Steambot Chronicles 2 Canceled, Says Famitsu

By Spencer . March 30, 2011 . 1:15am

imageFamitsu’s release calendar brings bad news about Irem’s sequel to Steambot Chronicles. According to the magazine, Steambot Chronicles 2 has been canceled.

Steambot Chronicles 2 first appeared at Tokyo Game Show way back in 2006. Irem hasn’t said much about the PlayStation 3 title since. The last game from the series was Steambot Chronicles: Battle Tournament, which Atlus released in North America in 2009.

This news is not from Irem, however. Their Steambot Chronicles 2 site is still live, but without any new information.

Doki Doki Suikoden, a mystery investigating game with a cosplay element and loose ties to the Water Margin story is still coming out. Irem rescheduled the PSP game for a May release.

That’s too bad, I was looking forward to this game.

  • Yukito

Irem’s future runs on Doki Doki Suikoden now? Lovely. I give them till the end of the month before they close shop. Irem looks like they really are on the verge of it to me. Delays, canceling, pulling off shelves and more.

    • http://honorless.net honorless

I was gonna ask what Irem had left.

      Doki Doki Suikoden.
      PachiParaSlot PSP.
      Game Archives/Virtual Console titles.
      Spelunker-sensei DVDs.
Selling songs on CD and iTunes.
      Playstation Home items.

Their last non-pachislot release* was Sengoku Efuda Yuugi: Hototogisu Tairan, which sold 7407 copies FW according to Media Create.

…And I thought NIS was in a bad situation before Disgaea 4 came out. Unless they’ve just been quietly slaving away at an unannounced project, I don’t know if Irem can spare the dev time/budget for anything but like, PachiPara 18. They don’t even appear to have mobile games to fall back on. Yeow.

      * Not counting the budget re-release of Disaster Report 3, which will no longer be a source of income for Irem going forward anyway.

Two HD games cancelled… is Irem going to be alright?

  • Testsubject909

    Oh for Fuck’s Sake…

What! How come this guy’s swearing is alright, but whenever I do it my comments never get posted?! Stop playing favorites Spencer.

I’m pretty sure it’s because of the possessive “‘s”.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Now this, this is a *true* disaster report you’ve got right here, Spencer. No Irem console games this gen.

In a flash both Irem PS3 games I’ve been looking forward to for a long time are canned. Japanese PS3 games are hard enough to come by as it is…

You were right, I should have closed my eyes. But now I can only facepalm in my sleep.

    Noooooooo

NOOOO! We only got one back in the glory days of the PS2 and its one of my favourite games? Please Irem! Give it some more thought! Its a worthy game. I’ll import it at cost! You know I would! :’(

  • maxchain

I’m disappointed, but I can’t say I’m surprised. This is, what, the third time we’ve even heard anything about the game?

  • https://twitter.com/RaiohV ShinkaRaioh

Wow….now I’m totally sure that something is wrong with Irem, brutally disappointed, at least I hope that doesn’t mean they’re going to get bankrupt soon….Oh, well~

    Worst news ever.

Okay, now I’m definitely thinking someone or several people at Irem had personal tragedies happen due to the quake/tsunami. The Disaster Report games were understandable, but this? Someone must be having trouble going on with life as usual.

    • malek86

Probably more of a money situation. Maybe they were counting on the revenue from DR4 to keep developing SC2. Once that game had to be cancelled, they suddenly couldn’t keep on making this one either, and just chose to write it off as a loss, in order not to have the development weigh too much on the company. I wouldn’t expect much from them for a while.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

might as well consider all future release from irem canceled.

  • nyobzoo

honestly, when they first announced it and after years of no show, I was kind of guessing this is what happened to it

Steambot Chronicles was such a cool game, and now this happens?

Geez what’s wrong with Irem. I’m so disappointed.

  • Croix

Just for reference, what other games does Irem have lined up? Apart from Doki Doki Suikoden as mentioned, of course. I was really interested in both Disaster Report and Steambot Chronicles 2, so it’s really sad to see them go, especially since DR4 was apparently so close to release.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

This is just ridiculous. Irem really should have just put this and DR4 on hold. Because, once they canceled DR4, they must have known there was no going back. I’m utterly disappointed.

    • noxian

the problem is putting either or both of them on hold may be meaningless.

the sad reality is Irem hasn’t released anything remotely resembling a major title in a few years now, and they don’t make Final Fantasy level titles which make so much money they can coast on them for 4-5 years.

hold or not, Irem likely just doesn’t have the war chest to coast until they’re ready to release them.
as people have been saying, it wouldn’t be too shocking if we find out they’re on the verge of folding.
and if they aren’t, they may be scaling back so far that they’re unlikely to release anything major for the rest of this gen, so putting development of games that already started as PS2 games on hiatus would be pointless.

  • PrinceHeir

    that sucks :

    what’s left for Irem now?

  • Redmond Silverfield

If true, this has to be some of the worst gaming news I’ve ever received. ‘Steambot Chronicles’ is one of my favorite games and the sequel has been perhaps my most anticipated title since it was announced.
I truly hope Irem will make every effort to keep this project alive.

  • CleruTesh

    Balls.

  • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

Guess it’s time for R-type package then for Irem to get some monies.
