Atlus Allures Us With The First English Screenshots Of Catherine

If you’ve been following Catherine closely you may recall the scene where a frightened Vincent approaches a sheep sitting on a throne or Vincent and Katherine’s chat over coffee. Now you can see a snapshot from those events in English. Atlus just sent us a batch of localized screenshots of Catherine.

    So, if the screenshots have subtitles, does that mean for sure we’ll have a Japanese voice option?

      Pretty sure the Japanese version had subtitles too. It’s a pretty standard option, it doesn’t really mean anything one way or the other.

      No. The japanese version has subtitles as well. As do 99% of games released.

      The presence of manual lip-synching, however, confirms the opposite.

        It doesn’t “confirm” that at all. It makes it less likely, but it doesn’t automatically exclude the possibility. The alternative would have obviously been for them to not lip-sync the models and I can guarantee that wouldn’t have stopped them from including an English voice track.

        • I’m saying that the presence of manual lip-synching almost puts the chances for Dual Audio at zero. They are NOT going through the effort of bothering with two separate lip-synching model sets and making that work.

          Catherine will be English only, mark my words.

            Or they just won’t bother lip-syncing the Japanese track. Speculation is all fine and dandy, but until Atlus tell us what they’re doing nothing is confirmed.

            There are reasons why they might remove it. Licensing, development effort, lack of space on the 360 DVD, Atlus’ track record of dropping Japanese tracks. But yes, I’m inclined to think that if they can keep it without too much trouble then they will. I wouldn’t want to bet money on it either way personally.

          • My stance is more “reasonable assumption” than “speculation”. But sure, whatever, I’m speculating.

            I’m also “speculating” that a meteor wont hit me square in the face within the following 5 minutes. Now I can’t be sure of this, but I’m sure as hell not going to wear a helmet.

            It would be “reasonable assumption” if no other games were released with dual audio. I’m inclined to think it won’t be there purely because this is Atlus USA. Honestly though I’m about as tired of talking about DA as you are.

            Atlus is actually one of the few companies will bother including the Japanese track on occasion. There’s plenty of occasions they don’t (though more often than not it’s for expected reasons like space) but I personally wouldn’t consider their track record as a reason to rule it out.

            Though honestly I don’t really care. I was almost certainly going to use the English track regardless.

            Hey I tried it man, once you get Gold on the entire stage, then you would be able the skip it. But before the super-easy patch getting gold wasn’t exactly an easy thing to do. I’ve gotten all 8 endings on both ver now, that’s pretty much the best I could do.. wonder how many people actually beat 64 stages of Rapunzel.. Never tried to play co-op w/ a 2nd player though..

            Looking forward to the Eng. dub. I agree w/ you, this game is most likely 99.9999% dub only (scratch that, I’m willing to bet 100%).. hoping for otherwise is like hoping the 3DS would be region-free…

          • Cool! I’m holding out for the US version before I tackle some more endings. Got True,Normal lover, and True Adulter. I’m saving the rest for a different VA cast.

            But yeah, that difficulty patch makes the game a cakewalk

            I have…….its kind of boring. Collisuem can be fun with a friend, cuz you can act like a dick towards each other, but Babel isn’t exciting at all and lasts way too long to be fun with two people.

            Yea, Babel towers are just way too long.. it’s like a survivor mode kind of.. a 2nd player would most likely get in the way, so I imagine sabotaging each other is fun..

            You should get Normal Adulter one, I think you just pick a different answer at the end plus you could skip the last two stages..

            Other than the 3D and anime cutscenes, there’s a lot of NPCs in both the bar and nightmare sequences to talk to (people or sheeps) it actually feels like an RPG.. all fully voiced.. depending on how you talk to them, the results/endings are different too (also trophies/achievement).. so actually the game has a lot of dialogue, and the seiyuu cast did a heck of a good job.. otherwise Atlus wouldn’t bother w/ custom Eng. lip sync, because they’re so many lines..

          But who are we kidding though, chances are this really wouldn’t have dual audio.. It’s like Trauma Team.. if you want to listen to Jpn dub, you would need to get “Hospital”. And that’s a game that doesn’t even have issues w/ lip synch and such, and dual audio would certainly fit on a DVD, look at Fragile or other games.. And now they’re doing a separate lip sync for English.. It just means they want to make the English ver as perfect as possible, rather than including two versions of the game in one.

        You could try playing this game again later once you get to that age lol..

        I love these games w/ some much realistic themes and references now.. it’s fantasy but also grounded in reality… Catherine and Steins;Gate both made a big impression on me..

