Devil Survivor 2 Coming To Nintendo DS With All New Characters

By Spencer . March 22, 2011 . 6:38pm

image While the Nintendo 3DS is getting an expanded port of Devil Survivor, Atlus is developing Devil Survivor 2 for the plain old Nintendo DS.

Suddenly, mysterious invaders called the Septentrion arrive in Japan and begin attacking the country on a Sunday. To fight back, the heroes in Devil Survivor 2 signed a pact with the devil to become the 13 devil messengers. The Septentrion show up at least once a day and you have a time limit of seven days to defeat them.

The protagonist (center) is a third year high school student from a metropolitan area. He got involved with the devil messenger group by accident while returning from a mock exam session. When he awoke he became one of the devil messengers. Io (right) is a classmate at the protagonist’s school. As an honors student, Io has brains and beauty. She’s said to be the dream girl for many young men. Daichi (left) is also from the protagonist’s school and he’s a childhood friend. He’s a deep thinker even though he has a habit of making light of the harsh situation.

Devil Survivor 2, much like Devi Survivor before it, uses a strategy RPG meets command battle system. Demon auctions, a place where you can bid for new allies, return as well. There’s a new destiny system that involves the protagonist’s choices and other characters, but the scan is too blurry to make out here.

Japan gets Devil Survivor 2 this summer.

  • Well, Day 1 baby day 1!!! This time, I can get it right when it releases (if it comes to CONUS), and hopefully we will get an OVERCLOCKED too. I dont see that it says there is VA.

  • Awesome!!!, and i already see the deal here…. I will be waiting for 3DS port :), that is, if i can hold that much D:

  • Why aren’t they developping it for 3DS?

Anyways, Yay~ More Shin Megami Tensei!

    • I guess to take advantage of the established base of DS’s (or they caught it at a weird point in development), maybe an Overclocked version is forthcoming?

  • Holy, who cares if it is for the DS, Devil Survivor 2 is bound to be great awesome sh**!! :D

    • I care because if they port it later for the 3DS, i will feel bad for getting it for the DS one D: …

Somehow, i feel i just went throught that…. With that game… ermm…Devil something, survivor something, this game strangely reminds me of it, for DS, cant remember the name… ;D (and a “;D” not of a simple wink, …a SUPER wink!)

      • Suicunesol

No need to port something that can already be played on a 3DS. :o

        • Zero_Destiny

          Like the First game? lol

          • kylehyde

      • Saraneth

Just get the DS version first and play it once and then do the other routes on the 3DS version if/when it comes out.

      • You had Devil Summoner 1 and 2 also. Anyway, Devil Survivor is a very accurate and appropriate name for the whole setting. Here’s a great link (shoud be update though) that shows the SMT wolrd at large.

    • Testsubject909

Personally. I care if it goes on the DS.

Mainly because I have no plans of getting the 3DS anytime soon and I for one really enjoyed Devil Survivor. I don’t care if they’ll eventually make a Devil Survivor 2 Overclocked. Don’t give a damn about it.

And anyhow, Devil Survivor 2 on the DS also means it has a higher chance of doing well. There’s an incredibly large user base for the DS which means it can be sold to a larger amount of people.

      • Also remember that when DS came here to the US it broke Atlus expectations for how well it sold so getting the sequel here is a no brainer.

        • Saraneth

I would have preferred it coming out on both the DS and the 3DS, but any sequel is definitely welcome. Devil Survivor was one of my favorite RPGs on a system with some of the best rpgs ever. Are they going to port it to the 3ds later?

    • Zero_Destiny

I atcually think it’s a clever move on Atlus’ part to release two Devil Survivors on the DS then wait to release Devil Survivor 3 for the 3DS!!!!! I can see it now Shin Megami Tensei 3 Devil Survivors for the 3DS. All the while the port over of the first game will get newer fans on the 3DS interested in Devil Survivor games who missed them on the DS. I think that would be epic!!!!! XD

      • alundra311

Maybe it would be titled “The 3rd Devil Survivor”. Oh, wait. That just sounds like it could be a resident evil game/spin-off/minigame.

        • Ren

The 3rd Birthday came to my head when I read that.

