Final Fantasy XI And XIV Service Resumes On March 25

By Spencer . March 22, 2011 . 10:12am

imageAfter the Tohoku earthquake, Square Enix temporarily shut down their online servers for Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XI, and their PlayOnline service. The gate to Eorzea closed on March 13, but will reopen on March 25 at 4:00PM PDT.

To make up for the downtime, Final Fantasy XI players will not be charged any monthly fees during the April billing cycle.

Did you know 11.6% of the power utilized by Square Enix’s Tokyo office is for these servers? To resume operation Square Enix turned off air conditioning and reduced lighting in their offices, which offset their total power so the servers could come back online.

Minor correction, they didn’t say 4:00 p.m. PDT – they just said 4:00. For FFXI and XIV, S-E usually uses 24 hour time. So unless they specifically state p.m. it’s probably safer to assume that it will be 4 in the morning for the US west coast. They sometimes do updates and clock reset events at similarly early hours, so it wouldn’t be an especially unusual time.

And non too surprisingly, at as far as FFXIV is concerned at least, no one will notice…

  • I think it’s 4am PDT. They use the 24/military hours thing for time.. so if it was 4pm it would’ve been listed as 16:00 and not 4:00.

Edit: Oh well, with the return of FFXI on the 25th this gives me time to continue catching up with my manga series before it’s back up.. plus a free day of play on Aion (lol b/c NCSoft is reactivating inactive accounts for the 24th to the 30th).

  • Wooah. It takes that much power? I’m sure they’ll do fine with less air-con at this point, but I hope they don’t push themselves.

Also, March 25th is also when episode 11 of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica airs! Coincidence?

  • They’re going to make FF14 free for another month “because of the down time” in order to entice people to continue/start playing, eh.

I don’t think anybody expected XIV to become pay to play any time in the near future anyway.

XI is the more important one here. Paying customers lost about two weeks worth of service that was already paid for at the beginning of March (S-E bills at the beginning of the month for the upcoming month), so S-E is giving all XI players April for free to make up for the loss.

  • Please square… just stop 14 and use the money, if you gain anything from it, to help japan. Keep 11, but 14 really is going nowhere =/

Actually… They can keep FFIV turned off.

So, if I activated FFXI this weekend, does that mean i’ll get charged for the rest of March but not again when April 1 rolls over? (I always hated their billing on the 1st system)

wow, i didint think it took that much power. x.x thats crazy.

I kinda wana jump back into XI alittle….
