Creepy PSP Game Corpse Party Shows A Player’s Descent Into Madness

5pb is developing a PSP sequel to Corpse Party and Corpse Party: Book of Shadows takes a page from Eternal Darkness. The game has a spirit contamination system that distorts the world when spirits make you lose your sanity. Hallucinations and paranoia kick in when your spirit sinks. If it’s depleted the game ends.

While Corpse Party was a top down adventure/horror game, Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is played from a first person perspective. When an active action icon appears you can freely look around an area to find an object like the key in the screenshots below.

After you find the key in the corner you can move on. The visual style is quite different from the original Corpse Party, the original game had sprites. It didn’t have keys hiding in ceilings either. I suppose this makes Corpse Party: Book of Shadows one of the scariest hidden object games in town.

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows comes out on August 4 in Japan.

  • Umm it looks nice… but i admit i was kinda more attracted to the original idea of corpse party with the sprites’s graphics.

But is coming from 5pb so…

    the manga is awesome

    • There’s a manga o.o? is it based on the first game?

      • Darkrise

        Pretty much.

  • looks creepy :/

GAH!!! PLZ SOMEONE LOCALIZE THIS! This definately has some form of gameplay so that’s something. Right? RIGHT!?

  • I love insanity! :D

  • I am for this game getting localised! The “spirit contamination system” reminds me of the Sanity system in Eternal Darkness. Man, this is shaping up to be an intriguing one!

it’s good that the PSP is region free(hope NGP is the same) ^^

I remember playing on the these games, Corpse Party Blood Party Unrepeated Fear, it was a really good game, of course I’m talking about the PSP port. The sprites really helped to set the mood! :)

I don’t know about this sequel…. from what I understood reading the article, the gameplay seems to be somewhat linear…. Correct me if I’m wrong! :)

    Still I loved these games!

When something even has slightly moe or even… ‘generic’ art, I can’t get creeped out. Even Higurashi to me didn’t feel creepy or seriously violent because of that. Or maybe Berserk and Vinland Saga have altered my perspective.

    It does sound interesting though.

I still need to get my hands on the first PSP games. Loved what I played of the PC game and the manga.