      • Ren

There’s only one problem with what you said: Devil Survivor is now it’s own franchise in japan, like the Persona series. Look at the full scan
See, no Megami Ibunroku on the title like the previous game, the same thing that happened with the Persona series after the first game. Of course, Atlus is still going to bring the game as SMTDS2 and a potential third one as SMT3DS, but now you lost the original credibility in your pun. Also, SMT3DS has the natural problem of being naturally interpreted as Shin Megami Tensei 3: Devil Survivor, so 3Devil Survivor works better as a title

        • Zero_Destiny

          >_< Ren you and you're knowledge always ruins my fun. lol Oh well like you said the American release (and yeah if I can be so bold I believe it WILL get one) will put the SMT label so I'll hold true to that and use it defend my statement. lol I don't think people will confuses it for SMT 3 though. I don't know why but I don't think they will. lol Oh I know call it SMT: 3-Devil Survivors. :) Yup there we go the dash will fix everything. *pats himself on the back for a job well done* lol That's cool that the Devil Survivor is now a series. That makes me want to get Devil Survivor 3DS port even more. Also the pic didn't link up not even in the hyperlink. lol No biggie though I'll take your word for it. :)

          • Ren

I used to wonder why you americans always use the wrong your, but then I remembered at suck even more on my mother language. Makes me feel dumb when talking with Doomrider with his perfect European Portuguese. Good to know I’m knowledge.

I got lazy and didn’t reupload the image, here’s it

A dash, hmm… SMT3-DS… yeah, seems like Nocturne met its match.

          • Zero_Destiny

lol Oh Ren. You’ll always get a laugh out of me. And no the “your” wasn’t an American thing it was me staying up until almost 3 in the morning and stupidly using the wrong “your”. lol My bad. Just to clarify (but you seem knowledge enough in the language so I’m probably just ranting lol) YOUR = usually used to denote property/nouns (there are some more nuances like explaing future actions [example your going home] but I don’t feel like getting into that), You’re = the shorting of the words YOU and ARE. It’s like Don’t and Can’t. lol Nice pic. Is that A chessboard I see under the main chara. Hhmm symbolism? Maybe how their pawns to demons or maybe because the game’s story is one big chess match or maybe because the game is a tactics game. Or maybe it’s just some plaid thing and I’m rambling. lol Or it could be a playing card. Maybe even the back of a tarot card

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

“perfect European Portuguese” xD What’re you talking about, Brazilian Portuguese is its own language! Or its own version of another language…

            … Maybe.

            … I guess!

          • One of the biggest isshus I have is when people use the wrong “your” and it is a problem as well when even news sites and other media sites make the same error, even my professors do it too.

If one is speaking perfectly then they dont even sound the same…

          • irzbos

How about Tsuna’s spelling of the word “issues”. I hope the error is purposeful, else you can’t really complain about other peoples spelling/grammatical errors.

Only word that annoys me is “weird”. People will yell at me when I correct them saying “”i” before “e” accept after “c” idiot.” Sorry, but English is hard to learn because we break our own rules whenever we feel like it and pretty much no rule in our language is an absolute.

        • Interesting scan. As true as that may be, I think Atlus USA will still slap that SMT name on DS2, since that’s what they’ve been doing and probably it’s better for the SMT franchise + sub franchise. Nothing wrong with it, I suppose as long as people recognises that it’s a quality game.

          • Shadow_Raskolnik

There’s no doubt that this game will have the SMT logo slapped on it if it is released here. But as you said there’s nothing wrong with that, it simply gives the title more of a brand recognition for the fans.

    • Joanna

I care, mainly because I’m worried if we’ll get it. Games released for the previous system after a successor is out have a really low chance of making it over, but maybe Atlus will prove me wrong (I really hope so~). But if we do get it, yeah I’m with you, who cares if it’s for DS, it’s still going to be great~

  • Guest

Hope they add an easy mode for losers like me. This “signed a pact with the devil” has me really excited for this game. =)

I still can’t believed people are surprised. It’s not like DS development was going to suddenly stop. Though I’m broke so by the time I get this the inevitable 3DS support will be out or announced. XD

    • PurpleDoom

I think what was more surprising about it isn’t that it’s a DS game coming out after the 3DS launch as it is that it’s a DS game in a series that seems to have “moved up” to 3DS. Devil Survivor Overclocked as well as two other SMT games have been confirmed for 3DS, but this is the first DS game announced since Strange Journey. It really is a bit off-putting.

      • Guest

Good point. I still think they’ll sell more on DS though. I don’t think the people who enjoy these niche games are rushing out to buy the new hardware. DS:O ain’t costing much and they can reach some new people. Developing DS2 for 3DS would likely limit their sales. Then again it might make some of these people buy a 3DS. Bah, Im contradicting myself. Anyways Im fine with DS2 on DS.

        • PurpleDoom

As am I. I can’t say I wasn’t surprised at the choice of platform, but, you know, more SMT is always a good thing.

  • ; 3 ; Ryoji has been reincarnated!….hehe.
    I can’t wait for this~

  • kylehyde

    Permission for say: WTF?