        But yea, I think one’s age has a lot to do w/ relating to chars.. like when I was a kid I liked watching robot shows w/ kid pilots.. or YuYu Hakusho, I was a teen and the main chars battling evil were teens.. and now I’m older the real life and relationship problems really speak to me since I’ve been thru a lot of stuffs… it’s a bit harder to care or get into a game about a 14 yr old char saving the world anymore..

        It’s like the anime Maison Ikkoku, I don’t think I appreciate the series as much when I watched it younger.. it’s more about real adults and slice of life.. I liked Ranma 1/2 when I was a teenager but not so much now..

          I should really watch Maison Ikkoku or maybe go grab the manga if I can. Always wanted to get into that one it just slipped my mind. lol I hear you. Now that I’m older I really want to see more older heroes. I’ve started to like Seinen more not b/c of the violence making it more “Mature” but generally b/c I feel I can relate to it more and find it mature in it’s tone and setting (though not all seinen of course).

          But that being said I love the cutesy cliche child saves the world. I think it resonates with me even more now that I’m older. Like Blue Dragon. I love the games and shows. It’s got it’s charm. I CAN not take it serious any more now that I’m older but I appreciate it on a different level. I find it charming and just something that’s plain fun and doesn’t need to be taken seriously. lol I’m not sure how to explain it but I hope you know what I mean.

          Stories more ground in real life appeal to me more too. Now that I’m older slice of life has become one of my fav genres. Especially the ground in reality ones that don’t center on JUST comedy. Also show that satire or poke fun at the subculture. When I think of recent show that have stuck to me and I have fallen in love with they are shows like Welcome to the NHK and Tatami Galaxy. Both shows hold a special place in my heart and are very personal fav’s of mine. I felt strong emotional attachment to them.

            Sure, sometimes it’s good to watch the more simple and relaxing stuff too, I liked the Blue Dragon game, but definitely not the show or the anime, I think they were pretty bad, haven’t played the spinoffs.. I still prefer the chars to be at least in their 20’s :)

            I understand what you mean by seinen (or even otona adult manga) vs. shounen, it’s not necessarily the violence, but shounen is targeted at young boys after all, that’s why a lot of older Jpn fans would say “graduated” from that stuff.. when you were younger, you see yourself as that hero and thinks he’s really cool since he’s your age and doing so much cool stuffs and wish to be him.. but sometimes seinen, or otona manga, are too depressing lol…

            You should check out the Maison Ikkoku anime too if you have a chance (even though it was 96 eps long), the Viz DVDs are almost extinct now, they really should re-release on blu-ray one day.. a total Takahashi Rumiko classic, had some humors but not juvenile hijinks.

            You know what’s crazy though.. I was reading/watching Kenshin when I was in high school/college, back then Kenshin, being at 28, was a pretty old character to me (though he doesn’t look it), now I’m older than Kenshin and most anime chars lol.. of course Kenshin has been thru much more hardships than me..

            The manga is kinda easy to get from searching on Amazon. Some volumes are high but I’ve been through way worse. I pretty much gave up trying to own Saint Seiya. Not at those prices. It’s not happening :( I think there have been a good number of re-prints of MK too so mixing and matching the 2nd edition prints with the first, and the etc. shouldn’t kill me. I hope there were Omnibus releases too though. That would help a lot.

            But the anime ;__; Might not happen. Rumiko Takahashi Re-release on Blu-Ray is always welcomed. Maybe make an Inuyash Kai too. lol That would be really cool.

            lol I feel you Aoshi Its brings tears to me to think that Roronoa Zoro is younger than me and so [email protected] already.;__; Darn I’ve been shown up by him. He’s only a year younger than me but I already feel inefficient compared to him. ;__; lol Oh too think when I started to watch One Piece he was like three or four years older than me. I thought he was so old and mature. Now I’m older than him. It’s definitely a weird feeling

            That just means our real lives are boring, that’s why anime/manga/games are so interesting :) It’s a pity the whole Saint Seiya series wasn’t released on US DVDs.. it was part of my life and would forever be part of my life.. if you think we haven’t done much, the saints went thru hellish training as kids to obtain their cloths :) I had always admired them.. now that I think about it that’s like child abuse lol.. “Burn my Cosmos, Burn!!”

            @Aoshi Saint Seiya Yes It’s a sad story. We got all the manga but the anime wasn’t so lucky. It’s really just a victim of it’s time when I think about it. They did everything right with the anime. It wasn’t really a bad dub at all. We got the edited TV Version on a pretty popular time slot(though if it was on Tomani back in the day I can’t help but think it would of been better). I remember watching this and like an hour later Kenshin would come on. :) And we got unedited DVD release with all the original music and such. The manga release came out to follow up the show. It had all the stuff recent animes like Naruto or Bleach has now but it just didn’t work in the US. I blame it’s time. It was just unlucky.
            JPN Openings were so much better though. I ran is a great song but it wasn’t the Flock of Seagulls version ;__; Yes I will hold that against the US release lol

            Yea, they really brought it to the US rather late as Knights of the Zodiac.. by that time Saint Seiya was practically a legend to the rest of the world arldy like Asia, South America and Europe.. the way I see it, it’s kind of like soccer it just never caught on..

