Scenes From Space Channel 5’s Style Guide

By Spencer . March 1, 2011 . 10:32am

During an indie game developer panel, Jake Kazdal from Haunted Temple reflected about his work at United Game Artists, the Sega owned studio behind Rez and Space Channel 5. Kazdal, who was an artist on both titles, shared parts of Sega’s style guide for Space Channel 5.

Sega created the document before Kazdal joined the Space Channel 5 team. You can see influences from 2001: A Space Odyssey above and below an actress who inspired the game’s lead character. Perhaps, the neatest addition is alternate artwork for Ulala who looks like she stepped out of Aeon Flux.

Oh wow, badass >w< I LOVE these kind of things where the explore/break down the creative process of everything that went into a creation. I really like this notion too because Space Channel 5 has taken 2001 as it’s inspiration with some of it’s art direction but at the same time it resulted in something that is so light hearted, colorful, and bubbly >w<'

  • Now I’m really sad I missed this! I noticed Jake (great guy, btw) was talking at a panel right as it was starting, and I was already locked into another session. :(

Ulala looks so angry! (But then again, she dances all the time).
