Square Enix To Distribute Dead Island In The U.S.

By Ishaan . May 3, 2011 . 4:01pm

Remember Dead Island? Take a moment to refresh your memory with this trailer, in case you forgot — or haven’t heard of — Deep Silver’s zombie survival-action game, which sees a small group of people stuck on an island with a zombie outbreak.

Square Enix announced today that they’ll be handling distribution for Dead Island in the U.S., and it sounds like they’ll be responsible for marketing it, too. Interestingly, Deep Silver are owned by Koch Media, who distribute Square Enix and Eidos games in certain European territories like Germany.

Dead Island is being prepared for an Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 release this year.

It would be interesting, but I was under the impression that it is actually a game of goofy proportions than being a survival horror, which would have been more exciting.

  • Revorse

Doesn’t seem very Square…but I did like that trailer

    • city_debut

      It isn’t a Square game.

      • Revorse

I know this. What I meant is that it doesn’t feel like anything Square would have their name on.

        • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

I guess they’re trying to be more western.

    • godmars

Just hope that they don’t do a Square and turn it into an exclusive. Prioritize which platform gets it first.

    looks cool

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Now this is something I don’t mind Square doing. Financing the littler guys so their work reaches as many people as possible.

  • SetzerGabbiani

    Ehhhh……

    • AnimusVox

      I’m just sick of zombies….

I’m sick and tired of FPS, hogging the American gaming scene.

        • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Come on, if we take the best 10 selling games of last year, FPS genre does not “hog” the gaming scene.

Call of Duty: Black Ops – PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, DS
          Madden NFL 11 – PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, PS2
          Halo: Reach – Xbox 360
New Super Mario Bros. Wii – Wii
          Red Dead Redemption – PS3, Xbox 360
          Wii Fit Plus – Wii
          Just Dance 2 – Wii
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – PS3, Xbox 360, PC
          Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood – PS3, Xbox 360
          NBA 2K11 – PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, PS2

Why do you hate FPS so much?!

          • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

I’ve seen more FPS ads on TV alone than any other genres, to the point of over-saturation; seriously, Black Ops and Crysis 2 in the same show broadcast? That’s overkill. It doesn’t help that FPS is being used as propaganda tool; America’s Army, Homefront (which deals with a theorized US VS North Korea world war), to name a few.

          • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

You name three titles that had huge budgets, but dont mention other games that had massive advertisements, FF XIII during sports games, tons of EA Sports games, even Nintendo games, Pokemon even. I think you are only just remember the ones to prove your point, just because other companies are not willing to spend massive money on tvs ads doesnt mean there is over saturation of FPS’s compared to other genres.

“It doesn’t help that FPS is being used as propaganda tool”

Oh man, thanks for a good laugh.

I’ve never been sick of zombies. <3 Although, I find that zombie games have been pretty similar so far. Why developers haven't decided to for a more survival based design, I have no idea.

Resident Evil doesn't quite capture the essence of "Night of the Living Dead" or "Dawn of the Dead". It's not really survivor, because they're armed soldiers. Sure, you have to survive with limited ammo, but you can get bitten a million times and nom on some herbs to live.

We need something like High School of the Dead. With social problems, distraction tactics and some everyday characters. It's gotta feel like the apocalypse.

… but in a fun game! I really hope to see more diverse zombie games.

This should be nice. :3 What are the specs?

  • Hexen

you can Omnislash the zombies now. Yey!

  • TrevHead

Square instead of making new IPs I would much rather they made use of some of their old IPs especially the best EIDOS IPs.

They have resurrected Dungeon Siege and continue to make Tomb Raider but I wont be satisfied until I see a new Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver game. As I and many others would love to see a true closure to the epic story and the gameplay is on par or better then Tomb Raider especially the first game.

  • Yukito

I remember the days I had games with Square’s name on them. Good times.

    • Zero_Destiny

      I remember days when I had games with Enix’s name on them. Better times. What are you trying to get at? I hope you’re not accusing Enix of bringing Square down because if you are I’m very upset by that statement. ;__;

      • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

Naw. I don’t think so. But I will say both companies had different types of games, and once they got together, it wasn’t quite the same.

You have to admit, Enix games weren’t what they once were either.

        • https://twitter.com/RaiohV ShinkaRaioh

Hmm, I don’t understand wasn’t Enix “just” a publisher? In that case none of their games lost any glance as they are still developed by other companies, Dragon Quest for example is still as great as ever.

          • Zero_Destiny

I think Just is saying that in recent years both companies games haven’t been up to stuff. I think this is partly true but I don’t think it has been too bad and has anything to do with the merger and more to do with recent trends in gaming not sitting well with me and the recent politics of game developing. These things have effected other Japanese Companies as well.

I think both parts are good though. Anyways I still think Enix is the stronger part of the relationship as it’s games have been more true to their routes and have done a pretty good job at satisfying their core audience. Square still has that stigma about how it’s shafting their older fans and are modernizing too much.

Too be honest it’s just tricky for Square. They are the company that got were it is because they were the first to modernize and push tech to it’s limits. But now doing stuff like that is very expensive. Likewise now that they have an older fanbase they are being chastised for modernizing and alienating them. It’s tricky.

To me Square has fallen off and I want more games in the vein of how they use to be. But all their newer stuff has yet to be awful to me. Enix too has modernize and made changes to their properties but these changes are much smaller. I think that’s the diff between both parts.

          • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

Pretty much right. xD I meant they both aren’t doing the same things that they’ve used to do. Since they’ve merged, Square Enix has been trying to adapt to a new gaming trend.

            Basically, what Zero said.

      • Yukito

Nah, to be honest, I believe Enix > Square. Dragon Warrior 7 is still my favorite RPG of all time.

        • Zero_Destiny

          Oh I see misunderstood. ^_^

  • Suicunesol

That trailer was actually pretty intense…

…aside from the unavoidable pitfall of the uncanny valley which, interestingly enough, makes it appropriately creepier due to it being a horror game.

  • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

YESSSS. I’ve been waiting for more news on this game.

Love them zombies. (Except in the early Resident Evils, where they’re scary and ammo was actually hard to find.)

  • PrinceHeir

2:49 reminds me of Ada from RE4 or I-No from Guilty Gear :)

    looks like Left 4 dead?

When I saw Square Enix I thought this would be a RPG zombie hack but then I remember they have Eidos. Hopefully they do something different than the other Zombie games out there.

  • Wiccan1109

Been a long time since ive seen something thats equally as beautiful as it is disgusting. I dont do zombie games but i always love the plot idea for the zombie apocalypse. Theres something very captivating about being in such a helpless situation and it always seems to bring out the very best or worst in the humanity of the characters. It was refreshing to see a trailer that isnt just an unphased bad ass blowing sh*t up with guns, because thats how he rolls and the zombies were merely convenient. :P

  • Kai2591

    Wow…Nice trailer.
Feels like an episode of ‘Lost’ haha.
    Anyway, seems interesting.