            Pegasus Fantasy and Soldier Dream were awesome songs.. 80s anime theme songs actually had uplifting lyrics that are related to the shows.. rather than just promoting new artists like the anime songs nowadays (that’s why OPs and EDs switch so frequently)

            @Aoshi 80’s Anime Openings <3 Past my time but I love them quite a bit. Some of the best Openings ever. Panzar World Galient, Fist of the North Star, Dragon Quest Dai's Great Adv (Well 1991 but close enough lol) Great Opening songs. And Mio Too. Love her singing. 80's had awesome Openings. I actually like the Engrish Saint Seiya Opening too. Kinda hard to understand at parts but it has quite a bit of emotion in it. ^_^

            lol.. what the heck was that, can’t be the official French/English OP for Saint seiya right, sounds fan-made..

            Oh yea, I loved the Dragon Quest Dai’s Great Adv. anime, the anime was actually like 1/3 of the manga..I loved Inada Kouji’s art style, a little similar to Toriyama’s..
            how I wish we would get a DQ game based on that anime.. it was the best rearrangement of the Sugiyama soundtrack. Again, the old theme songs were uplifting in spirits, fitting w/ the shows’ theme..

            @Aoshi lol I have no idea where it came from but I like that Saint Seiya Opening. ^_^ Lot’s of emotion in it. Very fun to listen to I think. :P I love the Dragon Quest Dai’s Great Adev manga. One of my fav’s. :) And you got the subtitled Opening just for me :) Oh thank you. But it doesn’t have the awesome sound effects and calling out the names. That’s the best. XD I love animes that have cheesy sound-effects in the openings. It’s not done too much anymore.             The same duo also went on to make BEET. Love that manga too. Recent but the Opening is pretty good and has some emotion to convey. I liked BEET. I think I like Dai better and am bummed b/c it looks like BEET will never get an ending but BEET is also fun and worth getting into.

            Mind blowing, I didn’t know there’s a version w/ all the added sound effects, apparently it’s from the DQ movie, plain awesome :).

            Yea, I did read and watch a little BEET but just parts of it.. Inada’s drawing was still really good, but I prefer his older softer style in DQ Dai..

            @Aoshi Oh the things you can find on Youtube when you’re bored. ^_^ Anyways. lol In BEET he just modernized was all. Lot’s of mangaka change over time. It’s not 1/2 bad in BEET but there is a certain charm to his “Old School” art I agree. :) I kinda like 90’s looking chara’s myself. Some people think they look weird but I think hey at least everyone’s not a bishounen or moe!!! lol I went there.

            I remember Hoshin Engi getting flak from some people on a board before for it’s 90’s style art. While not the best in the art department it wasn’t bad and is one of my fav’s manga. It bummed me to hear it be criticize for that.

            I always do love the occasional mangka who can avoid modernizing like Adachi and Rumiko. Their charm would of been lost had they and I’m glad they were able to keep their style down. Then again they are kind of legends so I guess they were just able to get away with not modernizing. Not all mangka are so lucky.

            Yea, Adachi Mitsuru, Takahashi Rumiko, Kuramada Masami had stayed pretty true to the last generation of art styles.. you could still see the gradual difference over the decades though.. I thought Takahashi’s drawing was the best in Ranma (when the edges were softer right now it’s too hard).. and I liked Adachi the best in Touch, Slow Step, or H2.. also Toriyama was the best perhaps until the end of Cell.. Watsuki’s art style has changed a lot thruout his career.. it’s actually inevitable having drawn so many years.. I think their art styles mostly peaked in the middle of their career when they were younger and most enthusiastic.

            I didn’t like the Houshin Engi anime that much though, even though the OP Will sung by Yonekura Chihiro was one of my fav. songs.. Fujisaki Ryu’s manga was much much better (and his art style has changed so much, getting more surreal by the day, like in Shiki now..) if the anime was given a bigger budget and stayed more faithful to the manga, it could’ve been Naruto-big back then.. instead it was a rather crappy 26-ep w/ a totally different ending.. the epic paopei battles were animated pretty shabbily I though… Did the anime even have Chou Koumei? I forgot.. I know it omitted a lot of stuffs..