Don’t get my wrong, this for me are areally good news, I love DS, however I wanted to see the first Atlus original proposal for the 3DS, anyway I hope that it turns as good as the first one and then I’ll be more happy, and for God sakes no more characters like yuzu.

    • …I will never understand why Yuzu inspires such irrational hatred in the fanbase. I mean, this is probably going to be considered flame-baiting or trying to incite a flame war, but… I just don’t get it. I’ve seen it explained to me several times, but… I don’t know, they just don’t match up with my experience with the game.

Admittedly, I would have been happier if they didn’t do what they did with her route (which I am not mentioning because of spoilers), but I don’t think it’s something to blame on her as a character.

      • I agree. I can understand why people wouldn’t like Yuzu, because she’s your stereotypical weak female lead. But I felt like she was there for a reason, and that she plays her role well. People panic.

I also like what they did with her route as well. It’s entirely understandable why people would choose that route, and they also hinted many times that it would end the way it did. It’s definitely not the best ending there is, but it’s supposed to be one of many.

Also, how could you hate Yuzu’s magic nuke abilities?

        • SolidusSnake

Exactly, of course people are going to panic in a crisis. Having a character like that in your party gives the game a sense of reality and adds to the horror, because you know plenty of people who would act just like Yuzu in the same situation. The only thing I REALLY hated about her was her awful style of communication in the emails she sent you. That’s also realistic but it’s the bad kind of realistic :p

          • kylehyde

One thing is react with panic, but another is act like an hysteric. Also I prefer my characters enjoyable than realistic.

        • kylehyde

Mari, Midori and Amane already can replace her in the magic area very well and many times with more extraordinary results

          • It’s true. I used Midori at every opportunity. <3

      • kylehyde

Her ending has nothing to do, actually it was really understable that she wanted to scape, in fact is more logical tryin to scape than taming demons (but is a videogame, the logic has nothing to do with this world), however she was annoying as hell. But anyway is just matter of tastes, many people don’t liked Midori and I loved her character.

  • A yellow scarf? Oh damn, in an SMT game these days, that can mean NOTHING GOOD.

    Can’t wait for this.

    • Testsubject909

Just believe he’s a Kamen Rider, it’ll make you feel better.

      • Zero_Destiny

Or Strider!!!!! Except it’s not yellow it’s red.
Or Jiro since we’re on the matter of Red Scares
        Or Ash from Phantom Brave.
The fact of the matter is that scarves are just awesome and that’s why they have their trope. :)

        • OH MY GOD, NOT TVTRO-

*spends the next 5 hours reading it*

          • Zero_Destiny

Muwahahahahahaha My plan to waste everyone’s time worked. :)

        • DanteJones

Don’t really check out Tvtropes, but if YouTube had a “you wasted this much of your life watching these videos” counter, I’d be pretty depressed.

        • Guest

          Or Hotsuma from Shinobi PS2

    • Yellow scarf reminds me of Ryouji from P3…he’s not that bad though…

  • Zero_Destiny

From what I know about the first Devil Survivor the story doesn’t sound as good. Aliens invading? Or since it’s MegaTen maybe Demons? Seems Meh when compared to “OMG we gotta escape this demon infested city that’s gonna get bombed soon!!!” Still interested. Would gladly buy it when it comes out. I guess Strange Journey just spoiled me in the story department though. :(

    • raymk

Your name seems familiar for some reason. I don’t know if i’ve seen you on neogaf or some other gaming site ;/

      • Zero_Destiny

No sorry :P I use to make RPG’s with RPG maker with this name but other than that I would only use this name for all my stuff like my DS and PSN accounts I have never used it any where else before. Was mostly a lurker before coming to this site. Someone else maybe? Oh but I am on Bounce a lot. But a lot of the other users on there too. :)

    • Ren

It’s Atlus, they will blow everything out of proportions on day 3 or 4 then probably go with the apocalypse on the last days. Just because there’s less pressure doesn’t mean the story will be weaker, we still don’t know the actual stakes.

Oh, remember to go play P4. You have no excuses for not doing so. At least none that I will accept.

      • Zero_Destiny

lol I will I will. That’s a promise. I thought I already told you about that on Bounce though. :) Gotta get it soon, times running out it’s almost April. If I can’t find it at my local Game stores I’ll probally hit up Amazon this or next weekend. Reading some comments since I made that one I see that we have Mohiro Kitoh working on the game in some capacity so that should mean it’ll be great and insane. :) Anyways I just like it when pressure there from the get go and you’re afraid for your life. Like in Strange Journey. Oh boy games like those can be a real ride. I look for stuff like that out of MegaTen. I’m sure an invasion story can put on the pressure though.

