Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City To Reinterpret Events Of Resident Evil 2 And 3

By Ishaan . March 28, 2011 . 7:46am

Capcom have another Resident Evil game in the works, and this one’s quite different from what you might be used to. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a collaboration between Capcom and Vancouver-based studio, Slant 6 Games, who developed SOCOM: Confrontation.

Capcom are calling Operation Raccoon City a “true third-person team-based shooter” that reinterprets some of the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Here’s what they say about the game’s story and setting:

“It is September 1998 and the action centres once more on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak from the Umbrella facility. With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella’s actions. Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.”

Leon Kennedy is confirmed to be making an appearance, but not as a special agent. You’ll see Leon during his younger days as part of the Raccoon City Police Department, and he’ll be on your hit list of targets to eliminate. You’ll also encounter both zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W’s) in Operation Raccoon City.

Additionally, Operation Raccoon City will also include a variety of competitive online multiplayer modes. Capcom have the game scheduled for release this winter. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

I REALLY don’t see why this was necessary. I smell Inafune’s involvement in here somewhere (even though he left the company months ago). It COULD be an interesting diversion, but I’m more excited for The Mercenaries and Revelations

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

If Keiji #Inafune had his way, then this would’ve been an #FPS instead. >.>

      • Guest

Inafune was responsible for the RE Gun Survivor series?

        • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

I don’t know about that, but Gun Survivor is basically a #ResidentEvil take on light gun games, a la House of the Dead by SEGA.

          • Guest

Well the answer is no I was just testing you. Inafune isn’t THAT Western crazy. And he wasn’t involved with the Chronicles series either

          • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

True, but a Japanese company, making an FPS game, is the biggest form of “westernization”, in many western gamers’ eyes.

  • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

Hmm, if I were an #Umbrella soldier in-game, then shouldn’t Nemesis be an ally? Also, I’d love to see Tofu, having an appearance for the lulz.

Do you think that any of the B.O.W.’s are discriminating? I mean, Umbrella dropped Mr. X right in the middle of Raccoon City and I still wouldn’t think it’d be okay to stand side by side with him.

  • http://twitter.com/Ale598 Ale598

AT least this isn’t a numbered title, smart move there.

  • http://twitter.com/IXRoxasXI Rei Fal’Cie Sanchez

    Objection!!!!!
According to my mind the game that REALLY needs reinterpretation is “Devil May Cry 2″!!!

  • http://twitter.com/pipsterfinn Pip Murphy

We’re supposed to off Leon? Sounds like it could be interesting, anyway: the idea of going after human targets in a zombie game seems mad yet fun.

  • Xeahnort

Another Re.Outbreak, uh?. At least I hope capcom do a better job this time.

    • kupomogli

Outbreak and Outbreak 2 are amazing. The only things bad about the games are the load times.

      • Xeahnort

agreed, but the online was a total mess, not to say Capcom Europe had a lot of technical difficulties bringing an online game to PAL territories for file#1

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Never played any of them online, but when I tried the single player of the first Outbreak game, I can honestly say I have never experienced a dumber AI before than my in-game companions.

Yes Leon will be in…boo since we will have to eliminate him.

I guess this and Mercenaries show their true dedication to satisfying the needs of the community who really love and embrace multiplayer. I may look into this one, just hope it the online co-op play is competent.

I really don’t like how many japanese devs are starting to outsource their biggest franchises to western devs. It usually goes wrong, see Silent Hill.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Robborboy Paul ‘Chinny’ Chinn

I found Homecoming a nice departure from the standard Silent Hill formula that was growing stale. And given how terrible Silent Hill 4 was, it was a smart move.

      • vrakanox

Booooo! I loved Silent Hilent 4 but to each their own. I know other people who didn’t like it.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I have to admit, I didn’t like 4 until I played Homecoming, which gave me a whole new appreciation for how bad 4 wasn’t.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Wait a minute. Silent Hill 4 was the one game in the series that shifted the formula and tried something different. If you found the formula stale, you should’ve actually liked 4. Homecoming was nothing more than a bunch of Westerners whose only previous knowledge of the series obviously came from the movie, making a sad attempt at aping that formula you hated so much.