            @Aoshi YES!!!! So much more could of been done for Hoshin Engi. The anime missed so much. I was excited when I heard Shmei TV wanted to remake it and give us a manga accurate show that would cover the entirety of it but nothing has come of that and I have pretty much given up. ;__;

            Ryu Fujisaki has pretty much gone real far into sci-fi last I checked. I think it’s fitting. By the time you finish Hoshin Engi you realize just how Sci-Fi that whole thing was and how much he most of loved Sci-Fi. Waq-Waq was cool. Too short but good none the less.

            Oddly enough I did not like Shiki. Only watch like 4 or 5 episodes of the anime and hated it. I couldn’t get behind the chara’s at all. Everyone was a @sshole or way too naive. The only chara I felt like caring about was the Doctor guy. He was the only strong nice and cool chara. Purple Hair kid was a huge jerk. >_< Could not get behind him. Still liked the Opening song for the anime though. I gotta admit that was a cool Opening.

            Yea, I was excited when I heard the studio was gauging fans’ interest for a manga-faithful adaptation for Houshin Engi, I doubt much would come out of it, like Jinchuu for Kenshin (right now they’re just re-airing selected eps of the TV series and re-releasing the OVAs/movie onblu-ray), just wishful thinking..

            Fujisaki has gone totally sci-fi w/ Joka at the end (which I wasn’t too crazy about) and all of his subsequent manga.. he actually started out w/ many sci-fi short stories before Houshin Engi..

            Shiki was based on a horror novel though.. not sure if the chars are supposed to be even likable.. and Fujisaki is just giving a weird spin to it w/ his crazy drawing style.. I’ve only read the first two volumes and bought the rest (think it’s vol 10 now?) but all on backlog.. I watched 2 eps the anime seems unique.. but I’ll need to finish reading the manga one day before watching the anime. it’s just that his art has gotten so far out though..

            @Aoshi I really Like the Signpost of History part at the end myself but I think the manga peaked at the Arc where the Seneins were fighting the Yokai’s. That was the best part of the manga for me. Great fights and We got to see Taikobou in serious mode. Shupu too. They kicked so much butt. ^_^ Also Otenkun and Taikobou’s relationship and the awesome twist of Fukki. That was cool too. Good Manga. I love the main chara who is a lazy Genius and that’s Taikobou all the way. :)

    just why atlus didn’t confirm or deny the japanese voice option already, are they still study/considering dual voice option???

    it just make me believe that i can still hear miyukichi voice in western release even after that lip-synch confirmation:P

    • Maybe no media has even asked them about it. I cant seem them just sending an “Atlus faithful” stating “there is no dual voice option.”

    • Under the “dual audio please” thread on the Atlus forums states that it’s English dubbed only.

  • Oh sh*t. Seeing the translation, it’s sh*t(i played the original and I know japanese to say that). That’s why I hate localizations sometimes. Besides, I do prefer “Golden Theater” to “Golden Playhouse”. Nope, this “localization” doesn’t even deserve to be released. I do pray it wouldn’t be.
    I’ll better play everything in japanese, just not to see such sh*t.

    • Ah, yes, deep, important character-defining lines like “what’s wrong you’re acting weird” are the perfect way to judge a work’s writing quality.

      If you had alrdy played and understood the Jpn ver, then why do you even bother w/ the US version?

      Why is “Playhouse” (as in Shakespeare) a bad translation? Sounds rather classy to me. The Jpn word was ゴールデン遊戯劇場 (Golden Yuugi Gekijou).. if you looked at the manga/anime Fushigi Yuugi (ふしぎ遊戯) ‘s Eng. title, it was translated by Viz as “Wondrous Play” as well.

      What were the respective Jpn lines for those several sentences? Could you compare them to say why the translation is bad?

      A lot of times Jpn games use a lot of “Engrish” that doesn’t make much sense or sound natural, that’s why localization is needed to make things flow better.. for example, Shinji is called “Third Children” in EVA instead of “Third Child”,and that’s just one of the many examples..

      But sure you’re free to import the Jpn ver and just play that.. if you can’t appreciate quality localization handled w/ care. of course everyone knows you’re just trolling…

      I can be a real Nazi about localization, but “Theater” vs. “Playhouse?” Really? I’m absolutely the kind of player who’ll say “God I hate this localization,” but please, cite examples of bad translation, or Americanization so I can hate on it with you, instead of lone example that’s largely word preference.

    • idk about you, but “Playhouse” sounds more flirty than “Theater”.

  • Why does Japan hate manly characters so much? We always get the awkward loser or the indecisive moron – never the manly man who’s confident and in control.

    • I think more can relate to this main character than say a “ttgl-Kamina” like character (confident and in control).

    • Because in the context of this narrative, a confident, manly man is utterly pointless and goes against the themes the game is trying to convey.

      Vincent is supposed to be a direct parallel to a societal issue Japan is facing right now.