        • Ren

This game should have been named Bokura no Devil Survivor. I wonder what they will mix on the next game. I hope it’s either Evangelion or Madoka. For some reason, auctioning and fusing mechas and magical girls together sounds really fun. Like what I heard someone saying before, if going for mindfuck don’t content yourself with a quickie. That and because I want to watch a mecha transforming sequence. Hmm, Magical Warriors Tranformers… Damn, I think I created a new and very weird otaku fetish.

          • Zero_Destiny

They’ve had that fetish since at least G Gundam probably even before then. lol I don’t know what -Sweden did to Japan but they must of not really liked them. XD

          • Ren

I like to know that some things aren’t just part of my overactive imagination, makes me happier for never having faith on humanity from the start.

Hmm, since you’re so good at finding creepy stuff(I wonder what that says about you -jab- remember me to never ask for your browser history), get me a video of a gundam makeup transformation scene, also so you can make up for the lack of shotas shouting ni-chan.
EDIT: Oh, make sure to sleep before you do that though. I’m probably going to fall asleep at any moment anyway.

          • Zero_Destiny

@Ren I can’t help it if Japan chooses to personify Sweden as a mahou Shojo lol I’m not sure about Ni-San but the pilot of the Dragon Gundam was kinda shota. But he was also 16. :( It’s been a real long time since I watched G Gundam But I could swear Sachi called Domon Bro or something.
            Sweden: []
            China: []

  • MC pops his collar like no other.

Anyway, while the plot sounds kinda simple right now, I trust in Megaten to complicate things until my mind blows up with awesome. I’ll have to seeeeee.~

  • DanteJones

Sweet! I loved the first one, hopefully this one will be just as good if not better. :)

But awww, no headphone-sporting protagonist this time, oh well. XD

  • Yesshua

All right: I have three questions.

Question 1 – How likely is it that this game will be localized to the US? How did the first Devil Survivor do? Hasn’t Atlus been reducing the number of games they localize? Does this have a chance of making it?

Question 2 – Will this also get a 3DS overclock edition? Fool me once Atlus, shame on you. Fool me twice – shame on me. Unless they tell me specifically that there won’t be an Overclock, odds are I’ll hold off. Or try at least.

Question 3 – If I buy Radiant Historia, will that make it more likely that this comes to the US? I mean, it’s another DS JRPG from Atlus. If that sells well, this is more likely to come over, right?

    • I have three answers.

1 – Could go either way. Atlus USA could pass due to the 3DS being out, but they may still be supporting the DS. It’s not something we can really say for sure at this point. It’s another wait and see situation. I think it has a chance, and if it does come out, I’m betting on a Q4 release.

2 – Atlus Japan wouldn’t tell us if this is getting overclocked until well after this is released. They’d pretty much kills sales for this version if they did. Not in their best interest.

3 – Buying Radiant Historia won’t help get this localized. Other than Index Holdings (Atlus), the two games have nothing in common. If RH was a MegaTen title, then sure, but since it’s not, sales won’t influence Atlus’ decision on this one.

Mind you, I’m no authority. This is just how I’m seeing it.

      • Zero_Destiny

@Yesshua I still suggest buying Radiant Historia though because it’s a great game. That is if you can find it.

      • Maybe its a combination of 1 + 2 (with atlus knowing an overclocked of this ds 2 is coming out thereby skipping out on this DS version and just bringing the 3ds version?)

    • PurpleDoom

I don’t know about questions 2 and 3, but the answer to question 1 is likely yes. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think pretty much every SMT title released in the past few years has been localized?

    • Testsubject909

1: Look up what Kid Chainsaw said. But considering how Atlus still released games on the PS2 while the PS3 was going strong, and how there’ll most likely be continued support for the DS despite a new iteration, as not everyone will be shifting from one handheld to the other overnight. There’s a good enough chance we’ll get Devil Survivor 2.

2: Who knows whether or not it’ll get an overclocked version. Personally, I wouldn’t care, nor mind. It’s not the first time I’ve seen an upgraded version of a game, it’s been done countless of times. But what matters is whether or not the first version they gave us is a complete game. Personally, I don’t care about this “Extra content to follow through after a complete game”. Rather then the “Here’s this incomplete game. Want the rest? DLC money please.”

Overclocked is fine in my book. It’s not necessary for my enjoyment of it, I already have the complete story, I might get it for the voice acting and some curiosity about the extra day, but even then, it’s not really a required experience for me.

3: Why not just buy Radiant Historia to enjoy it?

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Oh, the guy who created Narutaru and Bokurano is the one designing the invaders. Expect twisted things, I suppose?

