Disgaea Is Coming To Android Next Week And It’s Free

By Spencer . May 10, 2011 . 1:32pm

If portable Disgaea games for the Nintendo DS and PSP weren’t enough, Nippon Ichi plans on prinny bombing productivity with a mobile phone version of Disgaea. This is not another port of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Disgaea for Android is based on the Item World and the app generates random maps to fight in.

Disgaea for Android will be available on May 16 and its a free download. Extra characters and items will be sold as paid downloadable content.

  • Oh god yes.
And now we watch as my productivity falls to zero. :D

2 major things I like about this announcement:
1.) Silly little item world only app. To be honest, Item World grinding was some of my favorite times in Disgaea, so I think this is pretty awesome.
2.) Most importantly, it’s on -Android-. It’s about damn time Android sees some gaming love, after everything only coming out on iOS.
*Not bitter about Robot Unicorn Attack. Nope. Not at all. Not in the least. *sniff* *

    • Selaphiel

Didn’t they recently release an Android ver. of Robot Unicorn Attack?

      • *Goes to check*

WHY YES THEY DID. Sir or miss, you have just made my week. I cannot thank you enough. =O

Also Adult Swim games, effing took you long enough! But thank you nonetheless. <3

        Edit —
Interestingly, it's apparently rather unstable / prone to crashing. Going to buy it regardless though, as I want to support more of their stuff on Android as well as iOS. (Plus I'd imagine they'll patch it soon enough)

        • Sign in with Feint, it’ll stop crashing

          • Strangely enough it hasn’t crashed yet for me, even without signing into Feint. I’ll probably do so the first time I run into such a crash.

  • @NISAmerica If a full on port of any #Disgaea game lands to the #Android, I’ll buy it in a heartbeat.

  • Wow! Definitely will be the first thing I get on the android os if I had one.

  • Code

rar, well played NIS owo; Although I think Disgaea’s best aspect was it’s story and characters so this does kind of miss the bets parts; but I don’t think anyone would knock free item world owo; But always a chance it’ll bring people to the original/PSP versions for there brilliant story owo; Sadly though myself I’ll miss out on this omo don’t have an Android, or any phone for that matter omo; rar, I communicate by throwing rocks T_T’

    • Tommy Lee

You don’t have any smart mobile phone, or you don’t have any mobile phone?

      • Code

I don’t have a phone period opo; Even an old-timey wallphone, lol opo’

  • pentarou

Not gonna get my hopes up just yet, been seeing a lot of “This item cannot be installed in your device’s country” lately :(

    • Kirbysuperstar2

Beauty is, somebody will put the APK up and you can load it that way.

  • nyoron

Interesting. Doubt I’ll buy any of the DLC but can’t really argue with free.

  • Well this helps gaming on a budget if I owned an Android.

The only character I would buy is (you guessed it) Pleinair so I would make a terrible customer for a game that makes a profit off of DLC. XD

  • Sounds too lite, give me Disgaea 3 and we’ll talk

    • It’s also, you know, Free. It’s not like they’re making you pay for it.

  • IceRomancer

The first time I wished my iPhone was an android :(

  • ffboi7

too bad I don’t have an Android….. worst yet I have no phone!

  • lostinblue

They finally did what I was saying they should do for years. item world for cell phone platforms.

    Why is it free though?

    • “Freemium” – you can pay to unlock characters/get items.

      • lostinblue

I realize that, but I’d be really content to drop like 5 dollars or something like that for the entry fee with full content. From the moment it’s “free” to an extent and considering it’s casual machines we’re talking about I bet I won’t be compelled to pay.

  • Locklear93

Holy CRAP, localize, please. This would be the first game I’d bother putting on my phone.

  • Pichi

I’m surprised its for free. Then again, free advertising for the series. This is what I would like to see. Maybe in the future, the stuff you get in the item world would give you stuff in another Disgaea game. Or plan something like that in the future.

    • Surprised? I thought the free model with paid add-on content is the profitable model vs charging for entry.

      • Pichi

Didn’t read between the lines as I didn’t see the paid stuff. Have to agree with you there.

  • CleruTesh

Meh. I was just having a conversation earlier about how much the “freemium” model sucks. Seems to me the idea is generally that, in order to get the full experience from a game, you need to spend WAY more money than any game costs to buy. Even in non-free games, sometimes the whole concept of DLC seems to be a racket. That’s my two cents anyway.

  • Only in Japanese, though, yes? :/

  • Exand

And I’m off to get a smart phone…

  • And Square Enix still can’t FFT to the frickin’ iPhone…

  • This is a pretty neat idea. Good way to get introduced into the mechanics of the Disgaea games– just put in some Geo Symbol combos and we’ll be gold.

Hope this means more Disgaea games on the smartphones.

  • neo_firenze

Sweet, a game to play on my Evo 4G. LOVE the phone, best phone I’ve ever owned and I’m plenty happy not having an iPhone and the awful and pricey service that it requires. But the Android apps I enjoy are decidedly non-game.

This one looks like it will be a good time killer when I only have my phone on me though.

  • YsyDoesIt

I was on board until the whole “extras will be paid content”. I miss paying a flat fee and knowing what I’d be getting. Nickel and Dime models aren’t my friend.

  • Why did i get a windows phone! T_T. good thing other people in my household have androids.

    • I wouldn’t ever get a Windows Phone ’cause I asked a Microsoft rep if I could play Ikaruga (WP7 can play Live Arcade games) but he said only XNA-developed games could be played on it. So, WP7 = not worth it.

    • Go to xda-developers and see if you can install a ROM on it anyway.

  • This is better than having Angry Birds to play!

  • VisualData

finally, Android gets something for a change.
Now if only they can strike some deals with CAVE

  • hush404

Holy COW! That is AWESOME news!!!! <3 my Android phone and I'm always wishing it had better games :P

  • awesome d00d imma get this day one
