I just checked.

  • Brave Fencer Musashi, Einhänder, Ehrgeiz, Fear Effect 1 & 2, Medievil 2, Megaman X3 / X4 / Legends 1 & 2/ Battle & Chase, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne T.T , Omega Boost, Parasite Eve 1 & 2…. I don´t know if all of those are in the japanese PSN, but maybe one day i will purchase these games from the US PSN..one day

    • Zero_Destiny

I want Chrono Cross, Star Ocean: The Second Story, Valkyrie Profile, SaGa Frontier 1, SaGa Frontier 2, Torneko: The Last Hope, The Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden II!!!!!!, Breath of Fire III, Breath of Fire IV, Thousand Arms, PERSONA 1 (ghetto Americanization and all), PERSONA 2, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny II(Eternia), and many more. :D

      • PrinceHeir

fully agree with you list Zero-kun :P

though i think Persona 1 and 2, Star Ocean, Valkyria Profile doesn’t need a PSN release since the there’s already a more enhanced and better versions on PSP(they actually need to put those on PSN instead) but then again playing the original version is always good(unless the translations are wonky like Persona)

oh god playing The Legend of Dragoon on PS3 would be a blast O_O

        • M’iau M’iaut

For shiiits and giggles, it would be fun for new the the niche folks to see how much we had to battle with PS1 ‘localizations’. SO2 especially, these newbies need to have their ears bleed too!

          • Zero_Destiny

CLAUDE THE ENEMY!!! RENA WHAT THE BACK??!! Enough said. ;)
And you can’t forget all the emotion the actors had in their roles. lol I’m such an @ss today :D

          • M’iau M’iaut

I remember stories of people spending HOURS doing that slime trick. As I recall it worked for ridiculous exp because the exp was based upon the level you started the fight with.

Playing the PS1 version would show some of the localization differences. Like the names for Precis’ bobots. Gawd that girl was genki annoying.

          • Zero_Destiny

@M’iau M’iaut lol The slime trick FTW!!! I loved Precis, she was great, and Ashton too but Dias, man what an @sshole!!!! Then again I might just think that because I was a kid when I played and always wanted him to join my party (but I would never play as chick back then so no Dias for me) thus I hate him. lol

      • M’iau M’iaut

Don’t forget Koudelka! That’s another I’d double dip on.

And perhaps someone can help Victorique-san. Koudelka being the first part of the canon Shadow Hearts arc is well known. But I recall there is another (completely unrelated) title that takes place in the same multiverse, can anyone recall which one?

        • Zero_Destiny

The only Shadow Hearts I ever played was the last one that takes place in America and I never knew about Koudelka until a couple years ago can’t help sorry. :( BUT I would play it on the PSN any day of the week always said someone should combo the survival horror with RPG genres, I’m atcually surprised STING hasn’t done it yet. Maybe that’ll be the next Dept. Heaven game. lol

    • PrinceHeir

well i think they just need to rerelease Megaman Anniversary Collection(just so i can play 1-8 alongside 9 and 10) and Megaman X Collection since it’s the best version that includes the first six X games, only downside is the 3 save slot. i mean really? i remember X5 and X6 on PS1 getting having at least 6-8 slots and the memory card is not even a MB O_O

oh god Parasite Eve 1 and 2(to commemorate the release of T3B) as well as Legends 1 and 2, Medievil 2 and Fear Effect damn it sony X_X

  • Yeah be grateful US citizens, the EU PSN sucks ! I think we have MGS, Crash Bandicoot 3 (or 2 & 3 ?), FF VII / FF VIII / FFIX, Vagrant Story and… That’s it ! :( No Suikoden, no Xenogears… Some love would be nice !

    • sambuque

      We got Kula World too.

  • Probably half of those classics are niche titles that never came here anyway. What I’m disappointed about our library is the lack of integrity to convert as many classics as possible. We have Gex 1, Gex 3, but no 2. And where’s Breath of Fire III and IV; Final Fantasy Anthologies? :/

  • Advent_Andaryu

This is pathetic. Why don’t we have those games on the North American PSN? I bet nearly every single one of them already has an English version, all they gotta do is port it to PSN… Such an easy way to make money AND to increase the potential of the PS3.

But they chose not to. This is why I’ve been leaning more towards Microsoft (360) lately and stepping farther and farther away from Nintendo and Sony.

  • sony needs to just ditch the regions altogether, let everyone be able to buy every game

we can already buy from different regions we just have to jump through hoops we shouldnt have to

  • PSN JP is the RPG paradise. I want to learn japanese!!! :(

    • Yu_TheKing

Ikr. Seems like they get the absolute best while get sloppy seconds (IMO)

Still waiting for NA versions of: Ehrgeiz, Legends of Dragoon, PE 1 & 2 to name a few.

  • Tokyo Guy

It’s curious how Dragon Quest 7 is completely absent from the list, despite the fact that SquareEnix knows very well how successful it would be.

    • Joanna

Possible remake/port incoming? It would make sense that way. Why put it up on PSN for 10$ when you can port it and charge at least 40$.
