Deus Ex: Human Revolution Pokes Fun At Final Fantasy

By Spencer . March 1, 2011 . 2:46pm

ff27a I’m not sure if this reference will be in the final game, but the build of Deus Ex: Human Revolution I played had a little Final Fantasy joke.

One of the rooms in Sarif Industries has a Final Fantasy XXVII poster on the wall. Yes, that’s "27." The poster had a stern gothic lolita female character with long brown hair and a flowery headband. Right above the XXVII you could see Square Enix’s logo on the poster. Deus Ex: Human Revolution takes place in the year 2027, so I suppose the poster is a reference to Deus Ex too. To the left, there was a Blade of Shintaro poster with a motorcycle that looks just like the lightcycles from Tron.

It appears Square Enix gave Eidos Montreal the greenlight to poke fun at the future and their company. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time a self-depreciating joke appeared in a Square Enix game.

This would be funnier… if Deus Ex wasn’t made by Square Enix.

Ah well, it’s nice to see SE not be overly serious about everything lol. This is like the time when it was announced that a broken and worn building of SE would appear in 3rd b-day. Which one is it SE?! Dead or Alive?!?!!?

Well, only published really. Still kind of funny, akin to TV shows making jokes about the network they’re on (Family Guy, Futurama, etc. taking shots at FOX).

      • PrinceHeir

well actually Square’s Visual Work did the CG sequences so they did some work :P

i just can’t wait for this, probably one of my most anticipated games this year along with No More Heroes Paradise, Dark Souls, Catherine and The Last Guardian :D

Just yesterday I was thinking about the tomb in FFI,lol.

I honestly believe that we’re going to make it to that number. I think that this franchise will never die, but it’s just going to be something entirely different by the time it hits 20.

FF20 will be an FPS starring an emo anti-hero who has the power to destroy the world, but decides to save it instead. Your party will consist of a chick who has every psychological illness known to man, but still bubbly and cheerful because she has to hide her terrible secret past. She’s also your gun.

      I won’t lie – I would play that game. :D

(Being a sheep is fun! :P)

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

No you won’t… Your great, great grandson will. If he’s lucky to live that long.

    • tr1gun1212

That game sounds amazing – I would play for sure.

      • kupomogli

Aside from being first person and having a girl as an ally who’s your gun, I’m sure you already have. Unless you haven’t played Dirge of Cerberus.

    • Bakuryukun

      This game sounds like fun.

  • darkfox1

The Series is anything but final and thats awesome

  • MisterDandylion

    Soooo….. It’s a self-referential joke because I mean…. they are made by the same compaƱy…..?

    ………………………

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA Sorry I can’t pretend to be old, stubborn and grumpy :) IT was a pretty good joke xD

FF27 by 2027? I’d be surprised if they manage to get FF20 out before then!

    • AnimusVox

2027 is when we’ll have a demo for Versus XIII and the game won’t be released for another 10 years after that.

        Oh so true.

not much of a gag when you think about it. At the rate squeenix turns over FF titles they might not have even hit 18 but 2027.

There will never be a more appropriate time to pull out this video:

It was originally on Newgrounds, but I figured a youtube link is more accessible.
(remember, this was made in the PS2 era, way before current gen)

I remember watching this video. You can’t really help but think it’s not too far from the truth. Gaming really is starting to suck.

      They already got something right.

Devil May Cry 4: Who Wrote This Crap. Yup. Right on the mark and didn’t even know it.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

It is kind of shocking, really…

And the depiction of Snake in that video is eerily accurate of MGS 4. Except in that video it’s MGS 5. Reality beat the parody one game earlier to making Snake a dying old man!

      • Bakuryukun

If you think gaming is starting to suck, your playing the wrong games.

Erm…hate to break it to you Siliconera but this isn’t a joke. This is Square Enix’s 16 year campaign to promote Final Fantasy XXVII and it’s started with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Pre-orders will be happening soon.
