Project Dropship – See A Canceled PS3 / X360 Game From Square Enix’s LA Studio

By Spencer . March 29, 2011 . 11:34am

Back in 2008, Square Enix formed a development studio in Los Angeles. Fumiaki Shiraishi, creator of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, was given the task of leading the group.

No games have been released since its formation, but the LA Studio was working on a game called Project Dropship. While this leaked concept art shows a ship, the game was actually a top down shooter. Imagine something similar to Alien Breed Evolution, but with a steampunk meets space western flair.

Project Dropship was in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and Square Enix planned to release it as a digital download for both platforms.

< Update: The screenshots were removed at Square Enix’s request. >

Another canceled game?! NO! That’s like the 6th one you dug up this month!
*Sticks fingers in ears* blahabhghahgh Ican’thearyou… *stomps feet repeatedly*

Alright, I’ll stop being childish. We already discussed this last canceled game post. At least this didn’t look anything incredibly special…

    Wait a second.

Did you say *steampunk + space western*? I-Is that… is that… AN AIRSHIP?!?!?

    • Yeah, sorry :P. I mean if we are the unseen side of games, nothing is more unseen than a canceled game, right?

      • Huh, so this kind of thing happens all the time?

        • Absolutely. Games, in various stages of development, get canceled all of the time. Some are just concepts. Others make it into a playable alpha stage. The thing is the projects are never announced to the public.

Project Dropship was one of those games.

Weeelll if you look at it that way… OK FINE then! Bring on the PAIN, BABY!! YEEHAAWWW!!! XD

        • You.. might want to close your eyes if you visit the site later tonight… it could get real painful XD

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

            *gulp*

    • Damn, why do I get a Cowboy Bebop feeling now…? Actually a game reminiscent to Cowboy Bebop would be damn great!

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I think they made a Cowboy Bebop game, but it got canceled or something (-_-‘). Ideally it would make for such a great game. Investigating in open environments to hunt down the criminals, engaging in foot chases, gun fights, fistfights, aerial dogfights, traveling from planet to planet in the Bebop, getting your bounty missions from Edward, playing as all four members…

Damn, Raioh, now I really want this too…

  • Geez, SE is sure cutting costs huh?

More like Square showing its growing inability to green-light promising project in favor of poor ones that are based on name recognition. Like FFXIII-2

    • Skua

The studio was a small R&D office tasked to research western game styles and development techniques (by hiring a handful of Americans and observing how they work/think/collaborate). Releasing games wasn’t the main purpose; rather, it was planned as a side effect. The internal prototypes could be polished and sold as low cost software, whereas such research projects are normally not intended for public consumption.

With the acquisition of Eidos, that purpose became redundant (the Eidos tech guys are advising the Japanese developers now. They also happen to be industry veterans and not fresh faced hires like the people in their LA office), so it’s little surprise that they’ve suspended those plans.

  • Dang….That game……actually looks pretty cool T.T

Finally Square gets back some senses and cancels those craps from the west.
    A good move.

How do you even know these canceled games are good or not? By 2 screenshots? To me, a lot of undeveloped ideas have potential, and more games can only be a good thing unless they’re taking resources away from even better things.

  • Concept sounds cool, but can’t really tell anything about the execution from those two pix.

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King…Awesome game :D

  • Subsenix

And now can we go back to J-RPGs and PS3 Exclusive stuff because this is where your games really sell?Pretty please

  • katamari

    Well, I guess…

    *puts shades on*

    …this ship got dropped.