    • Guest

Shattered Memories was great. I don’t see the problem.
Now making RE something it isn’t (a damn squad based shooter) thats where I have a problem.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I don’t mind this so much, as it’s a spin-off title, but yeah, it is a problem when it becomes mainline series entries. Homecoming should’ve never happened. I couldn’t believe what they did to Silent Hill in that one. It was an absolute abomination.

“You’ll see Leon during his younger days as part of the Raccoon City Police Department”

I don’ understand, RE 2 was supposed to be his first & only day in the Police of Raccoon City no ???

    • thebanditking

Your are correct, this is exactly why most fans worry when a series is handed off to a western developer. They have virtually no experience working with the license and try to change established story elements to suit their needs or lack of under standing of the main story arc.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farid-Belkacemi/1073052585 Farid Belkacemi

Mannnn, I wish I was wrong but I’m a huge fan of Leon :) Why do they give their licence if the west dev is not a RE fan ? At least, give it to Platinum Games, they will know what to do..

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Considering how everybody parted ways, I doubt we’ll be seeing Platinum making anything for Capcom for a long while, unfortunately.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Robborboy Paul ‘Chinny’ Chinn

That makes no sense at all. The Western developer is doing exatly that. Developing the game. Capcom has the final say-so in any and all story related things. Hell, they probably have some RE guys over at the studio overseeing it.

        • badmoogle

That’s exactly what their PR will say.;)

      • Guest

        You’re….so damn wrong.

  • Souji Tendou

True-3rd-person-team-based-shooter…? At least I hope the gameplay is as good as RE 4 or 5.

  • thebanditking

“Operation Raccoon City To Reinterpret Events Of Resident Evil 2 And 3″

This concerns me, messing with an established story arc is risky even when making sequels but trying to overwrite two of the most beloved entries in a series is just not a good idea. This is exactly what I was afraid/knew they were going to do with this release. Not going all chicken little just yet but this does not make me excited for this release.

    “Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.)”
They can’t even keep the original team name? For the record (and correct me if I am wrong) but the USS never existed prior to now, Hunk and the division teams he worked for were always called the UBCS.

    • Guest

Not like this will be official canon anyways.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Martin/599807811 Brandon Martin

      I know.
I don’t really understand why they’d want to eliminate Leon during RE2.
After all, he was just a rookie cop whose first workday was after the outbreak.
If he was in STARS like Jill, then I’d be able to understand that.

      • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

Maybe he was framed! By uh… Wesker. It’s always Wesker’s fault. :/

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Are you sure? Hunk and the other members of his squad have a very different uniform from Nikolai and Carlos.

  • PrinceHeir

wait did Hunk’s team really tried to kill Leon, Claire, Ada or even Jill? i remember the team being wiped out in the game. the only thing i saw them is behind the scenes in the umbrella chronicles. not to mention did leon even encountered Hunk’s theme? i don’t remember the game too much(will play it on PSN soon) so yeah im vary wary about this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

There were more than one team sent into Raccoon City. Hunk was in the Alpha team and in one of the Wii Chronicles games, he gets a communication from the dying Delta team. I would assume there’s more than just the two teams.

Although I do have to admit, it doesn’t make sense that they’d try to eliminate Leon, unless it was after he learned everything he learned in RE2, but then they’re cutting it REALLY close to the city getting nuked.

  • BadenBadenPrinny

Sweet, I get to kill Leon

  • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

While it’s tempting to be cynical due to the constant remakes of the Resident Evil series (but heh, wouldn’t be Capcom if they weren’t like this), this does sound like an interesting spin-off. Consider me cautious interested.

  • eliel

resident evil has always been pretty western to me, knowing that western developers r gonna help create the game doesn’t worry me at all. (i did like the coo-oop in rezi 5)

  • http://twitter.com/Misha1302 Misha Ricci

wait hunt leon? there’s no way youd kill him though cause that would stop resident evil 4′s events from happening. causeing a mass disruption in the space time continuum COME ON DOC LETS REV UP THE DELOREAN AND STOP THEM

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

      TIME PARADOX!

  • Blacksofa

Not the Outbreak I was looking for, but at least it’s survival co-op… :

    the U.S.S. Team looks cool

  • xxx128

I am so going to skip any outsourcing titles, be it capcom, konami or namco. Outsourcing just stinks. There was a reason in the first place why these series have been so sucessful.
