The Only Gameplay Video Of Project Dropship, Square Enix LA Studio’s Game

By Spencer . March 30, 2011 . 2:31am

Remember the Project Dropship reveal from earlier today? Thanks to a tipster we have more details to share about the unreleased PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 game from Square Enix’s Los Angeles studio.

This art…

… turned into this playable build of Project Dropship.

The older man dressed sort of like a cowboy with a pirate hat (top left) is Winston. Lynn (top right) is the girl with pink hair and goggles. In the game, players would shoot alien creatures with bullets and missiles.

There was also a melee character called with a double-edged blade and a heavy set character called Torque who carried a glowing object on his back. Plans were to make it a shield that doubles as a weapon for Torque to throw.

Project Dropship was in development for quite some time, but Square Enix’s decision to cancel the game was recent. In fact, it happened this month. Originally, Project Dropship was going to be released for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

< Update: The screenshots and videos were removed at Square Enix’s request. >

  • with such original character designs as those i dont understand why it got cancelled …i wanted to be “pink hair with goggles” XD

  • Am I the only one whose mind screamed Tron? So cool.

  • NoElixirs

They need afflatus tantamount to their JP studio. I would honestly like a genuine Final Fantasy entirely devised by their Los Angeles studio out here with the same staples and solidarity as the SQEX JP.

    • Really doubt S-E would open up a western studio to make Japanese games, no doubt they’ll work on stuff that appeals to a western audience now that they’ve set their mind on global domination

Sad to see this cancelled because it looks super awesome, like Assault Heroes but more exciting

      • NoElixirs

A western studio developing a Final Fantasy spin-off with the same fantastical creativity as Square Enix Japan is my main point. With enough research and balancing, it can have the same appeal as plenty of western games.

        • ive said it before and ill say it again : @japanesestudios have a western studio develop your game but still keep japanese staff in control of character design and art direction

          • NoElixirs

I’m under the impression people seem to think the western side lacks afflatus and vision; as if Japanese developers are the only ones capable of devising and executing fantasy/sci-fi games and thinking beyond the mundane elements and traditions teeming in western games today. The west basks in the surfeit of typical tolkien settings and lore; this banality is relentlessly continuing and I find it equally abhorring as much as the next person. We need a much better mixture of different genres and settings.

It’s only a matter of time and placement before we get someone who’s willing to develop high fantasy tantamount to Final Fantasy (this isn’t conclusive).

          • Can you cut it out with the use of words like afflatus? Getting tired of going to dictionary.com

Anywayz, seems silly to be putting the Japanese on the pedestal for this because it’s not like they don’t constantly reuse boring dried out cliches with every other game. They’re not the same cliches that the west uses and they might seem more fresh if you’re not Japanese but the industry as a whole is either creatively bankrupt or creatively held down by the big publishing giants that believe your game has to have either this or that to succeed so to say that the west shouldn’t be able to have their own ideas or to say that they should be babied by the Japanese is pretty insulting.

          • NoElixirs

Pretty much what I’ve been saying regarding the whole ‘pedestal’ part. I think it’s insulting to purport either region can’t ‘use’ a certain idea efficiently or one isn’t capable of being successful as the next.

I wonder how the Final Fantasy spin-off that was canned awhile back (GRIN’s project) would have turned out.

          • vrakanox

I agree man, if the Japanese can do it we can do it. Meanwhile we’re taking the easy way out cranking out stuff like this. At the bare minimum they could be making a FF style iPhone game.

      • Actually, pre-Namco Bandai merger Bandai/Banpresto did, even when Banpresto used to have a Sta. Clara, CA, office.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

… =_= <– That's just me waking up in the morning with my eyes still half shut. No, no, I'm not narrowing my eyes at you, not at all. I mean, it's beautiful footage…

    =_=
