Jaleco’s Spirit Lives On Nintendo 3DS Through Two Virtual Console Releases

By Spencer . May 7, 2011 . 1:05pm

image When the Nintendo 3DS eShop launches, we’ll be able to download Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version, Excitebike with 3D visuals, and some Virtual Console games. Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, and TurboGrafx-16 games are confirmed for the service.

And it looks like Jaleco is getting a jump on the competition. Two of their spinach green Game Boy titles have been rerated as Nintendo 3DS games by the ESRB. Fortified Zone, an overhead Contra-ish game, and Amazing Spirit, a port of a quirky arcade platformer/action game.

In Japan and more recently with the iOS, Avenging Spirit is promoted with a cutesy ghost character. That’s actually you. The main character was killed by gangsters in the beginning of the game and now has the ability to possess others, which he uses to save his girlfriend.

Jaleco released Avenging Spirit in North America, but decided the ghost wasn’t the right way to market the game. So, they put a mobster firing a tommy gun on the cover of the Game Boy game.

No word on when these games will be released, but I’m inclined to believe sooner rather than later since both titles are already ESRB approved.

But really? When hasn’t there been a time when putting a mobster with a tommy gun on the cover hasn’t been appropriated omo?

    • Hahaha. Yeah, especially this was right around the time when the Dick Tracy film came out too. It must have helped Jaleco sell more copies.

Am I the only one who is wondering why Nintendo hasn’t announced an eShop date or what games will be available?

I honestly thought that Nintendo was trying to step up their downloadable games approach after disappointing VC sales. I hope this is not a bad omen for things to come…

Maybe many people will think that I’m crazy, but after I saw the video I beginning to think that probably the mobster is kinda more appropriate for avenging spirit. I mean the concept is actually more darker than it appears, yeah I know that the characters looks cute, but the happy tree friends looks cute too and are not exactly a child’s cartoon.

However after seeing the video I really wanted to play it, looks really fun.

  • I love AVENGING SPIRIT. It was the bomb.