Lucky DS owners. Maybe there will already be an Overclocked version by the time I’m able to get a 3DS.

    • SolidusSnake

Seriously?! The first thing that came to my mind when I read the description was Bokurano. This should be good. :D

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yes sir! From Andriasang: “Staff includes Kenji Ito on sound. Like the original, the main character designs are from Durarara’s Suzuhito Yasuda. Mohiro Kitou is doing the designs for the Septentrion invaders.”

    • Exkaiser

You could still play the DS version on your 3DS!

    • Joanna

Oh now this games NEEDS to be brought over. If we don’t get it, I’m going to be very very disappointed.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

        In Atlus we trust! =D

  • Awesome news! The DS isn’t going down without a fight.

    • Testsubject909

I highly doubt that Nintendo is foolish enough to drop it’s previous iteration cold just because it released a new handheld or console.

Look at Sega Saturn and Sega Genesis. Any console/handheld manufacturer can see what sort of trouble awaits them if they just cut support cold.

      • Well in CONUS I do not see any 1st Party Ninty titles on the horizon for the DS beyond maybe a PKMN Razzmatazz! End of the year or next year.

  • fuzzy_hobo

Huzzah! The clock starts ticking again…

  • Wackoramaco87

Hopefully this makes it out to the West! I would finally have an excuse to finish the game, especially with the 3DS port coming out! =D

Not sure if this was mentioned, but will this be a direct sequel (like I said, I haven’t finished the first yet!) or similar to how Persona 3 and Persona 4 is, with very little actually connecting them?

  • So Overclock on 3DS is being touted as having voice acting and the DS one didn’t…so I am guessing this one won’t have voice acting either.

Here’s hoping they announce a Devil Survivor 2:SUPER OVERCLOCKED for the 3DS before it gets to NA :3

  • lol my love for DRRR!! is making me like the character designs. Can’t wait to see more. >.>b

    • Ren

Then go read Yozakura Quartet, it’s done by the same artist and it’s quite enjoyable, just remember it’s completely different from both Durarara!! and DS.

      • Oh, I know. XD But I’m backlogged on other mangas atm, so Yozakura Quartet’s gonna be awhile before checking it out.

  • SolidusSnake

Yes because making a contract with the devil in order to fight off evil beings always turns out well ( ◕ ‿‿ ◕ )

    • Ren

As long as you don’t have a Madoka or Yuzu to override the angst levels…

    • In Atlus games? Sometimes it does…for a given value of ‘well’ of course.

  • gatotsu911

At first I read the headline and I was like “Huh, that’s pretty cool”, then I read it again and I was like “Wait, what?”

  • Oh wow, #DeSu 2! Talk about unexpected, @AtlusUSA!

    • Zero_Destiny

      lol Clever pun :P

  • irzbos

well this is amazing news for me cuz devil survivor is one of my favorite games. only negative…the bosses in that game kicked my ass so much…it was rlly hard

  • robomomo

    gimmie this game now

  • PrinceHeir

well it could have been awesome if it was 3DS. think about it it could sell really well due to being an early title from the 3DS line. it just doesn’t make sense that they made Overclock on 3DS yet the sequel is on DS? at least the owners of the prequel get to play the game without buying a 3DS.

    • Guest

      bigger userbase bigger userbase

  • Ryoji, Minato, Minako.

    JUST KIDDING of course. :)

  • Pichi

Nice the DS is still kicking in Japan. Hope its treated like the PS2 and last a good while. But, still wary though, as I would like localizers like Atlus to continue to do so.

  • kupomogli

Develop for the DS so you can port it over to the 3DS at a later date. Easy way to guarantee extra sales.

If I can’t get SMT4, I’d rather get Strange Journey 2 than Devil Survivor 2, though.

  • What? Why would they release it for the old DS?

  • The designs, the concept….everything about this so far feels super generic.

  • malek86

A strategy RPG with aliens invading Earth?

I feel like I’ve played that in 1994 already. From this day, I’m just gonna call this game SMT-Com.

  • I read “Septentrion” as “Stepmums” (I was reading really fast okay :( ) Personally that would have been far more scary.

  • kyuketsukimiyu

Yes! This is a very welcome announcement. I am a bit disappointed that this is at least getting a dual release on the 3DS, but will be happy to buy it either way.

  • Exkaiser

    Pretty good news, I guess!

  • MisterDandylion

mmmmm As much as I loved the 1st Devilo Survivor, this looks like quite an improvement :)

    Yay for Atlus! XD

  • ninjaonizuka

I know this will do great :) i love the character designs the one with the yellow scarf reminds me of Ryogi from Persona 3.

  • They look so cool….
