Cave Story 3D Hops Onto Nintendo 3DS In June

By Spencer . March 29, 2011 . 1:02pm

CS3DS_Logo_Final_whitebgNicalis and NIS America are giving Cave Story a full remake for the Nintendo 3DS. This version of Cave Story is still a platformer, but the game uses 3D models instead of sprites. I played a tiny bit of it and it was just like Cave Story 2.5D.

When NIS America announced Cave Story 3D, they said the title was on track to be a "launch window" game. We honed in on the date and Cave Story 3D is scheduled to be in stores on June 28.

In addition to 3D graphics, producer Tyrone Rodriguez and creator Daisuke Amaya mentioned to Siliconera in an interview there will be new elements in this version of Cave Story. Amaya pointed out new and old music and Rodriguez said there would be elements from the unreleased Cave Story beta.

I just picked up a 3DS despite my whining about it not being region free and honestly I have been having a blast with it.

So, I honestly can’t wait until some better releases like Cave Story, DOA, and I’m REALLY hoping for a miracle that Tales of the Abyss makes it over once again. I would love to go through that game again on a portable. :)

    • When you play Street Fighter on the 3DS. It’s like going back to the SNES days. I will say this about the region free part. It will play any region DS games. I played Jump Ultimate Stars on it last night.

      • Arcm

Yeah, but the ability to play Japanese or Europeon 3DS games is what I’m more interested in.

Yeah I played Jump last night as well lol

  • I’ve a horrible feeling the 3DS is going to be incredibly frustrating for Euro gamers.

This and SMT:DSO are both lacking any info on a European release and no doubt Bandai Namco are just itching to screw us over with Tales of the Abyss again (You released a PAL version in Australia, it would’ve cost you almost nothing to release it here, even if it was a flop!)

    • I think at least one of those games you won’t have to worry about…

    • Reitsumi

It’s very frustating. Thanks to the region-lock I don’t know if I should buy a 3ds or not. I hope that the NGP doesn’t have Region-lock

      • You could always wait and hope for a third party freeloader-style device?

    • AdamBoy64

Being a Tales fan and an Australian, I can put your fears at rest – there was no PAL release in Australia of ToTA.

I’m not sure if that’s what you meant by your statement, but just in case.

I need to tell my friend about this…

    rar, I love Cave Story, but I’m incredibly put off by the art direction with this omo;

    • BTA

I have to agree with this. I love Cave Story, and I’ll probably end up buying this if only to support Pixel/NISA, but… I hate the 3D models. They look kinda cheap, if that makes sense? I just hope there’s an option for the old art style, whether it’s the original art or the art from the Wii/DSi port.

And… this reminds me… still gotta beat Hell sometime soon. :x

      • Code

        Agreed, maybe it’s just because I used my imagination so much more for the original but these models just aren’t even close to what I’d think of when I think Cave Story. If anything I just find the whole approach to this game going against that grain omo;

    u….ulquiorra? is that you?….

  • BelmontHeir

I will be buying this, yes yes yes.

  • will it include the 2D version. it was extremely well made and it was one of the very few pixelated games that i actually want to play despite its age.

    • MisterFoxInc

Haha. You make it sound so old, though it was made in 2004.

      • xXDGFXx

i’ve actually played old 2D games from around that time. they had a hard time keeping me interested. that, and i never played it till now…

    • I’m kind of thinking not, since you can get that version of the game as a DSiware title.

  • xXDGFXx

Loved the 2D version. I will enjoy the remake.

  • Great to hear. It will be a definite day-one impulse buy for me. (Even though I have the WiiWare version.)

  • Icon

What’s with that boring logo? I have a hard time believing Pixel designed that one. I’d be surprised if he did.

  • alundra311

This game is one reason to get a 3ds. :D

  • Pretty much on my to buy list, since it’s got enough content to justify me playing again.
